Emerald green is showing up in designers’ color conversations, but it is best understood as a prominent choice—not a universal winner. To bring it into your home, first check how the shade looks in your room’s light and beside existing finishes. Then choose a scale, from a painted wall or cabinetry to wallpaper, upholstery, or a small accent.
How prominent is emerald green right now?
In 1stDibs’ 2024 survey of designers’ predictions for 2025, 22% named emerald green as the leading shade within the green color family. That did not make it the top color overall: 32% selected chocolate brown. The results describe designers’ forecasts, not consumer purchases or a measurement of how many homes use emerald.
The conversation has continued into 2026, with designers discussing muted emerald and earthy greens as part of a broader interest in richer, dustier color. Stephanie Hunt, founder and creative director of The Flairhunter, told ELLE Decor’s 2026 color-trend coverage: “2026 is all about jewel tones, but with an even dustier finish.”

On walls and patterned surfaces
Green can make a wall feel enveloping, particularly when a patterned surface supplies other colors. PJ Keeling, director at Zardi & Zardi, described the company’s Chinoiserie Panorama wallcovering in Malachite as drawing on the rich greens of historic country-house interiors. “The richness of the green creates a cocooning feel. We wanted the complimentary colors to zing, so we included deliberate accents of raspberry, deep violet ,and lustrous blue.”

Paint offers a simpler way to create a strong backdrop. Paint & Paper Library creative director Andy Greenall described its Malachite as “An exotic emerald shade with a sublime natural nuance, it has been read directly from a rare piece of ‘velvet malachite’.” In the example covered by Homes & Gardens, lighter ceiling and trim colors help frame the furniture and artwork against the rich green.
On cabinetry, with wood or a contrasting color
A deep green pantry can give a kitchen a focal point without making every surface the same color. Plain English design director Merlin Wright described a pantry painted in Sprouts, a rich green set against timber flooring and a garden view. The main kitchen was painted in muted pink, Silver Polish. Wright said the pairing reflects colors found in nature, and suggested vibrant blue, Tea Caddy, as another possible companion for Sprouts.

In a bathroom, alongside stone and metal
Interior designer Lucinda Sanford used Little Greene Azure Green in a bathroom with green-veined stone and gold hardware. She said: “I like to be adventurous with color and I’m a huge fan of bold greens.” Of the room, she added: “This bathroom with its sloping ceilings had a Moroccan feel and we felt this Azure Green from Little Greene enhanced this whilst bringing impact and luxury. It complements the green veining of the stone and sets off the gold hardware like jewelry.”

If a full painted room feels like too much, green can enter through a sofa, textile, tile, tinted glass, stone, or a smaller painted feature. Designers interviewed by Architectural Digest India point to applications such as an island, backsplash, cabinetry, or feature wall, and show a jewel-toned olive-green couch as a restrained accent. The same advice applies to paint: a smaller area lets you bring in color without committing every wall to it.

How to choose an emerald shade for your room
1. Start with the room’s light
A green that feels vivid in a sunny room may look quite different in a north-facing space. Test a sample where you plan to use it and observe it under the room’s usual daylight and artificial lighting. A sample helps you assess the color in context; it cannot guarantee that the finished surface will look identical.
2. Compare undertones with nearby finishes
Look at the green beside the materials that will remain in the room. Designers cited by Architectural Digest India suggest warmer greens with warm woods, brass, and beige, and cooler greens with marble or steel. The aim is not to match every green element exactly, but to avoid a shade that clashes with the room’s existing palette.

3. Choose the right amount of green
Decide whether green should be the room’s main surface color or an accent. A wall or wallcovering makes a more immersive statement; cabinetry gives the color a defined zone; upholstery or a small feature is easier to keep visually contained. Deep green in a small enclosed room with no natural light can feel claustrophobic, so consider the space and its lighting before covering it extensively.
4. Plan what will balance it
Rich green can be set against lighter trim, ceilings, furnishings, or artwork, as in the Malachite paint example. Timber can provide warmth, while deliberate complementary colors can make the palette livelier: the cited examples include pink with green cabinetry and raspberry, deep violet, and blue in a green wallcovering. Use contrast intentionally rather than adding color simply to echo the trend.

What designers warn against
Two common mistakes are choosing a green that fights the room’s light and trying to match every green element. As MuseLAB co-founders Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani put it in Architectural Digest India: “Going matchy-matchy or picking a green that fights with the light. Context is everything.” Judge the shade with the actual room, finishes, and lighting in view.
