Kristi Linauer’s post is both a personal health update and a progress report on her front porch. She describes a relapse of a pinched-nerve issue affecting her shoulder, back and right arm, then explains how the porch ceiling was changed from flat to angled while she was temporarily unable to work. The account is personal, not a medical diagnosis, construction plan or product review.
The original post, “(I’m Hoping) You Can’t Keep A Good DIYer Down,” appears on Addicted 2 Decorating with an August 11, 2017 date and a January 14, 2019 date also displayed on the page: read the source post.

What the post is actually about
The headline sounds like a declaration of DIY determination, but the article is not a tutorial. It records a difficult week for Linauer and connects that interruption to a visible change on her home’s front porch. Her symptoms, the work sequence and the future project ideas all come from her own account. Nothing on the page establishes a clinical diagnosis, proves why the symptoms occurred or evaluates a treatment.
That distinction matters when reading an older personal blog post. A first-person description can explain what one homeowner experienced without showing that the same explanation applies to another person. Likewise, a photograph or description of a remodeling step does not substitute for structural drawings, local code review or a complete materials specification.

The health setback Linauer describes
A relapse that stopped most activity
Linauer says a pinched-nerve issue in her shoulder, back and right arm had returned. For about a week, she was largely still, with her arm propped up while she watched television and tried to sleep. She describes the pain as disruptive enough to make ordinary activity difficult.
She then reports two additional chiropractor visits, several massages, more rest and two nights of better sleep. At that point, she felt she might be improving. Those are events in her story, not evidence that chiropractic care, massage or rest will produce the same result for another person. The post supplies no examination, imaging, diagnosis from a clinician, treatment protocol or outcome measurement.
What readers should not infer
- The phrase “pinched nerve” is the author’s wording; the post does not establish the underlying condition or cause.
- Her temporary improvement does not demonstrate that any particular intervention is generally effective.
- Comments from readers, even when they describe similar experiences, are individual anecdotes rather than verified medical guidance.
- Someone with pain, weakness, numbness or tingling should seek advice from an appropriately qualified health professional rather than use this post as a treatment guide.
Linauer also says she was waiting until she could reach forward without her arm becoming weak, numb and tingly. That sentence explains why she paused certain projects; it is not a clearance to resume work and does not define a safe activity threshold for anyone else.
How the porch ceiling changed
From a low, flat plane to an angle
The home project in the post is the front-porch ceiling. Linauer disliked the existing low, flat appearance. Before new siding was installed, she says the horizontal framing—identified in her description as ceiling joists—was removed so the ceiling could be made angled.

She reports that the new angle rose roughly a foot above the door and window trim. In her subjective assessment, the porch felt more open and airy afterward. That is the visual result she experienced; the post does not provide measured room volume, a drawing, a framing schedule or an engineering explanation for the change.
Why the construction details remain incomplete
Removing horizontal framing can involve structural, weatherproofing and load-path questions, but this particular post does not answer them. It does not identify the framing sizes, attachment method, roof or porch loads, drainage approach, insulation, ceiling finish, permits or local requirements. It also does not say who performed each part of the work.
For that reason, the ceiling description should be read as a progress update, not as instructions to remove framing from another porch. A homeowner considering a similar alteration would need project-specific plans and an assessment by the appropriate building professional, along with confirmation of local permit and inspection requirements. Those safeguards are general planning principles, not specifications supplied by Linauer’s post.
Projects Linauer says she may do next
Stained wood over the concrete porch
Linauer says she was considering covering the concrete porch with stained wood. The wording is prospective: the post does not establish that the floor was installed, which wood species might be used, how the boards would be supported, how water would drain or what finish system would be selected.

Because no species, exposure conditions, preparation method or finish specification is given, the article cannot support a recommendation for a particular stain. An exterior wood-stain category is relevant to the idea, but linking a category does not mean Linauer chose, tested or endorsed a product. A useful materials decision would require the actual substrate, moisture exposure, traffic expectations, maintenance plan and local climate.
Another column and traditional-looking wraps
She also mentions adding another column and wrapping the columns to create a more traditional appearance. These are design intentions rather than completed work documented in this post. There are no dimensions, spacing plans, load details, wrap material, fastening method or finish schedule.

That missing information changes how the idea should be evaluated. A decorative wrap may alter appearance without serving as a structural post, while a new structural column requires a different level of design and verification. The post does not say which role the proposed additional column would have, so readers should not treat the concept as a build recipe.

Established in the account
- Linauer experienced a recurrence of an issue she called a pinched nerve and says it temporarily limited her activity.
- She describes resting with her arm supported, difficulty sleeping and later feeling some improvement after additional visits, massages and rest.
- The front porch ceiling was changed from a flat form to an angled one after horizontal framing was removed before siding work.
- She says the angled ceiling sat about a foot above the door and window trim and made the porch feel more open.
- She was considering a stained-wood porch surface, another column and column wraps.
- She intended to wait for cooler weather and for improved arm function before reaching forward for work.
Not established by the post
- A formal medical diagnosis, the cause of the symptoms or a generally effective treatment.
- Structural calculations, permits, code compliance or a complete method for altering a porch ceiling.
- The porch-floor wood species, stain, installation details or maintenance schedule.
- Whether the additional column or any column wrapping was ever built.
- The home’s present condition. The page is dated and does not document later changes.
How to use this story when planning your own porch work
Start with the condition you can document
Before selecting a finish or changing a ceiling, record dimensions, photographs, water paths, existing framing and the relationship of the porch to doors, windows and siding. Linauer’s post gives a visual description but not those measurements, so a reader cannot safely transfer its proportions to another home.
Separate appearance goals from structural work
“More open and airy” is an appearance goal. Angling a ceiling by removing framing is a structural intervention. Treat those as separate decisions: define the desired visual effect, then obtain project-specific advice about what framing can be altered and how the remaining loads and weather barriers will be handled.

Choose flooring and stain only after the substrate is known
A concrete porch covered with wood raises questions that the post does not resolve: drainage, clearance, ventilation, movement, fastening and moisture management. The stain decision follows those choices. Without the wood species and exposure details, a product label cannot be evaluated fairly, and no particular brand can be inferred from the article.
Plan around physical capacity, not a deadline
Linauer explicitly delayed forward-reaching work while she still experienced weakness, numbness and tingling. That is a personal account of pacing, not medical advice, but it highlights a practical planning point: porch projects can be postponed, divided into smaller tasks or assigned to help when a person cannot work comfortably or safely.

A dated snapshot, not a completion report
The source page carries two displayed dates—August 11, 2017 and January 14, 2019—yet the content remains a report of the stage described in the post. The later date does not turn the proposed floor, column or wraps into documented completions. Nor does it update the health account into a current diagnosis.
Readers looking for a finished porch specification will therefore find gaps by design: this entry captures an interruption and an in-progress exterior change. A later, dedicated project article would need actual measurements, selected materials, exposure conditions, construction photographs and a statement of what was ultimately completed before it could answer those questions.
The line that captures the post
Linauer closes with a hopeful sentence: “Here’s to hoping that a nerve issue can’t keep a good (and very determined) DIYer down for long.” — Kristi Linauer.
That sentence is the post’s central message. Determination is present, but so is restraint: she describes stopping when pain and altered sensation limited her, while the porch work continued in stages. The angled ceiling is a documented visual update; the stained floor and column treatments remain ideas in this particular account.
