“Road to California” is a name used for more than one quilt-block design, so there is no single set of measurements or layout to assume. One published pattern makes a 6-inch finished block from squares and triangle-square units; a separate tutorial presents an even nine-patch in 6-, 9-, and 12-inch finished sizes. Choose one version and follow its diagram and cutting instructions throughout.
What is the Road to California quilt block?
It is a quilt-block name associated with differing designs, rather than a reliably unique pattern specification. A quilting guild blog notes that it found multiple patterns under the name, and tutorials describe different constructions. Identify the publication or diagram before cutting fabric; do not combine one version’s layout with another’s measurements.
California State Parks also uses “Road to California” as a name for a block in a sampler with San Diego-related naming context. That is an example of the name’s use, not evidence of the block’s origin.

How to make the 6-inch American Patchwork & Quilting version
This version uses white, blue, and pink fabric and finishes at 6 inches square. The source’s cutting list is:
- White: two 2-7/8-inch squares, each cut diagonally to yield four triangles, and one 2-1/2-inch square.
- Blue: four 2-1/2-inch squares.
- Pink: two 2-7/8-inch squares, each cut diagonally to yield four triangles.
- Pair one white triangle with one pink triangle to make a triangle-square unit. Repeat until you have four units.
- Arrange the four units and the remaining squares in three rows, matching the source pattern diagram for exact placement.
- Sew the pieces into rows, then join the rows to complete the block. Follow the pattern’s pressing directions.

Choosing fabric and tools
Fabric is the essential material. Quilting cotton or suitable scraps can work; contrasting colors help make a diagonal arrangement easier to read. The two versions do not require identical fabric choices, so use the palette and cutting chart attached to the pattern you selected.

- Rotary cutting: Create Whimsy describes a rotary-cutting workflow, but a particular cutter or brand is not established as necessary.
- Coordinated sets: fabric-square bundles are one retailer’s presentation, not a requirement for making the block.
What is known about the name and history?
The American Quilter’s Society reported on July 11, 2017, that its pattern first appeared in The Quilt Life in April 2014. That date applies to the AQS-published pattern version; it does not establish when the block name was first used or identify a definitive historical original. The available sources do not establish who coined the name or that the geometry commemorates a particular migration.
