Denyse Schmidt Quilts offers the free Scottie Dog project pattern as a digital download. It makes a small stuffed patchwork dog—not a quilt block—and is rated Confident Beginner. You’ll need fabric scraps, stuffing, and a few basic sewing supplies.
What the free pattern includes
The official listing describes a one-page digital pattern with instructions, diagrams, and measurements for making a Scottie Dog softie. It is formatted for US Letter or A4 and can be viewed with Adobe Reader. The listing says the download link allows three attempts to download or open the file; availability and download terms can change.
Get it from the Denyse Schmidt Quilts Scottie Dog pattern page. The Los Angeles Times also reported in 2010 that Schmidt was sharing the free pattern, which included a pattern and sewing instructions: Los Angeles Times, 2010.

The project is designed for scraps or pre-cut mini-charms. The archived pattern lists fabric scraps, fiberfill stuffing, and either two 1/2- to 3/4-inch buttons or felt scraps for the eyes. A scarf or ribbon is optional. Wool and vintage cotton scraps are among the materials shown in the project examples.

Is it suitable for a beginner?
The official skill rating is Confident Beginner, and the instructions assume basic piecing and quilting knowledge. The dog is assembled with a box-pillow type construction: patchwork faces are joined by a side strip to create a three-dimensional softie.
If you have sewn patchwork before, the project is intended to be approachable. If this is your first sewing project, you may want help with keeping seams consistent, turning the sewn shape, and distributing stuffing evenly.

This is a stuffed patchwork softie, not a Scottie-shaped quilt block or a full-size quilt pattern. Schmidt’s description traces her interest in Scottie Dogs to one she encountered at the Elephant’s Trunk flea market, and says she has collected and photographed vintage patchwork examples. She notes that the pattern’s origin is uncertain, possibly appearing in a popular women’s magazine around the 1940s.

Can you sell items made from the pattern?
No commercial resale is allowed under the stated pattern terms. The current listing says, “Items made with this pattern may not be produced for commercial resale.” The archived PDF repeats that restriction and includes a copyright notice for Denyse Schmidt Designs, LLC. Free access to the pattern does not grant permission to reproduce it or commercially sell items made from it.
