You can make a fidget spinner with a 3D-printed body and a 608ZZ ball bearing, or build a simpler bearing-free version from cardboard, a straw, a toothpick and beads. The bearing build spins more like a conventional spinner but needs a correctly sized, secure fit; the cardboard version uses common craft materials and is easier to customize.
Choose the spinner that fits your materials

A conventional spinner has a center bearing and an outer body with weighted lobes. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes that basic construction in its fidget spinner guidance. Evenly spaced lobes and symmetric weight help the body rotate without excessive wobble.
Make a 3D-printed spinner with a bearing
Gather the parts and tools
- A 608ZZ radial ball bearing. TeachMe3DP gives an example steel bearing size of 8 mm × 22 mm × 7 mm; check the bearing’s stated dimensions and the spinner model before printing.
- A 3D printer and filament for the body.
- Flush cutters, paper towels, alcohol and bearing lubricant. Adafruit also lists a hobby knife or precision screwdriver among the tools for its project.
Adafruit says that most fidget spinners use a standard 608ZZ bearing to spin freely. Its parts and tools list is in the project overview.

Print a balanced body
- Choose a body design with a center opening intended for your bearing and evenly spaced outer lobes. Verify the model’s hole size against the bearing before printing.
- Slice the body and print it flat, following the settings for your specific printer, filament and model. There is no universal print time or setting: TeachMe3DP reports a 44-minute example on a Prusa MK3S using its tutorial settings, but different machines and settings change the result. - Check the printed center opening and the body for defects before assembly. Do not force a bearing into a body that is cracking.
Prepare and fit the bearing
- If you are following Adafruit’s shielded-bearing method, carefully remove the bearing cover, clean out grease with alcohol, and apply two to three drops of low-viscosity lubricant. Work carefully: the cover is small, and tools can slip. Adafruit’s assembly instructions show this method.
- Press the finger rests into the bearing, then press the bearing into the printed body’s center hole. The fit should hold the bearing in place without cracking the print.
- Spin-test the assembled spinner and look for wobble. Stop using it if the bearing, cover or any weight is loose or can detach.
Make a cardboard spinner without a bearing
Materials
- Cardboard, cut into a circle or custom shape about 6–8 cm across.
- A plastic straw to make a center sleeve.
- A toothpick or blunt skewer for the axle.
- Beads to act as spacers or pivots.
- Markers, stickers, glue or another cardboard layer for decoration and reinforcement.
DIY.org describes a cardboard spinner in this size range and suggests larger beads or pre-cut shapes for younger makers. Follow its fidget spinner activity for the craft approach.
Assemble and tune it
- Cut the cardboard to the shape you want. For steadier rotation, keep the lobes similar in size and distribute any added weight symmetrically.
- Push the straw through the center and trim it flush with the cardboard. It acts as a sleeve between the body and axle.
- Thread the toothpick or blunt skewer through the straw. Add beads as spacers or pivots, then trim or secure exposed ends so the axle cannot easily slip out.
- Decorate the body or glue on a second cardboard layer. Keep glue away from the pivot so it can still move.
- Spin it on a flat surface and observe wobble. If it wobbles, check whether the center hole is off-center, the cardboard is bent, or the weight is uneven; adjust the shape or weight and test again.

Safety before handing it to a child
- Keep spinners with small pieces away from children under 3. HealthyChildren.org relays CPSC warnings that plastic and metal spinners can contain choking hazards; children should not put them in their mouths or play near their faces. See HealthyChildren.org’s safety guidance.
- Supervise cutting, drilling, bearing-cover removal and any use of a hobby knife. Adafruit advises care and parental guidance for younger makers.
- Before play, inspect the spinner for loose bearings, covers, beads, weights or other detachable pieces. Do not give a damaged spinner to a child.
- If you plan to sell a finished spinner as a children’s product, check current CPSC requirements rather than assuming a homemade design is exempt. CPSC’s business FAQ addresses requirements including magnets, button or coin batteries, certification and children’s products. CPSC states that children’s toys are subject to 16 C.F.R. part 1250, which incorporates ASTM F963, in its fidget spinner guidance.
