Art movements changed what watch designers considered beautiful, modern and practical. Art Deco brought bold geometry and decorative luxury to the wrist; Bauhaus-influenced design favored uncluttered dials, legibility and functional simplicity. The connection is historical influence, not proof that an art school designed a particular watch.

How to read an art movement in a watch

A watch can reflect an era through its case outline, dial hierarchy, materials and ornament. Those clues are useful, but a resemblance alone does not establish a designer’s intention or a direct connection to a movement. The strongest way to discuss influence is to pair visible design cues with a documented object, maker or designer.

  • Geometry and silhouette: Look for angular, rectangular or octagonal cases, and consider whether the outline is emphasized or restrained.
  • Dial and legibility: Notice the amount of ornament, the numeral and marker styles, the shape of the hands and what the dial makes easiest to read.
  • Purpose and production: Ask whether the design foregrounds decorative craft and luxury or favors everyday function and production.
  • Historical evidence: Separate a dated, attributed design from a later watch that merely shares its visual language.

Art Deco: strong geometry and decorative craft

Art Deco watch design paired geometric forms and bold lines with fine craftsmanship. The Metropolitan Museum of Art characterizes the movement more broadly by its “self-conscious elegance and ostentation,” a useful contrast with the functional simplicity associated with Bauhaus influence. These are broad tendencies, not rules that describe every watch of either period.

Documented examples at Audemars Piguet

The Audemars Piguet museum’s account of Art Deco documents an octagonal wristwatch from 1917 and an Art Deco jumping-hours watch from 1930. On the latter, vertical gadroons reinforce the rectangular openings for the hours and minutes. Together, the examples show how a watch’s case and display could make geometry part of its identity; they are examples from the brand’s collection, not a complete survey of Art Deco watches.

Bauhaus influence: clarity, restraint and everyday use

The Staatliches Bauhaus operated from 1919 to 1933. Its design aims favored rational objects for everyday life and approaches suited to mass production. In watch design, the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) describes a shift toward stripped-down dials, less decorative hands, simple cases, Arabic numerals and long, thin markers. The effect is not simply “plain”: it is a deliberate visual hierarchy in which the time is easier to find.

Influence is not the same as school authorship

Watches now described as Bauhaus-style appeared after the school closed. STOWA dates such simplified-dial watches to around 1937 and says Bauhaus-era influence is evident, while also crediting dial maker Arthur Weber and his collaborators with drawing on fashion, interiors, furniture and other everyday designs. STOWA’s history says Weber & Baral supplied dials to both Lange and STOWA. This is the maker’s account of its history, not independent archival research; it supports describing the watches as influenced by Bauhaus-era trends, not as products designed by the Bauhaus itself.

FHH identifies a Lange watch from 1937 as one of the first documented watches in the Bauhaus style. That date helps explain why the label refers to a design language and its later influence rather than a watch made by the school during its operation.

Max Bill and Junghans

A clearer designer connection is Max Bill, a Swiss artist and former Bauhaus student. According to FHH, Bill first designed a kitchen clock for Junghans in 1956 and a wristwatch for the company in 1961. The collaboration is a strong example of Bauhaus principles applied to watch design, rather than evidence that the school itself made watches.

FHH quotes Bill’s design ambition as: “Make watches that are as far removed as possible from any trend.” It also quotes his intention to create “watches that are timeless but don’t forget about time.” The tension in that idea—restraint without losing the watch’s purpose—helps explain why clarity is central to this design tradition.

Art Deco and Bauhaus compared

Design question Art Deco tendency Bauhaus-influenced tendency
Geometry and silhouette Strong angular forms and bold lines; Audemars Piguet documents an octagonal example from 1917. Simple cases and restrained forms, as described by FHH.
Dial and legibility Geometric display elements can reinforce the overall composition; the 1930 Audemars Piguet jumping-hours watch uses rectangular openings emphasized by vertical gadroons. Stripped-down dials, simplified hands, Arabic numerals and long, thin markers, as described by FHH.
Design priority Decorative elegance, bold presentation and fine craft. Clarity, functional simplicity and suitability for everyday use and production.
Historical relationship Object-level examples cited here are from the Audemars Piguet museum’s own collection and account. The Bauhaus closed in 1933; simplified-dial watches described as Bauhaus-style date from around 1937, according to STOWA.

The contrast is a reading tool, not a strict classification system. A watch can combine functional legibility with luxurious materials, or use geometry without being an Art Deco object. Dates and attribution matter as much as appearance.

What about Brutalism?

Brutalism is a useful comparison when discussing bold, uncompromising forms, but the historical evidence available here does not establish particular Brutalist watches, makers or dates. Treat “Brutalist” as a broad visual analogy unless a specific watch has stronger evidence connecting it to the movement. A heavy-looking case alone is not enough to establish that connection.

Sources and scope

The design-history contrast draws on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s overview of Art Deco and FHH’s account of Bauhaus and watch design. Object dates and descriptions for the 1917 and 1930 examples are from the Audemars Piguet museum. The post-school dating and Arthur Weber context come from STOWA’s company history; its account should be read as a maker’s historical account. FHH’s Bauhaus discussion is available at Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.
