Helsinki resident Kaarina Vuorinen learned midway through a tattoo session that the artist had used AI to create her large neo-traditional leg design. She was shocked and disappointed, but chose to let him finish. Her reaction raises a practical question for anyone commissioning a tattoo: when does AI assistance change what a client thinks they are agreeing to?
What happened to Kaarina Vuorinen
Futurism reported on November 9, 2024, that Vuorinen, a 30-year-old Helsinki resident, discovered during her session that her tattoo artist had used AI to make the design. The artist is not named in the report, which also does not give his response.
Vuorinen told the Wall Street Journal, as quoted by Futurism, that the artist “was kind of proud.” She said, “I was like, in shock. I was so disappointed.” She nevertheless let him complete the piece. Of the finished sword, she said, “It’s pretty,” but “it doesn’t have a soul.”

Why AI authorship can matter to a tattoo client
A tattoo is a permanent, personal artwork. A client may care not only about how the image looks, but also about who made it and how it came to be. Vuorinen’s account shows that an image can be visually acceptable to someone and still disappoint them because its creation did not match their expectations.

That makes disclosure and consent central. If an artist uses a generator to develop or substantially shape a design, a client may reasonably want to know before the stencil is on their skin—not during the session. The report does not establish a general industry disclosure rule, but the episode illustrates why discussing the design process in advance can prevent a damaging surprise.
Can an AI-generated image work as a tattoo?
Not every image that looks appealing on a screen will translate well into a tattoo. The report gives one example: Toronto tattoo artist Matthew Hatch said a client brought him an AI-generated image of galaxies in space and that, tattooed, it would have looked like a bruise. He summarized his view: “There are limitations on what is possible.” That is Hatch’s judgment about one image, not a universal technical verdict on AI-generated designs.

A tattoo artist still has to consider how the image will read on skin and whether it can be adapted into a workable design. Clients can ask the artist to explain any changes needed for the intended size, placement, and style, and to show the final design before tattooing begins.
Artists disagree about using AI
New Jersey-based tattoo artist Matt Doherty criticized AI use, telling the Wall Street Journal, as quoted by Futurism, “You’re essentially cheating,” and comparing it to “doing sports on steroids.” Those are Doherty’s opinions, not evidence of a consensus among tattoo artists.

Futurism also described a reporter’s individual test of CoCreate, which the article called a free tattoo image generator. Asked for “a red cardinal with dogwood flowers,” the generator produced an image with the word “imagine” beneath it. The reporter found the result less convincing and more uncanny than their own real tattoo. This was an illustrative personal test, not a formal product evaluation, and the report does not establish whether CoCreate is currently available.
Questions to ask before approving a design
- Was AI used to create or substantially develop this design?
- Who will make the final drawing and adapt it for my tattoo?
- Can I review and approve the finished design before the session starts?
- How will the image work at my chosen size and placement, and what changes do you recommend?
These questions help clarify authorship, expectations, and the practical design process before a permanent decision is made.

What the incident does—and does not—show
Vuorinen’s experience is a specific account, not a measure of how common AI-generated tattoo designs are. Futurism’s report includes individual views from Doherty and Hatch but no industry survey or prevalence statistics. It supports a narrower conclusion: clients and artists may disagree about AI’s role, and a clear conversation before the tattoo begins can make those expectations explicit.
