The offer is limited by eligibility, region, and feature access: K–12 users do not get Figma’s AI tools, Figma Make, or Figma Sites.

Who qualifies for free Figma for Education?
Figma says applicants must have an existing account, be current students or educators, be old enough to consent independently, and apply using a school email. Availability is limited to selected regions. Non-teaching school staff do not qualify under Figma’s stated standard.
Self-directed study, startups, edtech companies, and nonprofits are not considered qualifying classrooms. Online courses, bootcamps, and workshops must provide structured, curriculum-based instruction led by a teacher or mentor. How can an educator or student get access?
The right application route depends on whether one person needs access or a school wants to provide it to students. An individual educator applying for personal use should apply with a school-issued email and select “High school.” Educators seeking access for students should use Figma’s separate K–12 application.
For individual high-school applications, Figma lists access periods of one year for students and two years for educators; reapplication is required at the end of the term. For a K–12 school deployment, the domain administrator determines how long access lasts.

Can a school district deploy Figma for students?
Yes. Figma documents school administration through Microsoft Education and Google Workspace. The Microsoft route can include SAML single sign-on and provisioning through Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft’s setup guide, updated February 10, 2026, describes creating the Figma account, configuring SAML SSO, setting up the organization, and preparing classroom use. It says qualified K–12 organizations receive Figma’s Enterprise license and access to Figma and FigJam: Set up Figma for Microsoft Education.
Figma also describes license administration from Google Admin Console through its App Licensing System, as well as integrations with Google Meet, Calendar, Docs, and Sheets. Schools should follow the current instructions for their own administrative environment in Figma’s education help article.

Which Figma features are included for K–12?
Figma’s current help documentation says K–12 and high-school Education users cannot access AI tools, including Figma Make and the agent in Figma Design, or Figma Sites. Higher-education and bootcamp Education users have different feature access, so those features should not be assumed to come with a K–12 account.
Figma’s current help page describes the school or district K–12 offer as Enterprise, while the company’s 2025 Form 10-K says its Organization plan is free for K–12 students and educators. Because Figma’s public materials use different plan names, it is more accurate to describe the offer as free Figma for Education access through a school or district than to promise a particular plan label. The SEC filing is available at Figma, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K.

What can teachers use in the classroom?
Figma’s high-school Design Fundamentals resources include structured lessons, short video tutorials, ready-to-use files, and classroom templates. Activities cover concepts such as frames and vector shapes, with examples including websites and digital posters. Eligible users can verify an education account for free, and eligible primary and secondary schools can contact Figma’s education team about school deployment. What happens to student files when education access expires?
Education status is tied to the email address used for verification. Figma says changing that email after verification revokes the status. When access expires, education team members may become view-only. The effect on a team depends on its files and ownership:
- Owner teams with four or more files may be downgraded and locked, though users can download or move files.
- Teams with three or fewer files can continue under Starter limits.
- Reverification restores education features for users who remain eligible.
Before a student graduates or an account changes, teachers should check who owns classroom files and arrange to preserve or move important work while access remains available.
How did Figma’s classroom offer develop?
In an April 23, 2020 post, Figma said more than 100,000 people around the world were already using Figma in classrooms. That is a historical company-reported figure, not a current adoption count. The post quoted UC Berkeley professor Eric Paulos: “Students today are used to collaborating together online in nearly everything they do—Figma beautifully brings that rich collaborative experience to visual design.” Read Bringing Figma to even more classrooms.
