In woodworking, tiger figure describes stripes that run across a board’s grain—not a wood species. WOOD Magazine attributes the pattern to compression in the wood. The stripes’ length and boldness vary, and the term can overlap with “curl.”
What is tiger figure?
WOOD Magazine defines tiger figure as “a compression figure of stripes lying across the grain of a board.” The visible pattern can vary in density and spacing from log to log. The magazine also says greater contrast between the wood’s soft and hard texture can make the figure appear more striking. These are descriptions of appearance, not evidence that a particular pattern predicts strength or stability.

Tiger figure and curl: how do the terms differ?
The terms are sometimes used interchangeably. As a visual distinction, WOOD Magazine describes tiger-striped boards as having longer, bolder stripes, while curl tends to appear as shorter, overlapping marks. Which woods can show tiger figure?
Tiger figure is not the name of one species. WOOD Magazine lists soft maple, big leaf maple, black walnut, koa, Tasmanian blackwood, and Swiss pear as examples of woods in which the figure occurs. Its examples illustrate that the pattern can appear in different species; they do not establish that every board of those woods will have it.
What do 1A to 4A figure ratings mean?
WOOD Magazine describes ratings from 1A through 4A, but calls the scale completely relative: one person’s 2A may be another person’s 4A. The labels are not an objective, consistently comparable standard. If you are assessing a board, look at the actual stripe length, boldness, spacing, and consistency instead of relying on a grade alone.

How is tiger-figured wood used?
WOOD Magazine describes tiger maple as a traditional choice for fine furniture and Kentucky (Pennsylvania) rifle stocks. It also gives musical instruments and jet airplane interiors as examples of applications for figured lumber, which may be used for an entire furniture piece or as a featured panel. These are examples cited by the magazine, not a survey of current market use.

Its article does not give tool settings, cutting parameters, or finishing instructions, so those choices depend on the specific wood and project. A suitable search phrase when looking for the material is “tiger maple lumber”; confirm the species and inspect photographs of the actual board rather than assuming a listing’s label guarantees a particular pattern.
