Blue is a familiar color associated with sadness, but it is not a universal code—and it is not the only hue linked to sorrow. A 2025 systematic review found associations with blue, purple, brown, grey, and black. The meaning depends on more than hue: lightness, saturation, language, and cultural context can all shape how a color is read. These findings describe associations, not proof that looking at a color makes someone feel sad.
Which colors are associated with sadness?
A 2025 systematic review of 132 peer-reviewed English-language articles, covering 42,266 participants in 64 countries and research published from 1895 to 2022, found sadness linked with several colors: blue, purple, brown, grey, and black. The review’s central point is that color-emotion relationships are usually many-to-many: one color can be associated with several emotions, and one emotion can be associated with several colors. Read the systematic review.
In that review, blue-sadness correspondence appeared in 53% of studies, while grey and black each appeared in 75%. These are percentages of studies reporting a correspondence—not percentages of people who feel sad when they see those colors. The figures also do not rank colors by how strongly they cause sadness.

- This liquid watercolor paint comes in an 8 ounce bottle
- The high-quality, saturated blue color is vibrant and intense from wet application to drying
- Our watercolors are easily intermixable with Sax watercolors for endless shading options
- A thicker viscosity allows for easy dispensing and control of bleeding and wicking
For painters, this is a useful distinction: a color can serve as a visual cue for sorrow without functioning as a fixed emotional label. A blue passage may suggest sadness in one image, while a dark brown or grey palette may do so in another. Hue alone does not settle the interpretation.
Why is sadness associated with blue?
“Feeling blue” is a familiar English expression, and it offers one recognizable route by which blue and sadness become linked in everyday language. But an idiom is not evidence that everyone shares the same association. A 2016 study of 795 participants across two studies in the United States and India found that most participants in both countries endorsed 10 of 14 proposed emotion metaphors, yet endorsement was often short of universal. The researchers also found that descriptors could connect with more than one emotion. See the study abstract.

Cross-cultural evidence points to both shared patterns and local variation. A broader 2020 study likewise examined how color-emotion associations relate to language and geographic proximity; its findings should not be taken to mean that every person or culture interprets a color identically. Read the study summary.
That makes blue a familiar convention, not a universal rule. In a painting, the viewer’s language and cultural experience may inform the reading, alongside the image’s subject, surrounding colors, and tonal treatment.

How lightness and saturation change the reading
Research on color and emotion does not reduce meaning to hue alone. The systematic review highlights lightness and saturation as dimensions that can shape color-emotion correspondences. A pale, low-saturation blue and a deep, vivid blue share a hue category, but they are not visually interchangeable; likewise, a near-black grey differs from a light grey.
When building a sorrowful palette, consider the whole color relationship rather than reaching for “sad blue” by default:

- Hue: Blue is a common association, but purple, brown, grey, and black also appear in the evidence.
- Lightness: A color’s value can change its visual weight and its relationship to neighboring forms.
- Saturation: Muted and vivid versions of a hue can create different impressions.
- Context: Subject matter, composition, surrounding colors, and cultural familiarity influence interpretation.
These are practical considerations for making and reading an image, not a formula for producing a particular emotion. The evidence does not establish that any single combination will make every viewer feel sorrow.

Not necessarily. Most correspondences gathered in the systematic review concern associations. Whether those associations translate into changes in experienced emotion in a particular setting remains an open research question.

A 2022 experiment tested a narrower issue: participants judged happy or sad faces shown against yellow, blue, or grey backgrounds. Yellow facilitated judgments of happy faces in that task, but blue and grey did not facilitate judgments of sad faces. The result depended on the face and background appearing together; it does not show that color can never affect emotion or perception. Read the 2022 study.
So a symbolic association, a change in how someone judges a face, and a change in how someone feels are different claims. The evidence on sadness and color supports the first; that particular experiment did not find the predicted facilitation for sadness judgments.
Using sadness-associated colors in a painting
For a painter, these findings are best used as possibilities rather than instructions. Blue may quickly evoke sorrow for some viewers, while a restrained grey, a dark brown, purple, or black may carry that role in a particular composition. The palette’s lightness, saturation, and surrounding hues help determine how the choice reads.
There is no evidence here for a detailed historical or religious meaning of each color across particular traditions. If a painting draws on a specific cultural symbolism, that meaning needs its own context and evidence; the general color-emotion findings do not establish it.
