A Steiner doll—also commonly called a Waldorf doll—is a soft cloth doll with a firmly shaped wool head, a smooth cotton-knit skin, simple embroidered features and yarn or wool hair. To make one, start with a complete body pattern, build and cover the head, then sew and stuff the body and attach it securely. The head method below follows the cited doll-making instructions; body pieces and proportions vary by pattern.

Choose a pattern and gather materials
For a first doll, use a complete pattern that gives the finished height, body pieces, seam allowances and head-to-body proportions. Head instructions alone do not specify a universal body shape or limb placement. Decide whether your pattern includes clothing or requires a separate outfit.
- Head stuffing: unspun wool batting.
- Head foundation: tubular cotton gauze.
- Skin: flesh-tone cotton interlock or cotton jersey. The fabric needs enough stretch to pull smoothly over the head.
- Binding and sewing: strong cotton craft thread or dental floss for the neck; sewing thread and a hand-sewing needle for seams.
- Face and hair: embroidery floss and wool or cotton yarn. A long doll-making needle is useful for reaching through the head; one tutorial recommends a 5-inch needle.
- General tools: scissors, pins, paper and pencil. Clothing fabric and ribbon are optional, depending on the pattern.
A Waldorf-style doll curriculum also lists fabric, wool, cotton jersey, floss, yarn, needles, thread, scissors, paper and pencil among its materials (curriculum materials list).

Make and cover the head
1. Build the wool head
Cut a short length of tubular cotton gauze and securely stitch one end closed. Pull strips from the unspun wool batting and layer them perpendicular to one another into a tight ball. Put the wool into the gauze and compress it firmly. Knead the stuffing into an egg shape, then refine it into a pear: keep the head round and shape a narrower neck beneath it (head-shaping instructions).
2. Define the neck
Wrap strong thread around the narrow neck area repeatedly and tie it securely to hold the shape. One tutorial’s small sample head uses a neck circumference of 6¼–6½ inches; treat that as a check for that sample, not a universal measurement. Follow your pattern’s scale and proportions.

3. Pull on the cotton skin
Sew a rectangle of cotton interlock into a tube, placing the fabric’s greatest stretch across the width. Gather one end, pull the tube over the stuffed head, and close the crown. Smooth the knit down over the head and neck without twisting or bunching it. Bind the neck again, then stitch the lower edge closed (skin-covering instructions).

Keep the features simple
Lightly mark the eye and mouth positions before stitching. Use embroidery floss and small, restrained stitches; secure thread ends so they cannot loosen. Minimal features are part of the style, leaving room for imaginative play rather than giving the doll a highly specific expression. A Chicago Waldorf School handwork text describes an even simpler doll made from a folded napkin, with facial marks added in ink (Chicago Waldorf School handwork text).

Choose a hair method
Attach wool or cotton yarn to the covered head by sewing or knotting it, following the method suited to your pattern. A wig or cap, braids, or a simple yarn hairline are all possibilities; choose an attachment that is secure and appropriate for the intended child (doll-making tutorial).
Sew the body, attach the head and finish the doll
- Cut the pattern pieces: Transfer the chosen pattern’s body pieces to fabric and follow its stated seam allowances. Use its proportions rather than improvising limb placement.
- Sew and turn: Stitch the seams securely, leaving any opening the pattern specifies for turning or stuffing, then turn the pieces right-side out.
- Stuff the body: Fill it with wool or the filling recommended by the pattern, shaping the limbs and torso as you go.
- Attach the head: Position it at the neck and sew it on with strong, durable stitches.
- Add clothing: If desired, sew a removable outfit from washable fabric, using the pattern’s clothing instructions where provided.
- Inspect: Check seams, hair attachments and embroidered thread ends for security. Trim loose threads and avoid detachable small parts for very young children.
Body construction and clothing are pattern-dependent; the cited head instructions do not establish one universal body template. A full-body pattern or course is therefore the practical starting point for a beginner (course overview; pattern information).

What makes the head hold its shape?
- Firm, even wool packing: A tightly compressed head foundation provides the shape to refine by hand.
- Clear neck binding: Repeated, secure wraps define the narrow neck and help hold the head shape.
- Smooth, correctly oriented knit: Cotton interlock needs stretch across the width so it can cover the head without pulling awkwardly or gathering at the neck.
