World’s Best Paper Airplane: Best for Distance, Airtime, or Easy Flying?

The best paper airplane depends on your goal. Guinness’s current distance benchmark is distinct from the airtime record, while Collins’s Suzanne remains a famous, instruction-ready design.

There isn’t one paper airplane that is best at everything. For a documented distance benchmark, the current Guinness World Records mark is 98.43 m (322 ft 11 in), achieved by Liu Liwen and teammates in Shanghai on 28 December 2025. For a famous design with published folding instructions, try John M. Collins’s Suzanne—but it is a historic record-setting design, not the current distance record. The best choice depends on whether you want distance, airtime, or a forgiving plane for everyday throws.

Which paper airplane is best for your goal?

Choose by what you want the plane to do. A fast, distance-oriented aircraft is a different design goal from a plane that floats slowly for airtime. Beginner friendliness and everyday reliability are separate considerations, too.

Your goal What to look for What the records can tell you
Fly far Repeatable distance, a stable release, and precise, symmetrical folds Guinness’s distance record is a benchmark under specific indoor rules, not proof that the design is the best casual flyer.
Stay aloft Seconds in the air and a consistent glide Duration is a separate record category; it should not be treated as the same contest as distance.
Easy to fold and fly Clear folds, symmetry, and the ability to correct flight The available record information does not rank designs by beginner difficulty.
Everyday fun Paper you can readily find, repeatable results, and tolerance for imperfect throws A specialized record aircraft may be less forgiving in an ordinary room or casual throw.

What is the current paper-airplane distance record?

Guinness World Records lists a flight of 98.43 m (322 ft 11 in), achieved by Liu Liwen with Tang Shuai, Yang Shian, Huang Yizhou, Qiao Yuchen, and Wang Chenghao in Shanghai on 28 December 2025. Guinness’s record listing was accessed on 7 October 2026; the organization cautions that records can change and publication may lag. See the Guinness history and explanation of paper-plane distance and its current farthest-flight record page.

The record has specific conditions

This is not a casual room-distance claim. Guinness’s farthest-flight rules specify an indoor, closed-air environment and one commercially available A4 sheet weighing under 100 gsm. A thrower may take a run-up of up to 3.04 m, but must launch from a static position behind the designated line. Anyone attempting a record should consult the current rules directly; a demonstration or ordinary flight does not establish that an attempt meets them.

Distance and airtime are different records

Guinness lists a separate duration record: 31.2 seconds, achieved in Kunshan, China, on 11 February 2026. That measures time aloft, not distance. The two records do not show that one plane—or one fold—wins both categories. See the Guinness longest-duration listing.

Is Suzanne the world’s best paper airplane?

Suzanne is a well-known design by John M. Collins. Joe Ayoob threw it 69.14 m (226 ft 10 in) on 26 February 2012, a record later surpassed according to Guinness’s record history. Its reputation makes it a worthwhile design to learn, but that historic flight does not make it the current distance-record holder or prove it will outperform other designs for every flyer. Guinness’s record-history article describes the later marks.

For a collection of folds rather than a single design, Penguin Random House lists Collins’s The New World Champion Paper Airplane Book, published on 26 March 2013. The publisher says it includes 22 designs, step-by-step instructional photos, 16 tear-out model planes, Suzanne instructions, flight theory, and throwing advice.

Want a plane you can throw hard and send far?

Focus on a straight, repeatable launch and careful construction rather than assuming that a harder throw alone will produce a longer flight. Guinness World Records’ Vicki Newman describes the sport as precise: “the distance the aircraft will travel depends heavily on the precision with which it was created.” The statement appears in Guinness’s 2026 coverage.

  1. Start with a symmetrical fold. Match the wings and creases carefully; crooked geometry can make a plane veer or wobble.
  2. Use one paper choice for a few trials. A common printer-paper sheet is a practical starting point, not a proven optimum. Paper size and weight vary. For general-purpose flying, Guinness interview participant Shin Moo Joon recommended 80 gsm paper; that is an attributed suggestion, not a controlled universal finding.
  3. Change one thing at a time. Try a small adjustment to the folds or balance, then compare flights under similar conditions. Guinness’s 2022 interview discusses paper, shape, geometry, balance, and experimentation as relevant variables.
  4. Make the release consistent. Aim for a straight launch and compare results rather than changing the plane and throwing style together. The available sources do not establish one universally best throwing angle or paper brand.

These are practical ways to learn what works with your build, not a guaranteed recipe for a record flight. Guinness’s 2022 South Korea feature includes participant observations about design and materials. Chee Yie Jian noted that designs can vary with paper type, weight, geometry, and balance; interview participants’ comments should not be mistaken for laboratory comparisons.

What to keep in mind when choosing a design

  • Record holder does not mean universal winner. Records measure a specific outcome under defined conditions; they do not establish beginner ease, resilience, or best performance in every setting.
  • Do not compare distance with airtime. Decide which result matters to you before choosing a design.
  • Precision matters, but there is no magic paper claim here. The cited sources identify paper and construction as variables; they do not establish a universally optimal brand or weight for casual flying.
