To make DIY Mardi Gras party decorations, repeat the traditional purple, green, and gold palette across one large focal point, smaller accents, and a table centerpiece. Try a balloon garland or fringe backdrop as the room’s centerpiece, then add bead-wrapped cones, decorated jars, and chair-back wreaths around the space.
New Orleans & Company reports that Rex proclaimed purple, green, and gold the official Mardi Gras colors in 1872. A separate account links their symbolic meanings—purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power—to Rex’s 1892 “Symbolism of Colors” parade. Keep those dates distinct as you plan your color scheme.

| Project | Best place | Setup and reuse |
|---|---|---|
| Balloon garland | Wall focal point | Assemble balloons on a decorating strip; balloon décor is generally for the event rather than a take-home item. |
| Fringe or paper-fan backdrop | Wall behind a focal point | Layer fringe or fans; secure them with an attachment suited to the wall or frame. |
| Bead-wrapped cone | Table or shelf | Wrap beads around a cone; a vertical accent that can be moved or stored. |
| Decorated jar or vase | Dining or food table | Arrange filler, beads, or paper shapes in a jar or vase; adaptable for reuse. |
| Mask-accented balloon cluster | Room edges or table area | Cut and attach lightweight paper masks; extra cutting and attachment work. |
| Tissue-paper garland | Doorway, mantel, or table edge | A low-material paper decoration; reuse depends on its condition and storage. |
| Bead wreath chair-back decoration | Chair backs | Attach a bead wreath to each chair; guests can take the wreaths home. |
A balanced layout is one large balloon or fringe focal point, smaller garlands or mask accents around the room, and a centerpiece on the food or dining table. Repeating the same three colors in each zone helps different materials feel connected.
