Intarsia is a name for two different crafts: woodworking that fits shaped pieces of wood into a decorative image, and knitting that creates separate color areas without carrying unused yarn across the back. If you are looking for a painting technique, neither meaning refers to painting; both produce an image through assembled materials.
What does intarsia mean?
The meaning depends on the craft. In woodworking, intarsia is a mosaic made from shaped wood pieces fitted together and glued to a wooden support. In knitting, it is colorwork that creates distinct areas of color in the knitted fabric without carrying the unused yarn across the back.
| Feature | Woodworking intarsia | Knitting intarsia |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Contrasting pieces of wood | Yarn worked into knitted fabric |
| How the image is made | Shaped pieces are fitted and glued to a support | Separate color areas are knitted into the fabric without carrying yarn across the back |
| Typical result | A decorative wood mosaic with shaped, fitted components | A knitted image or pattern |
| Tools and supplies | Depending on the project, a saw, sanding equipment, wood, and adhesive | The publisher’s description defines the technique but does not specify a complete supply list |
How woodworking intarsia differs from marquetry
Intarsia.com describes woodworking intarsia as shaped wood pieces fitted into a wooden support. It contrasts this with marquetry, which assembles veneer patterns on a carcass. The distinction is useful: intarsia’s fitted components are the focus, rather than a pattern assembled from veneer.
The specialist seller says the technique was used in fifteenth-century Italy and credits Judy Gale Roberts with helping renew public awareness of modern woodworking intarsia. These are the seller’s historical and revival accounts, rather than independently established conclusions.

What a beginner woodworking project can involve
Intarsia.com documents a seven-piece whale as a beginner project measuring 12½ by 4½ inches. Its listed materials and equipment show the kinds of work involved, but they apply to that particular pattern, not to every intarsia project.
Requirements for the documented whale
- A scroll saw or bandsaw, plus a contour sander
- Contrasting dark and white wood, each ¾ inch thick
- ⅛-inch backing or shim material
- Pattern copies and repositionable adhesive
- A ⅛-inch dowel and drill bit
- Woodworker’s glue
The guide also lists an air compressor, carving knife, and wood burner as handy extras. The project’s combination of cutting, contour sanding, fitting, and gluing gives a practical sense of the craft’s workflow.

Other documented patterns
The seller’s free-pattern page includes a beginner/intermediate “Cardinal on Pine Bough” pattern with 29 pieces and a beginner/intermediate “Oh Hoot” pattern with 33 pieces. Its “Intarsia Whale” pattern is listed as beginner level with seven pieces. A pattern’s level and piece count are specific to that design; they do not establish a universal difficulty scale.
What knitting intarsia is—and what it is not
Knitting intarsia makes separate colored areas in the knitted fabric, often to form a picture or pattern, without carrying unused yarn across the back. That construction distinguishes it from colorwork methods in which yarn is carried behind the stitches. The publisher’s definition establishes the central feature, but does not provide a full knitting tutorial or a prescriptive list of supplies.

A knitting guide with motifs and full patterns
Sian Brown’s Intarsia, published by The Crowood Press and presented on Simon & Schuster’s publisher page, is a practical guide that moves from basics and practice to original designs. The 2021 book description lists 20 charted motifs, five full knitting patterns, and more than 200 photographs, sketches, and charts. The publisher page gives October 8, 2021 as the publication date and 112 pages for the trade paperback; those details describe the book, not an independent assessment of its instruction.
The publisher identifies the trade paperback by ISBN 9781785009471. Retailer stock and prices can change, so check current listings if you are considering a copy.

Which kind of intarsia are you looking for?
- Choose woodworking intarsia if you mean an image assembled from shaped, fitted wood pieces.
- Choose knitting intarsia if you mean color blocks or images knitted into fabric without carrying yarn across the back.
- If you are searching for a painting method, clarify the medium: intarsia is a woodworking or knitting term in the definitions covered here, not a paint application technique.
