A holiday tree skirt is a fabric covering arranged around the base of a Christmas tree. It hides the stand, gives presents a finished backdrop and, under a fresh-cut tree, can help catch fallen needles or sap. Choose its diameter by measuring the stand and the tree’s lowest branches—not by tree height alone.
How to choose the right tree skirt size
Measure the assembled stand, then measure the spread of the lowest branches. The skirt needs to cover the stand and should generally extend about 4–6 inches beyond the lowest branches. A little extra coverage can hide the stand or tree bag, but leave enough clear floor space to avoid creating a trip hazard.

These ranges overlap because branch spread, stand size and room layout vary. Retail category guidance also points to 36-inch skirts for compact setups, 48-inch skirts for many standard home trees and 56-inch skirts for fuller trees or wider stands; those are common examples, not a substitute for measuring your own tree (Walmart, undated: Walmart). Balsam Hill recommends a skirt at least 6 inches wider than the full tree width and lists a 72-inch boucle option (2026: Balsam Hill).

A quick fit check
- Confirm the diameter covers the assembled stand and any exposed tree bag.
- Check that the edge reaches beyond the lowest branches without obstructing nearby furniture or walkways.
- For a real tree, make sure the opening and fabric do not block access to the water reservoir.
- Consider where presents will sit and how much floor space is available.
Tree skirt or tree collar?
A skirt is a soft fabric cover that can be folded for storage and comes in a wide range of colors, patterns and textures. A collar is a rigid or semi-rigid ring or basket-like cover, often made from wood, metal, wicker or woven material. It tends to stay in place and gives the base a more built-in look, while fabric skirts offer more decorative variety.
Choose based on both appearance and use. A stable collar or weighted skirt may be less prone to shifting in a home with pets or young children. With a real tree, prioritize access to the water reservoir whichever cover you choose.

Materials, finishes and care
Common skirt materials include polyester, burlap, velvet, satin, felt, cotton, fur, cable knit and woven natural fibers. Designs range from red, green and plaid to white, silver, gold and seasonal motifs such as snowflakes, snowmen and reindeer. For a more durable finish, look for details such as a backing, lining or bound edge rather than raw-cut felt.
Care instructions differ by fabric and construction, so check the product’s care label before washing. Retailer category guidance recommends following that label; do not assume a decorative or textured skirt is machine washable (Walmart: care guidance).
