Jennifer Strunge makes one-of-a-kind Cotton Monsters from cleaned, upcycled clothing, turning familiar fabrics into soft sculptures with distinct colors, textures and personalities. The Baltimore fiber artist describes them as works of art for adult collectors—not toys for children.
Who is Jennifer Strunge?
Strunge is a Baltimore-based fiber artist and a 2004 graduate of Maryland Institute College of Art, where she earned a BFA in fiber. Her wider practice includes quilts, wearable work, puppets and installations, with the Cotton Monsters forming one part of a career in textile-based art. Baker Artist Portfolio

Her official biography traces the project to a 2004 thesis that brought together monster puppets, wearables, soft sculptures and quilts. The artist says she has made Cotton Monsters since 2006. Cotton Monster official biography and FAQ
What are Cotton Monsters made from?
The sculptures are made mostly from cleaned, upcycled clothing. Strunge’s examples include shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants and pajamas; a process description also mentions sheets and fabric remnants. The starting material is ordinary clothing, but its color, texture and feel help shape the finished sculpture. Cotton Monster official FAQ Make: feature

Reusing garments is a defining material choice, but the available sources do not quantify waste diverted or environmental benefits. It is more accurate to describe the work as made with upcycled textiles than to attach an unsupported sustainability figure to it.
How does Strunge make them?
The process is intuitive and one-at-a-time rather than based on a repeated pattern. Strunge deconstructs garments and sews their pieces into new forms, selecting materials as she works. In a 2014 Make: feature, Andrew Salomone reproduced Strunge’s description of using a Bernina sewing machine, new polyester fiberfill and hand stitching. In a 2007 interview, Strunge described choosing colors and materials as she worked, allowing the available garments to influence each monster’s form. Because each sculpture is assembled individually from different fabrics, variations in shape, color and surface are part of the method, not deviations from a standard design. Are Cotton Monsters toys?
No: Strunge’s official FAQ presents them as one-of-a-kind handmade soft art for adult collectors and says they are not intended for children under 15. Their soft, approachable appearance should not be mistaken for a claim that they are children’s toys. Cotton Monster official FAQ

Where the monsters fit in her wider practice
The Cotton Monsters connect the tactility of clothing and quilting with the volume and presence of sculpture. They sit alongside Strunge’s wearable pieces, puppets and large-scale installations rather than defining her practice on their own.
