The Morton Salt Girl is the umbrella-carrying child on Morton’s table-salt package. Morton officially calls her the Morton Salt Umbrella Girl, or the Morton Salt Girl for short. She debuted in 1914 to make one product advantage instantly visible: Morton’s salt could pour freely in damp weather.
What is the Morton Salt Girl’s name?
“Morton Salt Girl” is the familiar short name. Morton’s official materials use “Morton Salt Umbrella Girl.” Historical documents describe the character as eight years old, while the company’s current brand description calls her ageless. She is a fictional advertising figure, not a documented individual.

The umbrella and the open packet are a visual demonstration. Rain suggests humidity; the stream of salt shows that the product still pours instead of clumping. Morton says it began adding magnesium carbonate as an anti-caking agent in 1911. Its heritage account says calcium silicate later replaced that ingredient. See Morton’s FAQ and heritage timeline.
The image therefore does more than decorate the package: it turns a technical product claim into a scene that can be understood at a glance.

How the character was created
Morton’s first national consumer advertising campaign was developed with N.W. Ayer & Company. Morton’s account says Sterling Morton favored a proposed concept showing a girl with an umbrella, an open salt container and salt spilling behind her. The composition made the damp-weather benefit legible without a technical explanation. Morton recounts the development in “How a Little Girl Grew Up to Be an Icon.”
When did she first appear?
Morton says the mascot first appeared on its blue table-salt package in 1914. The company’s centennial announcement identifies an October 1914 appearance in Good Housekeeping. The United States Patent and Trademark Office likewise describes the logo as communicating that salt would pour from its patented spout in damp weather; its trademark history is summarized on the USPTO Trademark Trail.

Where did “When It Rains It Pours” come from?
The early advertising copy was “Even in rainy weather, it flows freely.” Morton considered shorter alternatives, including “Flows Freely,” “Runs Freely” and “Pours.” The proverb “It never rains but it pours” was also suggested, but the company says its negative tone led to the more positive slogan, “When It Rains It Pours.”
How many official Morton Salt Girls have there been?
Morton counts seven official versions, including the original. The updates reflect changing illustration styles while preserving the same umbrella, package and spilling-salt idea.
| Version | Year | What Morton records |
|---|---|---|
| Original | 1914 | Introduced on the table-salt package. |
| First update | 1921 | Her curly blonde hair changed to straight brown hair. |
| Second update | 1933 | Official redesign listed by Morton; specific visual changes are not stated in the cited summary. |
| Third update | 1941 | Official redesign listed by Morton; specific visual changes are not stated in the cited summary. |
| Fourth update | 1956 | Official redesign listed by Morton; specific visual changes are not stated in the cited summary. |
| Fifth update | 1968 | Official redesign listed by Morton; specific visual changes are not stated in the cited summary. |
| Centennial update | 2014 | Refreshed for the character’s 100th anniversary. |
Morton’s current FAQ supplies the seven-version count. The USPTO also notes that Morton periodically refreshed the girl’s appearance and that the logo’s latest update was in 2014.
Was the Morton Salt Girl modeled after a real child?
No. Morton says the original illustration was not modeled on a real child. The company notes that people have written asking who inspired her, but its historical account states that there was no real-life model. This answer applies to the original figure; later artists’ design decisions do not establish a separate identifiable person.

Why the illustration remains recognizable
The design combines a compact set of high-contrast actions: a yellow raincoat, an umbrella, a blue package and a bright trail of salt. Each element supports the same message. The raincoat and umbrella establish wet weather; the tilted container supplies movement; the falling salt supplies proof of flow. Because the character has been redrawn seven times without changing that basic action, the mascot can evolve stylistically while remaining identifiable.
Morton’s 2014 centennial announcement, dated January 23, 2014, quotes then-CEO Christian Herrmann calling her “more than just a symbol of our brand.” That is the company’s promotional characterization, not an independent measure of public opinion. The announcement is available at Morton’s centennial page.
