Hong Kong International Airport’s giant cat installation was a temporary Easter attraction called “A Moment to Purr,” or “旅途上的「喵」” in the airport’s Chinese-language materials. The reclining ginger cat ran from April 3 through May 2, 2026. It was reported in Terminal 1’s Arrivals Hall A, Arrivals Level L5, measured approximately 8 metres long, 7 metres wide and 3.5 metres high, and used moving ears, a moving tail and a nearby interactive kiosk to create the feel of an oversized virtual pet.

As of August 12, 2026, the scheduled run is over. Visitors should not assume that the physical cat is still at the airport.

Airports are designed for movement: passengers land, collect bags, meet greeters and continue to their next destination. “A Moment to Purr” briefly interrupted that rhythm with a deliberately soft and playful image—a huge orange or ginger cat reclining in the arrivals area.

The installation turned an otherwise functional transport space into a temporary photo spot. Passengers could stop for selfies, watch the cat’s animated features and interact with it through a dedicated digital kiosk. The effect was less like encountering a conventional monument and more like finding a virtual pet enlarged to architectural scale.

That contrast was central to the attraction’s appeal. A sleeping cat suggests comfort, rest and domestic familiarity, while the airport represents fatigue, schedules and constant circulation. Placing the two together gave arriving passengers a short, whimsical pause before they left the terminal.

What was “A Moment to Purr”?

“A Moment to Purr” was the official English title of the Hong Kong International Airport installation. The Chinese-language title was “旅途上的「喵」”, which uses a cat-like “meow” sound in the context of a journey.

The centerpiece was a large reclining cat with a rounded, soft-looking form. Contemporary coverage reported that its ears and tail moved, adding a small amount of animation to an otherwise stationary sculpture. The movement helped the figure feel responsive without turning it into a fully mobile character or performance.

The airport described the concept as being inspired by a virtual pet. A nearby kiosk allowed visitors to interact with the cat through actions such as simulated feeding and petting. The cat then gave playful real-time responses, making the experience more participatory than a simple oversized photo prop.

Measurement Approximate size
Length 8 metres
Width 7 metres
Height 3.5 metres

Those proportions made the cat large enough to dominate the arrivals environment while remaining visually approachable. Its subject was familiar rather than heroic: not a dragon, aircraft or monumental abstract form, but a sleeping household animal rendered at a scale normally associated with public sculpture.

The installation’s visual language also mattered. The ginger colouring and reclining pose supported the impression of warmth and relaxation, while the moving ears and tail supplied just enough life to encourage people to keep watching. The result was a playful blend of sculpture, animation, digital interaction and airport wayfinding culture.

Where was the cat installed?

For the attraction’s documented April–May 2026 run, contemporaneous reporting and event listings placed it at:

Terminal 1, Arrivals Hall A, Arrivals Level L5, Hong Kong International Airport.

There is an important location discrepancy. The HKIA event page currently available to visitors lists the attraction under Terminal 2, Arrivals Level L5, in the non-restricted area, open 24 hours. That current listing does not match the event-era reporting for the temporary installation. The reason for the difference is not documented, so the Terminal 2 information should not be presented as the historical location without qualification.

When did the Hong Kong airport cat appear?

The public run was scheduled for April 3 to May 2, 2026, as part of Hong Kong International Airport’s Easter programming.

The installation should now be treated as a past temporary event. No reviewed source establishes that the sculpture was extended, relocated or preserved after May 2. The continued presence of an official webpage does not by itself show that the physical installation remains on display.

The wider HKIA Easter programme

“A Moment to Purr” was one part of a broader Easter programme rather than a standalone permanent airport feature. Associated programming reported around the same period included:

  • Spring Serenade: performances involving a local harmonica band and a pianist.
  • Bunny Bounce: appearances by rabbit-costumed entertainers.
  • Instant-photo activity: an event listing described a photo activity connected with the cat installation during the early-April holiday period.

These activities should be kept distinct from the cat itself. The harmonica and piano performances, rabbit entertainers and instant-photo activity were associated Easter programming; they were not structural or interactive components of the giant cat sculpture.

Why the installation worked as airport art

From a visual-art perspective, the attraction used scale to make an ordinary emotional experience visible. Many travellers arrive tired, distracted or in need of a brief pause. The cat’s sleeping pose translated that feeling into a simple public image: rest after a journey.

Its success also came from combining several kinds of participation:

  1. Immediate recognition: the silhouette and ginger colouring made the subject understandable at a glance.
  2. Photographic appeal: its unusual size created an obvious selfie and family-photo opportunity.
  3. Subtle motion: moving ears and a tail made the sculpture appear alive without requiring a continuous show.
  4. Digital interaction: the kiosk gave visitors an action to perform rather than asking them only to look.
  5. Emotional contrast: the calm cat softened the hurried atmosphere of an international arrivals hall.

In that sense, “A Moment to Purr” was not simply a large object placed in an airport. It was a short-lived environmental artwork designed around attention, touch-like digital play and the social ritual of taking photographs.

Can you still visit the giant cat?

Not on the evidence currently available. The documented public run ended on May 2, 2026, and no reviewed source confirms an extension or relocation. Travellers visiting Hong Kong International Airport after that date should not plan an itinerary around seeing the sculpture.

The official airport page may still be online, and its current metadata lists Terminal 2, Arrivals Level L5, but an online listing is not proof that the physical installation is still there. If HKIA publishes a new notice confirming a relocation, return or archive display, that would supersede the temporary-event information described here.

What the reports do not establish

Available reporting supports the cat’s title, dates, approximate dimensions, interaction method and event-era location. It does not establish that the installation was inflatable, identify a named manufacturing studio, confirm a sponsor, provide construction costs or visitor numbers, or document a commercial merchandise line.

It is also better to use the official title “A Moment to Purr” rather than the unofficial nickname “Catzilla,” which appeared in secondary coverage but was not the airport’s name for the attraction.
