ACO PowerDrain is a heavy-duty linear channel drainage system for paved infrastructure such as highways, airports, industrial yards, docks and logistics areas. It is not one globally uniform product: channel widths, grates, load classes and governing standards change by region. Select the exact local configuration from its current technical sheet, then have the drainage design and installation details checked for the pavement and traffic loading.

What is ACO PowerDrain?
PowerDrain is ACO’s name for a family of heavy-duty linear drains. The channel collects water along a line rather than at a single point, allowing designers to intercept runoff at pavement edges, across vehicle routes or around buildings and hardstands. ACO’s product descriptions identify a polymer-concrete channel body, cast-iron edge protection and a strengthened channel construction. The global overview also describes an integrated seal at channel joints and a 12 mm cast-iron edge rail.
The name covers regional product ranges rather than one specification sold everywhere. A German listing describes a 125 mm nominal-width channel with a 500 mm channel-body length, V-shaped internal profile, Powerlock safety locking, integrated damping and options for vertical or preformed pipe connections. That listing cites load classes A15 through F900 under DIN EN 1433 and DIN 19580. A Singapore range instead lists 100, 200 and 300 mm internal widths and references AS 3996 Load Class G. Those figures belong to their respective regional systems and must not be combined into a universal PowerDrain specification.

The title “ACO Polycrete” can also cause confusion. Current regional pages generally call the channel material polymer concrete. “Polycrete” should not be treated as a separate technical material or model unless the project’s local documents define it that way.
Where is PowerDrain used?
Regional ACO descriptions place PowerDrain in demanding paved environments where vehicles, concentrated wheel loads and frequent runoff make a light domestic channel unsuitable. Typical applications include:
- highways and other heavily trafficked roads;
- airport aprons, taxiways and service areas;
- industrial sites, manufacturing yards and loading areas;
- logistics yards and truck stops;
- docks, ports and other freight facilities;
- petrol stations and military bases; and
- ramps, tunnels and large hardstand areas in regional product offerings.
These are application categories, not automatic approvals. A channel suitable for an airport service road may be unsuitable for a particular crossing, pavement build-up or traffic pattern. The responsible designer must establish the actual wheel loads, traffic frequency, drainage area, rainfall assumptions, pavement structure and local code requirements before selecting a channel and grate.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich PowerDrain size and load class do you need?
Start with the project’s governing standard and site loading, not with a nominal width seen in an online listing. EN 1433 load classes and AS 3996 load classes are different classification systems. A product marked to one standard should not be assumed to have the same approval or component compatibility under the other.
Regional specifications are not interchangeable
| Regional source | Configuration stated | Standard or rating cited | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|---|
| ACO Germany product listing | 125 mm nominal width; 500 mm channel-body length; V-shaped profile; polymer-concrete body; cast-iron edge protection; vertical or preformed pipe connections | A15–F900 under DIN EN 1433/DIN 19580 | Use only for the exact German product and compatible grating combination shown in its current documentation. |
| ACO Singapore regional range | 100, 200 and 300 mm internal widths | Up to AS 3996 Load Class G | Verify the local AS 3996 declaration, grate and installation detail; do not map Class G directly to an EN 1433 class. |
| ACO Italy PowerDrain Concrete | C40/50 concrete channel body with a Z-profile cast-iron frame | EN 1433 conformity; W+R resistance; Plus ductile-iron grates at D400 and E600 in that line | Treat as a separate concrete variant, not evidence for the polymer-concrete PowerDrain channel. |
Choose width and depth from hydraulic calculations
Channel width is only one part of capacity. The designer needs the contributing paved area, rainfall intensity and runoff assumptions, channel depth, longitudinal slope, outlet spacing, outlet diameter and permissible water spread. The available material does not establish a universal PowerDrain flow rate, so a project should not be sized from a catalogue width alone. Request the hydraulic tables for the exact channel body, grate and outlet arrangement from the local ACO office or distributor.

Match the grate to traffic and access requirements
The grate is part of the rated system. Confirm its material, profile, locking arrangement and maintenance access with the channel body. ACO’s US heavy-duty category includes ADA-compliant grate options, but that statement does not establish that every such grate fits every PowerDrain size or regional range. For pedestrian areas, check slot dimensions and accessibility rules in the applicable jurisdiction. For roads, confirm that the selected grate’s rating, restraint and orientation match the expected wheel paths and traffic direction.
Account for pavement and environmental exposure
Specify the interface with asphalt, cast-in-place concrete or paving units before ordering. Bedding, surround concrete, joint sealing, edge restraint and transition details all change with the pavement build-up and load class. Chemical exposure, freeze-thaw cycles, de-icing salts and temperature changes also need to be checked against the local product documentation. Do not transfer material or exposure claims from one regional page to another without confirmation.
PowerDrain polymer concrete versus PowerDrain Concrete
ACO Italy describes “PowerDrain Concrete” as a distinct channel with a C40/50 concrete body and a Z-profile cast-iron frame. Its regional page lists EN 1433 conformity, W+R resistance and Plus ductile-iron grates in D400 and E600 ratings, with applications including highways, ramps, tunnels, logistics areas and industrial yards.
Those C40/50, D400 and E600 details belong to the concrete variant described by the Italian page. They are not specifications for the polymer-concrete channel listed by ACO Germany. When a drawing, bill of quantities or tender says “PowerDrain,” identify the body material, channel dimensions, grate series and governing standard explicitly so that the installer cannot substitute a visually similar but incompatible component.
How to specify PowerDrain for a project
- Define the site and traffic. Map every drainage line, crossing, turning area, loading bay and access route. Record axle or wheel loads, traffic frequency, braking and turning movements, and whether vehicles cross the channel at an angle.
- Identify the governing standard. Determine whether the project requires EN 1433/DIN 19580, AS 3996 or another local framework. Obtain the current declaration of performance and product certificate for the selected range.
- Calculate the hydraulic requirement. Establish catchment area, design rainfall, runoff coefficient, slope, outlet points and allowable surface water spread. Ask for the manufacturer’s hydraulic data for the exact width, depth, outlet and grate combination.
- Select the channel and grate as one system. Record the body material, nominal or internal width, channel length, load class, grate profile, locking method, edge rail and outlet type. Check that every component appears in the same regional technical documentation.
- Detail the pavement interface. Produce a section showing excavation, foundation or bedding, surround concrete, reinforcement where required, joint seal, finished surface levels and edge restraint. Use the manufacturer’s scheme for asphalt, concrete or block paving rather than copying a detail from another market.
- Resolve access and maintenance. Provide safe access to locking points, outlets and silt collection areas. Confirm how grates will be lifted, secured and replaced without damaging the pavement or channel edge.
- Obtain project approval. Have the drainage and structural details reviewed by the responsible civil or structural designer and the installer who will build the pavement. Keep the approved technical sheet, installation guide and declaration with the construction documents.
Installation: what the local guide must control
A generic “dig a trench and set the channel” procedure is not reliable for PowerDrain because the required surround and restraint depend on the selected load class and pavement. ACO’s Poland page, for example, publishes technical sheets, drawings, installation and operation instructions, material information and a declaration of performance, with separate schemes for concrete, bituminous and paved surfaces and for multiple load classes. Use the equivalent current documents for the country and product being installed.

Set-out and levels
Before excavation, set the channel line, invert, outlet locations and finished pavement levels. Check the fall and transitions at every junction. The grate must finish at the designed surface level; a proud grate can be struck by vehicles or create a trip, while a low grate can leave standing water around the edge.
Recommended Free Tools
Foundation, surround and edge restraint
Construct the specified foundation and side surround for the selected class and pavement. The channel, edge rail and adjacent pavement must act together under traffic. Follow the reinforcement, concrete strength, joint and curing requirements in the local detail rather than assuming that a domestic trench-drain practice is adequate for a heavy-duty installation.
Joints, outlets and connections
Use the integrated joint seal or the specified sealing method at every channel connection. Confirm whether the run uses vertical or preformed pipe connections and install the correct outlet parts. Protect open channels and outlets from construction debris, then flush and inspect the line before commissioning.
Traffic crossings and special limitations
ACO’s 2021 installation advice shows an asphalt detail carrying this warning: “Not for lateral crossing on high frequent roads, in housing estates or in front of railway crossings!” The warning applies to the particular detail illustrated in that document; it is not a blanket prohibition on every PowerDrain configuration. Check the current regional guide whenever traffic crosses the channel laterally, especially on frequent-load routes or near rail infrastructure.

Routine inspection
Inspect grates, locks, edge rails, joints and outlets at intervals set by the site operator and local conditions. Remove sediment, leaves, aggregate and spilled material before they reduce the inlet area. Industrial and freight sites may need more frequent cleaning because tire debris and cargo residue can enter the slots.

Standing water after rain
- Check whether the grate is blocked by sediment or surface debris.
- Inspect the outlet, downstream pipe and silt collection point for blockage.
- Confirm that the installed invert and longitudinal fall match the approved drawing.
- Have the designer reassess the catchment and rainfall assumptions if water remains after a clean, unobstructed system is verified.
Loose, rocking or damaged grates
Close the affected lane if a grate moves under traffic. Check the locking mechanism, frame seating, edge restraint and surrounding pavement for settlement or cracking. Replace only with the compatible grate and fastening parts specified for that channel and load class; a grate with a similar appearance may not carry the same rating.
Cracked pavement beside the channel
Cracking can indicate inadequate surround, movement at a pavement transition, water ingress or loads that exceed the selected detail. Document the crack pattern and traffic conditions, then have the installer and responsible designer inspect the section before patching. A cosmetic seal alone may conceal a structural or drainage problem.
What is established—and what must be verified locally?
Manufacturer pages establish that PowerDrain is a heavy-duty linear drainage family with polymer-concrete offerings, cast-iron edge protection and regional configurations for demanding paved sites. They do not establish one universal width, flow capacity, load rating, price, stock position or compatible SKU for every country. Current local technical sheets, installation instructions, declarations of performance and distributor information are required for procurement.
For a tender or construction package, write the full designation rather than only “ACO PowerDrain”: include the regional product name, body material, channel width and depth, grate, load class and governing standard, outlet arrangement and installation detail reference. That level of identification prevents a polymer-concrete channel from being confused with PowerDrain Concrete and prevents a rating from one market being applied to another.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ACO PowerDrain suitable for a driveway or home garage?
It may be technically suitable in some situations, but PowerDrain is intended primarily for heavy-duty paved environments. A residential driveway still requires a channel, grate and installation detail rated for its actual vehicle loads and pavement. Use the local technical documentation rather than assuming that an infrastructure specification is necessary or appropriate.
Can I use the German 125 mm PowerDrain specification in another country?
Not automatically. The 125 mm, A15–F900 and DIN EN 1433/DIN 19580 figures describe the cited German product. Other regional ranges use different dimensions and standards, such as the Singapore products rated under AS 3996. Confirm the local declaration and compatible components.
What is the difference between PowerDrain and PowerDrain Concrete?
PowerDrain generally refers to polymer-concrete channel offerings in the cited regional material, while PowerDrain Concrete is a separate Italian variant with a C40/50 concrete body and Z-profile cast-iron frame. Its D400 and E600 grate details should not be transferred to the polymer-concrete line.
Does a higher load class solve an undersized drainage design?
No. Load class addresses structural loading on the channel and grate. Hydraulic capacity depends on width, depth, slope, outlets, contributing area and design rainfall. Both structural and hydraulic requirements must be checked for the selected configuration.
