The best glue for fabric depends on the material and the job: use a permanent fabric adhesive for many everyday repairs, a stretch-formulated glue for knits or dancewear, a heavy-duty adhesive for compatible heavier materials, and a fray-control product for raw edges. Check the exact glue’s material list and care instructions, and test it on a hidden spot before applying it to a visible area. There is no single adhesive established as best for every fabric.
Choose fabric glue by material and task
“Fabric glue” covers products with different intended uses. Compare the fabric named on the product page, how much flexibility the dried bond needs, whether glue might show through, and how the item will be cleaned. Strength alone does not determine whether an adhesive suits a wearable item.

Check washability and curing time before you start
“Washable” does not mean ready to wash as soon as the glue feels dry. Directions differ even among products from the same manufacturer, so follow the current package for the adhesive you choose.

Aleene’s FAQ separately recommends waiting at least 72 hours before laundering, while the product pages give the product-specific timings above. Use the instructions for your selected glue and check the current label, since formulas and directions may change. Do not dry-clean a product whose instructions prohibit it.
Understand the limits of fabric glue
Water-resistant is not waterproof
Aleene’s says its permanent fabric glues are water-resistant, not waterproof. Temporary adhesives such as No-Sew are designed to wash out, and the manufacturer says temporary-hold products are not machine washable. If the finished item will face frequent washing or exposure to water, check the product’s specific claims rather than treating “permanent” as a promise of waterproofing.

Fabric glue is not automatically a replacement for sewing
A fabric adhesive can be convenient for repairs or embellishments, but suitability depends on the fabric, application, and care demands. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that glue can replace stitching for every seam, garment, or use. For a bond that must withstand stretching, repeated laundering, or substantial strain, follow the product’s limitations and consider whether an adhesive-only repair is appropriate.

Apply carefully and plan for cleanup
- Test first: Apply a small amount to a concealed area of the same fabric and allow it to dry. Check for color change, darkening, visible residue, and whether the material remains flexible enough for the project.
- Prepare the fabric: Where the product directs it, prewash without fabric softener. Keep fabric positioned with tape or pins if the directions allow, and avoid shifting it while the adhesive sets.
- Follow the label for ventilation and handling: Aleene’s characterizes its specified water-based fabric glues as lower-toxicity and nonflammable compared with solvent-based products; this is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent safety assessment. Its Super Fabric Adhesive page directs users to work in a well-ventilated area. Use the current label and safety documentation for the exact product.
- Clean promptly, using the right method: According to Aleene’s FAQ, wet water-based glue may rinse with water, while wet solvent-based glue may require solvent cleanup. Test any cleanup method on an inconspicuous spot first. Dried glue may not come out completely; soaking in acetone may remove some dried adhesives but can fail and may damage fabric.
