Good sewing-and-embroidery projects include zipper pouches, patches, placemats, T-shirts, ornaments, and fabric covers. The easiest way to combine the two crafts is to embroider the fabric while it is still flat, support it with a stabilizer suited to its stretch and weight, and sew the project together afterward.
What can you sew and embroider together?
Choose a project based on its fabric, construction order, and how much room the design needs. Flat pieces are generally easier to embroider before assembly.

Embroidered patches
Hoop stabilizer with wool felt or another suitable fabric, stitch the design, remove excess backing, and trim the patch. A clearly defined outer border makes it easier to cut a neat edge. SewGuide’s patch tutorial describes this approach.
#1 Best Overall
- ▶TEMPORARY STABILIZER: It provides temporary support for embroidery projects. They are best used on firmly woven fabrics and fabrics made from natural fibers. Our tear away embroidery stabilizer can be torn away easily yet provides adequate stability.
- ▶WIDE APPLICATIONS: Best used on natural fibers, thicker and softer fabrics. Great for hoop embroidery, applique, thread stretching, computerized lace embroidery and decorative stitch sewing.
- ▶SKIN-FRIENDLY MATERIAL: 100% first-class Polyester which is acid and lead free! No any itching worries even you use our tear away embroidery stabilizer on your skin-touch clothes.
- ▶EASY TO USE: Hoop the tear away embroidery stabilizer together with the fabric, then stitch. After finishing your project, just tear the stabilizer away easily and clean in either horizontal or vertical directions around the stitches.
- ▶MEDIUM WEIGHT FOR ALL THE STITCH DENSITY (COUNTS): It is medium weight 1.8 oz (50 Grams) tear away embroidery stabilizer for light to medium stitch density, for much denser designs, you can use more than one layer.
Monogrammed zipper pouches
Embroider the pouch front while it is flat, before attaching the zipper or assembling the pouch. Sticky stabilizer can help hold the front in the hoop. See the SewCanShe zipper pouch pattern.
Quilted placemats
Quilt the placemat first, then embroider it using a hoop large enough for the design; the cited pattern uses an approximately 8-inch-square hoop and sticky stabilizer. SewCanShe’s placemat pattern shows the sequence.
T-shirts and knit garments
Lettering can be added by hand or with free-motion machine work, but knits stretch and need support behind the embroidery. A basted backing, lightweight fusible, or tear-away stabilizer can help control movement. SewGuide covers embroidering on knits and free-motion embroidery.

Ornaments and fabric covers
Embellish fabric ornaments and machine covers before assembling them, when the pieces are easier to hoop or handle. Choose backing to suit the fabric’s weight and the density of the stitches; SewCanShe’s fabric ornament pattern is one example.

- ▶PERMANENT STABILIZER: It is a permanent stabilizer will remain forever affixed to the embroidery and will provide permanent support for the design, it also helps retain the design's shape after repeated washing.
- ▶WIDE APPLICATIONS: Best used on knits, fleece, denim and for fabric that is unstable, moves or distorts when tugged on. Great for hoop embroidery, applique, thread stretching, computerized lace embroidery and decorative stitch sewing.
- ▶SKIN-FRIENDLY MATERIAL: 100% first-class Polyester which is acid and lead free! No any itching worries even you use our cut away embroidery stabilizer on your skin-touch clothes.
- ▶FIT ALL THE HOOPS: The width 10" allows to cut into 8"x10" to fit 4x4 hoop, to cut into 10"x12" to fit 5x7 hoop or to cut into smaller sizes to fit 1 1/2x2 Oval Pocket Hoop, (Hoops:1"x2.5", 5"x12",6“x6”, 6"x10", 7”x12” etc.).
- ▶MEDIUM WEIGHT FOR ALL THE STITCH DENSITY (COUNTS): It is medium weight 2.5oz (70 Grams) cut away embroidery stabilizer for light to medium stitch density, for much denser designs, you can use more than one layer.
Which stabilizer should you use?
Match the stabilizer to how much the fabric moves and whether the embroidery needs support after stitching. Try the combination on a scrap first, especially with a stretchy, slippery, sheer, or densely stitched fabric.
- Medium-weight tear-away: A practical starting point for many stable woven fabrics. It can be removed after stitching, making it a useful general-purpose option.
- Cut-away or fusible backing: Consider these for stretch fabrics or dense designs that need lasting support. Cut-away remains behind the embroidery; fusible backing adheres to the fabric.
- Water-soluble backing: Useful when visible backing must disappear, including some sheer or open fabrics. Follow the stabilizer’s directions for removal.
- Knits: Support the embroidery from behind with basted fabric, lightweight fusible, or tear-away stabilizer. Keep the knit smooth rather than stretching it in the hoop. See SewGuide’s knit embroidery guidance.
- Satin: Because satin is slippery and can distort, use a hoop or frame, gentle tension, and a suitable stabilizer. SewGuide’s satin guidance discusses these precautions.
How to plan and make an embroidered sewing project
- Choose a design that fits. Check both the project area and the hoop’s usable space before stitching. Leave working room around the design; guidance in the SewGuide hoop tutorial recommends a hoop about 1–2 inches larger than the design.
- Test a fabric-and-stabilizer sample. Use a scrap to check how the fabric behaves and whether the backing provides enough support.
- Hoop the fabric and backing smoothly. Keep them flat without pulling the fabric taut or stretching it. Excess tension can distort the finished work.
- Stitch with suitable tools and technique. For free-motion embroidery, stitch outlines before fills and guide the fabric without pulling it through the needle. Select a needle and thread appropriate to the fabric thickness.
- Remove excess backing and trim carefully. Take away excess tear-away or cut-away material as appropriate, then use small, sharp scissors around the edges. The SewGuide patch tutorial illustrates trimming for patches.
- Finish construction once the embroidery is stable. Add seams, zippers, quilting, or garment construction after stitching the design, unless the chosen project pattern specifies a different order.
Can you embroider with a regular sewing machine?
Yes, a regular sewing machine can be used for free-motion embroidery when the machine and project are set up for it. This differs from using a dedicated embroidery machine with a compatible embroidery hoop and loaded design. For free-motion work, support the fabric with suitable stabilizer, use an appropriate needle and thread, stitch outlines before fills, and guide the fabric without pulling it. Machine users may also need bobbin thread and a way to load designs if their machine supports built-in embroidery functions.

What supplies do you need to get started?
- Fabric suited to the project
- Embroidery thread or floss
- A hoop sized for the design
- Medium-weight tear-away stabilizer for many stable woven projects
- Needles appropriate to the fabric and thread
- Transfer pen or transfer paper
- Small, sharp scissors
For machine embroidery, check whether you also need a compatible embroidery hoop, bobbin thread, or a USB method for loading designs. Confirm compatibility with your machine before buying accessories.
How to prevent puckering or stretching
Most distortion starts with unsupported or overstretched fabric. Keep the material smooth in the hoop without forcing it taut, and choose backing for the fabric: knits need support from behind, while satin calls for gentle tension and a suitable stabilizer. A scrap test can reveal whether the setup is stable before you embroider the finished piece. Also check that the design fits the hoop and that the needle and thread suit the fabric’s thickness.
