You can make garden-inspired decorations with air-dry clay, but treat them as sheltered accents—not permanent outdoor fixtures. Even a coat of varnish does not make ordinary air-dry clay waterproof. These five ideas range from flat plant tags to modeled mushrooms, and work best on a covered porch, in a window, or brought indoors after display.
Before you start: plan for sheltered display
Air-dry clay is porous and vulnerable to moisture and changing outdoor conditions. Crayola says sealing its Air-Dry Clay does not waterproof it and recommends indoor display; Sculpd likewise advises against outdoor decoration because moisture, temperature changes, and harsh conditions can damage its clay. A clear varnish can be part of finishing a piece, but it is not a guarantee against rain or weather damage. See Crayola’s Air-Dry Clay FAQ and Sculpd’s air-dry clay guidance.
Use the projects below as garden-themed decorations for a covered spot or temporary display. Avoid leaving them exposed to rain, and bring them inside between uses if they are displayed outdoors.

Supplies and basic preparation
- Air-dry clay and a clean work surface
- Rolling pin or other smooth cylinder for flattening
- Leaf, flower, or paper templates, depending on the project
- Precision craft knife for cutting shapes; handle it carefully
- Straw or skewer for making hanging holes
- Sandpaper, acrylic craft paint, and a brush
- Optional clear varnish for a finished look—not waterproofing
- Metal plant stakes or string for display, as needed
Follow the drying directions for your specific clay. Crayola says its clay should be completely dry for 72 hours before sealing; a Søstrene Grene plant-marker project says to dry pieces for a few days. Those are product- and project-specific directions, not a universal drying time. Make sure a piece is fully dry before painting or sealing. Crayola lists tempera, acrylic, and watercolour paints for thoroughly dried clay, and recommends permanent pigment-based markers for writing. If using varnish, test compatibility on a small area first. Details are in Crayola’s FAQ.
1. Vegetable-shaped plant markers
These flat cutouts make playful labels for a covered potting bench or sheltered planter display. The method follows a plant-marker project published by Søstrene Grene, which uses shaped clay pieces hung from metal plant stakes.

- Roll clay into an even sheet about 5–10 mm thick, the range used in the Søstrene Grene project.
- Cut simple vegetable silhouettes, such as a carrot, radish, or pea pod. Keep the shapes broad enough to resist snapping.
- Punch a hole near the top with a straw or skewer, leaving a generous border of clay around it.
- Let the pieces dry for a few days, following the clay’s own package directions. Sand rough edges once dry.
- Paint the shapes with acrylic paint. Once the paint is dry, add clear varnish if desired, understanding it will not make the tag weatherproof.
- Thread each tag onto a metal plant stake. Display it under cover or bring it indoors after use.
The thickness, drying approach, sanding, painting, varnish, and stake display are drawn from the Søstrene Grene plant-marker project; choosing specific vegetable silhouettes is a simple variation.
2. A tiny mushroom ornament
A little mushroom suits a fairy garden or a shelf beside garden tools. Sculpey’s air-dry terra-cotta project makes a mushroom photo holder; adapting its mushroom shape into a simple ornament is an idea rather than a tested outdoor project. Keep the finished piece sheltered.

- Shape a short stem and a rounded cap from clay, or make a single, sturdy mushroom silhouette for a simpler version.
- Join separate parts by gently scoring the contact areas and pressing them together with a little water, if the clay maker’s instructions allow it.
- Check that the base is broad enough for the mushroom to sit upright. Avoid thin stems or delicate projections that can break.
- Let the piece dry completely according to the clay packaging, then paint it with acrylics. Add small dots, a contrasting cap, or a painted grass line.
- Display on a covered porch shelf, in a window, or as a temporary fairy-garden accent that comes indoors afterward.
Sculpey’s source project is an air-dry terra-cotta mushroom photo holder, while the garden-ornament treatment here is an adaptation. See Sculpey’s mushroom photo-holder project.
3. Botanical-imprint hanging
Use a leaf’s veins or a small botanical pattern to make a hanging accent for a window or covered porch. Sculpey’s botanical wall-hanging project supports the basic approach of pressing plant detail into clay; this is still an indoor or sheltered decoration, not a weatherproof outdoor piece.

- Roll a slab of clay to an even thickness and cut a simple shape, such as a circle, arch, or rounded rectangle.
- Lay a leaf or other botanical material over the surface. Press gently with a rolling pin or fingertips to transfer its texture, then lift it away carefully.
- Make a hanging hole near the top, leaving enough clay around it to support the cord.
- Dry the piece completely according to the clay instructions. Paint selectively to highlight the impression, or leave it unpainted for a natural look.
- Thread with string or ribbon and hang indoors, in a window, or under a covered porch roof.
For the underlying pressed-botanical and hanging approach, see Sculpey’s botanical wall-hanging project.

Small medallions are a variation on the botanical-imprint idea: each one captures a leaf or flower texture in a compact disc. The specific medallion project is a suggested adaptation, not a separate tested project.

- SOFTEN WITH WATER: Add water to make the clay softer for ease of use!
- Roll a small piece of clay and cut a disc with a round cutter or the rim of a small cup.
- Press a leaf, petal, or flower head lightly into the surface. Remove it without dragging across the impression.
- Add a hanging hole if you want to string the medallion, or leave it solid for tabletop display.
- Let it dry fully, then paint the raised or indented details with a fine brush. A muted background with a contrasting detail can make the texture easier to see.
- Hang or arrange the medallions in a sheltered place, such as an indoor window or covered porch.
The pressed pattern builds on the process in Sculpey’s botanical wall-hanging project; choosing a small disc and making multiple pieces are variations.
5. Miniature garden sign or label
A broad, sturdy tag can identify a potted herb or add a whimsical name to a covered display. This adapts the shaped plant-marker method; write the label after the clay is dry so the lettering stays crisp.
- Cut a wide tag from rolled clay, keeping it thicker and less delicate than a thin ornament.
- Round the corners and make a hole at the top, or leave the tag intact to attach to a stake after drying.
- Dry it completely according to the package directions and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
- Paint a background if desired. Once dry, write the name with a permanent pigment-based marker or paint and a fine brush.
- Attach it to a stake or hang it in a sheltered location. Do not leave it where rain or repeated dampness can reach it.
The tag shape and stake display adapt the Søstrene Grene plant-marker method; the botanical hanging project is another reference for a hole-and-cord display. Crayola identifies permanent pigment-based markers as an option for writing on thoroughly dried clay in its Air-Dry Clay FAQ.
Choose an idea by how you want to display it
| Project | Best suited to | Display style |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetable-shaped marker | A playful plant label | Stake, under cover |
| Mushroom ornament | A modeled fairy-garden accent | Standing ornament, sheltered |
| Botanical-imprint hanging | A larger leaf-texture decoration | Hanging indoors or under cover |
| Leaf or flower medallion | Small textured accents | Hanging or tabletop display, sheltered |
| Miniature sign or label | A readable name or plant label | Stake or hanging display, under cover |
Finishing and care
Let each piece dry fully before adding paint or varnish, and follow the instructions for the particular clay you bought. Crayola’s 72-hour guidance applies to its own Air-Dry Clay; other clays may call for a different drying period. Paint compatibility and finish can vary, so testing a small area is sensible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep finished decorations away from rain and damp soil. A sheltered spot reduces direct exposure but does not change the material’s limitations. If a piece is used outside temporarily, bring it indoors afterward rather than treating varnish as a substitute for weatherproof material.
