The A Thousand Quilted Cranes Project is artist Mike Floyd’s personal adaptation of the senbazuru crane tradition: instead of folding paper cranes, he stitched 1,000 quilt blocks, each featuring a crane, as a way to recognize people who had influenced his life. The physical blocks reached 1,000; the dedication list documented in the available accounts stopped at 722.
What is the A Thousand Quilted Cranes Project?
Mike Floyd began the project in February 2013. Inspired by senbazuru—the tradition or legend associated with folding 1,000 origami cranes—he chose quilted fabric as his medium. The project was a personal art and gratitude exercise, not a public charity or a commercial quilt pattern. Floyd set out to acknowledge people who had shaped his life, from family and friends to teachers, colleagues, and people he met in everyday situations.

How did the quilted cranes differ from origami senbazuru?
Floyd’s project was inspired by senbazuru, but it was his own quilting interpretation rather than a traditional paper-crane practice. In a paper senbazuru, the units are individually folded cranes; Floyd made stitched quilt blocks, each depicting a crane. The purpose he described was to name and remember people who had contributed to his life.

How many blocks did Mike Floyd make?
An American Patchwork & Quilting Editors profile, republished in 2021 from a Portland Tribune story, describes the project as 1,000 eight-inch-square blocks. Floyd planned to make one a day, keep the blocks distinct, and number and date them. The profile reports that he stitched the 1,000th block in April 2016. He sometimes repeated color combinations but avoided repeating the same fabric combinations. Read the profile.
Did he complete all 1,000 dedications?
No. The 1,000-block milestone and the dedication count were separate. Floyd’s project account says the dedication list had reached 722 when he paused. He explained that he had reached the present moment in his life and did not yet have enough perspective to decide whom to include or pass over, while indicating that he intended to continue. The 2021-republished profile also gives the list as 722 people. The accounts reviewed do not establish whether he later completed the list.

How did Floyd plan to display the blocks?
Floyd initially considered mailing one finished crane to each person. He abandoned that idea because sending a thousand items would be expensive and tracking down addresses would be difficult; instead, he documented dedications on the project blog and intended to keep the work together.
The profile estimates that turning 1,000 blocks into a conventional blanket would create a piece roughly 13 by 33 feet—too large for Floyd’s Portland apartment. It describes his alternative plan as stringing the blocks together in a flock-like arrangement, grouped by color and ordered chronologically by the people who influenced him. That is a reported plan, not confirmation that the final arrangement was assembled.
