The Best Adobe Photoshop Alternatives for 2026

Affinity is the broadest alternative to consider, but the right Photoshop replacement depends on whether you edit layers, process RAW photos, paint, or need PSD handoffs.

For the closest broad Photoshop replacement, start with Affinity by Canva; for open-source desktop editing, choose GIMP; for quick browser-based PSD work, try Photopea; and for painting, choose Krita. No alternative is a universal substitute. Photographers focused on RAW files may be better served by a dedicated photo workflow, while professionals exchanging complex Photoshop documents should test those files before switching. The recommendations below reflect current product information and comparison coverage, not a claim that every application has passed the same hands-on test suite.

Choose by the work you need to replace

Photoshop combines several jobs that are handled better by different kinds of software. Before comparing features, decide which of these describes your main workload:

  • Layered compositing, retouching, and design: Consider Affinity by Canva, GIMP, Photopea, or Pixelmator Pro.
  • RAW development and photo libraries: Consider Capture One, ON1 Photo RAW, DxO PhotoLab, or darktable. These are photography-first tools, not complete Photoshop clones.
  • Digital painting, comics, and illustration: Krita is a strong free option; Procreate is an iPad-focused choice, and Clip Studio Paint is geared toward illustration and comics.
  • Templates and collaborative graphics: Canva and Adobe Express are design-first services, not substitutes for deep pixel editing. Figma is primarily for interface and collaborative design.
  • Occasional edits without installing an app: Photopea offers a browser-based route, with trade-offs around browser performance, connectivity, and sensitive files.

A useful test is whether the application can handle the parts of Photoshop you actually rely on: masks, editable text, adjustment layers, retouching, print color management, plug-ins, automation, or client handoff. A tool that crops photos and applies filters is not necessarily a practical replacement.

Quick comparison

Application Best fit Pricing information available Key limitation
Affinity by Canva Broad desktop creative work, including raster editing 2026 coverage reports a free application; verify current licensing and paid AI terms with Affinity Broad workflow fit does not establish Photoshop feature parity or exact PSD fidelity
GIMP Free, open-source desktop raster editing Free and open source Different interface and workflows; not a photo cataloguer
Photopea Quick browser-based editing and PSD work Free and premium terms should be checked on the live site Browser, connectivity, privacy, and large-file performance can matter
Pixelmator Pro Mac and iPad users seeking a polished native editor Apple lists $49.99 for the Mac purchase; Apple Creator Studio is $12.99/month or $129/year in the U.S. Apple-only; the subscription version and one-time Mac purchase are not identical
Krita Digital painting, concept art, and comics Free and open source, with optional support/store mechanisms Painting-first, not a Lightroom-style photo manager or universal retouching replacement
Capture One, ON1, DxO PhotoLab, darktable RAW processing and photography workflows Current prices are not established here; check each vendor Photography tools do not replace all layer-based compositing work

Platform support changes, and the available information does not establish a complete, verified platform matrix for every 2026 product version. Check the vendor download page for your operating system before choosing. Apple confirms Pixelmator Pro availability for Mac and iPad; its page specifies macOS 26 and iPadOS 26 compatibility and hardware requirements for iPad. Apple’s Pixelmator Pro page has current requirements.

Best broad replacement: Affinity by Canva

Affinity is the most plausible starting point for someone who wants a broad desktop creative application rather than a browser editor or a RAW cataloguer. Current 2026 coverage describes the product as combining raster, vector, and page-layout workspaces, and reports that the application is available free while Canva AI features are separate. That makes it a notable option for people seeking to avoid a recurring Photoshop subscription.

However, “closest broad replacement” does not mean identical to Photoshop. Complex PSD behavior, the availability of particular tools, account or cloud requirements, the treatment of older Affinity files, and the exact boundary between free features and paid AI services should be checked against the current terms and your own files. Start at Affinity’s product hub and confirm the license and platform details before committing.

Independent 2026 coverage places Affinity among the leading Photoshop alternatives, but does not establish perfect feature parity. See Digital Camera World’s comparison and TechRadar’s 2026 review for additional context.

Best free, open-source desktop editor: GIMP

GIMP is a sensible choice for people who want a native desktop raster editor without a vendor subscription, including Linux users and people who value open-source software. It can handle many everyday image-editing jobs, but its interface conventions and workflows differ from Photoshop’s. Moving over can mean learning new ways to perform familiar tasks, and a Photoshop-specific workflow may not translate cleanly.

Do not assume that PSD import or export preserves every element of a complex document. Test the files and features you depend on, particularly text, masks, effects, color handling, and advanced Photoshop-specific elements. GIMP is also not a Lightroom replacement or a full photo cataloguer. Download and project information are available from GIMP; TechRadar’s review and Digital Camera World’s guide provide comparison context.

Best browser-based option: Photopea

Photopea is useful for quick edits, school or shared computers, and opening or modifying PSD files without installing a desktop application. Its Photoshop-like interface can also make it less of a leap for occasional users who already know Photoshop’s menus.

A browser editor brings constraints that a native application does not: performance depends on the browser and device, large documents can be cumbersome, and connectivity may affect availability or features. For confidential client work, unreleased products, medical or legal imagery, and proprietary assets, review the service’s current privacy and file-handling terms before using it. Do not assume that the ability to open a PSD means it will preserve every layer or effect on export. Check current features and terms at Photopea.

Best for Mac and iPad: Pixelmator Pro

Pixelmator Pro is the clearest option here for people working within Apple’s ecosystem who want a native editor rather than a Windows or Linux application. Apple lists a one-time Mac purchase for $49.99 and Apple Creator Studio at $12.99 per month or $129 per year in the U.S. Apple says Creator Studio includes Pixelmator Pro for Mac and iPad and adds the Warp Tool; the standalone Mac purchase is separate. Apple lists a 30-day trial for the subscription.

The subscription includes other creative applications, so its value depends on whether you want that bundle—not just Pixelmator Pro. Check the device requirements and feature differences for your specific Mac or iPad before buying. Apple says Pixelmator Pro includes AI features built around Apple Intelligence. That description alone does not establish how a particular task performs, whether it works offline, or whether its result fits a professional workflow. See Apple’s Pixelmator Pro page for current pricing, compatibility, and feature information.

Best for painting and illustration: Krita

Krita is a specialist choice for brush-based work, concept art, comics, and digital painting—not a general-purpose Photoshop clone. Its strength is the painting workflow, and the project describes it as a free, open-source application. It is not the natural pick for RAW cataloguing or a Photoshop-centered agency handoff. For an iPad-first illustration workflow, Procreate is another category-specific option; Clip Studio Paint is aimed at comics and illustration. Get Krita from its official site.

Best for RAW-heavy photography: use a photography-first editor

If your routine is importing camera files, correcting white balance, recovering highlights, applying local adjustments, and synchronizing edits across a shoot, a dedicated photography application may be a better fit than a Photoshop imitation. These tools can also be paired with a separate pixel editor for detailed compositing or retouching.

  • Capture One: Consider it for professional RAW development and tethered photography. It is photography-first, not a general Photoshop substitute. See Capture One.
  • ON1 Photo RAW: Consider it if you want RAW processing, effects, and AI tools in one photography application. Verify current plans and licensing at ON1.
  • DxO PhotoLab: Consider it for RAW work, lens corrections, and noise reduction; it is not a full layer-based compositing replacement. See DxO PhotoLab.
  • darktable: A free, open-source RAW workflow option, better compared with photography development tools than with Photoshop. See darktable.
  • Luminar Neo: A candidate for people prioritizing AI-assisted enhancement and quick results. Assess manual control and current license terms at Skylum Luminar.

These categories solve different problems: RAW development is not the same job as pixel-level retouching, and neither is the same as painting or template design. Some photographers will get a better fit from a RAW editor plus a separate layer-based editor.

PSD compatibility: test the round trip, not just the import

“Supports PSD” can mean only that an application opens the file. It does not necessarily mean it preserves all layers, lets you edit every element, or exports a document that another Photoshop user can continue editing. Those are separate levels of compatibility.

Before moving a project, make a duplicate and test a representative file in both directions. Include a multi-layer composite, text using common fonts, adjustment layers, layer and clipping masks, Smart Objects and Smart Filters, vector shapes, layer effects, a 16-bit image, a CMYK document, a large PSB file, and linked or missing assets. Check what remains editable, what changes appearance, and what becomes flattened or unavailable. Current comparison coverage warns that complex documents may not survive a move between applications exactly; see Apps.deals’ comparison and Creative Bloq’s alternatives guide.

  • Keep the original PSD untouched.
  • Work on a copy in the alternative editor.
  • Export a flattened proof and compare its appearance with the original.
  • If the recipient uses Photoshop, reopen the exported PSD there and check the elements they need to edit.
  • Do not move a live client project until the actual handoff works.

Compare the period you expect to use an application, the features and services included, and whether you need a second tool for gaps. A one-time Mac editor, free desktop application, browser service, and Adobe subscription are different kinds of offer; their headline prices alone do not establish equivalent capabilities. Adobe’s broader Creative Cloud bundle is a separate comparison from Photoshop alone; see Adobe’s Creative Cloud pricing for its scope and current terms.

What alternatives may not replace

Photoshop can be hard to leave when a workflow depends on Adobe-specific plug-ins, Smart Objects, Adobe Fonts or Libraries, established agency practices, or particular Firefly features. AI tools also should not be compared by feature count alone: generative fill, object removal, subject selection, image expansion, noise reduction, and portrait retouching have different uses, and availability may depend on credits, a subscription, or a connection.

Before choosing based on AI, try the tasks that matter to you—such as selecting flyaway hair, removing an object against a detailed background, extending an image with perspective lines, or retouching a face—and check whether the tool meets your quality, privacy, and offline requirements. The available product descriptions do not establish a single AI winner across those tasks.

Before you cancel Photoshop

  1. Inventory dependencies. List the plug-ins, scripts, actions, fonts, libraries, templates, and cloud-stored assets your work actually uses.
  2. Sort files by risk. Identify documents that must stay editable in Photoshop, including complex PSDs, PSBs, print work, and client files.
  3. Test copies, not originals. Check fonts, profiles, masks, effects, linked assets, and exports in your proposed alternative.
  4. Reproduce AI-dependent jobs. Confirm that the replacement can achieve acceptable results for the particular tasks you perform, and check its processing and usage terms.
  5. Run a parallel period. Use the alternative for real, non-critical work for two weeks, then complete at least one representative project and handoff before ending the Adobe plan.
  6. Keep recovery options. Retain originals and exports, and confirm that you can retrieve the Adobe assets and source files you need before changing your account or storage setup.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Affinity by Canva as the first candidate for a broad desktop creative workflow, after confirming current free-tier terms and testing your PSDs.
  • Choose GIMP if open-source desktop editing and Linux support matter more than Photoshop-like conventions.
  • Choose Photopea for convenient browser-based PSD work when the file, device, and privacy requirements make that appropriate.
  • Choose Pixelmator Pro if you are committed to Mac or iPad and its purchase or bundle model fits your needs.
  • Choose Krita for painting and illustration rather than photo cataloguing.
  • Choose a photography-first application if RAW development and managing a shoot are the central jobs.

If your work depends on complex Adobe-centered handoffs, plug-ins, or features you cannot yet reproduce, staying with Photoshop is the lower-risk choice until a real project passes your migration test.
