A Wai Kru ceremony tray is a pedestal or flower tray used to present offerings as students pay respect and express gratitude to their teachers. There is no single universal arrangement: flowers and other offerings, and the way they are displayed, vary by institution and context.
What is a Wai Kru ceremony tray?
Wai Kru (พิธีไหว้ครู, Phithi Wai Khru) means paying respect to teachers. The ceremony expresses students’ respect, humility, gratitude, and commitment to learning, as Assumption University describes. A tray provides a presentation surface for offerings; the Thailand Foundation uses the term Phan Phoom for a flower tray.
The ceremony is commonly associated with a Thursday in June, according to the Thailand Foundation, but that is customary timing, not a fixed date. University examples include a ceremony in June 2023, one in July 2025, and another in September 2025.

Flowers are central to many presentations, alongside offerings such as popped rice, candles, and incense. The exact combination depends on the local or institutional practice.

- Ixora flowers (Dok Kem)
- Popped rice (Kao Tok)
- Candles and incense
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Culture Ways of Life and Wisdom – Part 1 lists these flowers and offerings. A Chiang Mai University nursing ceremony in 2023, for example, used a pedestal tray made with Ixora flowers, eggplant flowers, popped rice, and Bermuda grass. Walailak University’s 2026 account describes student-made trays decorated with flowers, candles, incense, and other traditional offerings.
What do the offerings symbolize?
The flowers and rice are associated with qualities students hope to develop through learning:
- Pea eggplant flowers (Dok Ma Kuea): respect and modesty.
- Bermuda grass (Yah Praek): patience and perseverance.
- Popped rice (Kao Tok): discipline and self-control.
- Ixora flowers (Dok Kem): sharp minds and intelligence.
The Thailand Foundation explains that plants’ ability to flourish and multiply symbolizes students’ ability and knowledge growing with teachers’ guidance. Its account calls Bermuda grass and eggplant flowers indispensable in the tradition it describes, while Ixora flowers and popped rice are optional but commonly used. That description should not be taken as a universal specification: documented university trays include varying combinations.

No. The sources show variation in both contents and presentation, and they do not establish one required tray design. An institution may shape the offerings around its own ceremony. The Wai Kru ceremony is also used in distinct settings, including Thai classical music and Muay Thai, so objects and practices should not be assumed to be interchangeable. A Mahidol University repository summary on Thai classical music ritual, for example, distinguishes the Khan Kamnol, a receptacle for offerings, from the offerings themselves.
