A grab bag is either a surprise assortment of items, a mixed collection, an emergency supply bag, or a hands-on activity kit—the meaning depends on context. For painters and other makers, it often means a mystery bundle of art supplies or a classroom exercise that turns ordinary materials into an invention.
What is a grab bag?
A grab bag is a container or collection of assorted items, often chosen or packed so the recipient does not know exactly what is inside. The phrase also describes a miscellaneous mixture. In the United States, it can refer to an emergency supply bag; in a craft setting, it can mean a bag of materials for a creative challenge. In the surprise-game sense, British English often uses “lucky dip”; for emergency use, “go bag” is common.
What do you get in a mystery grab bag?
There is no standard contents list. A retail mystery grab bag might contain art supplies, seasonal products, home décor, or clearance goods, and the assortment can vary by seller or location. A disclosed bundle tells you what is included; a mystery grab bag sells the surprise, so usefulness and value depend on what you receive.
For example, The Krazy Coupon Lady’s April 2026 guide described a featured Michaels grab bag or box for $10 and estimated the pictured contents at $266.78. Those figures describe one dated example, not a typical price, guaranteed value, or ongoing offer. The guide noted that the exact contents were unknown until opening. Before buying, check the seller’s description and policies, especially:
- Price and number of items, if stated
- Theme or product category
- Whether a minimum value is disclosed and how it is calculated
- Item condition, return rules, and seller reputation
- Whether duplicates, seasonal leftovers, or clearance items are likely
Is a grab bag the same as a lucky bag?
They overlap: both can hide the contents until purchase or opening. In Japan, fukubukuro (“lucky bags”) are a New Year retail tradition. A bag typically contains several products in an opaque package, with the possibility that their value exceeds the price—and the risk that some items will not be wanted. The tradition is associated with the Edo and Meiji periods, and offerings have included clothing and accessories, travel packages, and experiences. Web Japan’s account of fukubukuro dates to January 24, 2007, so its cited prices are historical examples, not current offers.

How to make a grab-bag invention activity
A craft grab bag can be a structured creativity exercise rather than a random assortment of products to buy. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s activity is designed for groups of three to five and takes an estimated 30 minutes to one hour. Each prepared bag contains six or seven ordinary materials, such as paper clips, string or yarn, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, rubber bands, balloons, and paper cups. - Prepare the bags. Put six or seven safe, varied materials in each bag. For a painting- or craft-focused group, consider craft sticks, pipe cleaners, rubber bands, paper cups, tape, markers, and sketch paper.
- Design and build. Have each group decide how its materials could address the problem, then make a model.
- Share the idea. Invite groups to explain the problem, their design choices, and what they would change with more time or materials.
Use age-appropriate supplies and supervise scissors or other tools. The Smithsonian activity is a useful starting point for classrooms, camps, family projects, and parties; adapt the challenge and materials to the participants.

What should go in an emergency grab bag?
An emergency grab bag is for evacuation or household resilience, not a retail mystery box. Its contents should reflect local hazards and the needs of everyone in the household, including children, older adults, people with disabilities or chronic conditions, and pets. Bournemouth University’s literature review lists examples such as useful phone numbers, keys, toiletries, sanitary supplies, prescribed medication, a battery radio, torch and spare batteries, candles and matches, first-aid supplies, a mobile phone, cash, identification documents, spare clothes, blankets, bottled water, ready-to-eat food, and an opener. That list is a planning reference, not a universal standard. The review says empirical evidence on the effectiveness of grab bags is limited and calls for more research; it does not establish a quantified reduction in injury or mortality from owning one. Tailor your kit to your circumstances rather than treating a generic list as a guarantee.
