“…And the Yarn Ran Away With the Hook” is a 2011 Make feature about artist Agata Oleksiak, known as Olek, and a crochet-based installation that grew from her apartment to a gallery. It describes yarn bombing—not a crochet pattern—and follows how yarn and a hook transformed everyday objects into part of an artwork.
What is “…And the Yarn Ran Away With the Hook”?
It is the title of a Make feature published December 4, 2011, about Olek’s yarn-based art. The materials named are yarn and a crochet hook, reportedly bought at a dollar store. The feature describes the project as yarn bombing: covering objects and spaces with crochet to change how they look and feel. Read the Make feature.
Who is Olek, and what did she make?
Agata Oleksiak, known as Olek, is the artist at the center of the feature. The work began in her apartment, where she crocheted coverings for household objects including a teapot and television. Rather than treating crochet as a small decorative finish, the project used it to envelop familiar things and make them part of an installation.
Where was the installation shown?
Olek’s work was shown at Christopher Henry Gallery. The 2011 article reported that she often stayed overnight in the installation because she wanted to sleep in her own bed, which had become part of the exhibit. It also said an installation was expected to move into the Smithsonian in 2012. That was a plan reported at the time; the source does not establish whether it happened or identify a specific Smithsonian venue.

How did Olek use crochet at public scale?
A later Make article, published July 17, 2013, reported that Olek crocheted a covering for a train stationed in Lodz, Poland. It shows another example of her taking crochet beyond household-scale objects, but does not establish the train’s present condition or display status. Read the report on Olek’s yarn-bombed train.
