Why the workshop context changes the answer
“Parts storage” can mean two very different jobs. When ordinary workshop bins are the sensible choice
For a painter’s own workshop, search terms such as small parts organizer bins describe the general product category: stackable or wall-mounted containers for fasteners, fittings and other small components. This is a useful way to organise a normal workspace, especially when every container has a durable label and a defined restocking point.

Plan bins around the work sequence
- Keep daily-use items at arm’s reach: replacement spray tips, masking accessories, mixing sticks, abrasives and fasteners.
- Group parts by task or tool rather than by the date purchased. A “spray gun service” group is easier to use than several boxes of mixed fittings.
- Use one label format throughout the room: part name, size or thread, compatible tool and minimum reorder quantity.
- Separate clean replacement parts from used or contaminated components. A closed container is preferable where dust, solvent or overspray could damage contents.
- Reserve a clearly marked quarantine box for unidentified parts so they do not return to usable stock by mistake.
Check the practical fit
Measure the wall, bench or cabinet opening before buying containers. Record the available width, height, depth and clearance for doors, drawers and walking routes. Then measure the largest item that must fit, including its packaging. Prepare a written brief
- Identify the site and users. State whether the location is correctional, military, government or another high-security environment, and list the staff or contractors who need access.
- Describe the inventory. Provide a representative parts list, dimensions, weights, quantities, packaging and any hazardous, sharp or contamination-sensitive items.
- Define access rules. Explain whether compartments need individual locks, supervised access, a key system, electronic control or another site-approved method. The available pages do not state which mechanisms Actisafe supplies.
- Document the room. Supply a plan or measured sketch showing walls, doors, services, escape routes, benches, vehicles and any restricted zones. Include the required clearances for loading and cleaning.

- Is the proposal a standard item, a modified catalogue item or a fully custom installation?
- What are the external and internal dimensions of each bay, shelf or compartment?
- What is the safe working load per shelf and for the complete unit, and how was it determined?
- How is the unit fixed to the building, and what substrate and fixing schedule are required?
- Which access-control options are available, and how are lost keys, code changes or electronic failures handled?
- Can staff see labels and inventory without opening every compartment?
- What surfaces tolerate the site’s cleaning chemicals and inspection routine?
- How are sharp, heavy, loose or potentially hazardous parts segregated?
- What inspection, lubrication and replacement schedule applies to locks, hinges, runners and fixings?
- Which documents demonstrate compliance with the facility’s security, fire, accessibility and occupational-safety rules?
- What happens if the required quantity, room dimensions or security classification changes later?
These questions turn a broad shelving request into a scope that can be checked by facilities, security, procurement and workshop supervisors before money is committed.
Designing visibility without giving up control
Parts must be findable, but visibility can conflict with security. In an open workshop, transparent bins and front labels reduce search time. In a controlled environment, a visible label may be acceptable while the component itself remains behind a locked door or drawer. Ask for a layout that shows the labelling method, compartment numbering and audit process instead of choosing between “open” and “locked” as if they were the only options.
Use a location code that survives staff changes. Common mistakes and how to correct them
Assuming the category name is a product specification
A Shelving & Storage heading confirms a category, not a model. Correct the mistake by requesting a current catalogue page or project drawing that names the exact item and its specifications.

Actisafe and Actiwork are different businesses. Actiwork’s workshop-storage material can illustrate the ordinary small-parts category, but it cannot prove what Actisafe manufactures or supplies. Keep names, links and claims separate.
Buying by photograph
Photographs rarely establish load capacity, corrosion resistance, lock performance or fixing requirements. Require written values and installation details for every characteristic that affects safety or compliance.
Ignoring the room after the cabinet arrives
An apparently suitable unit can block a door, reduce a required aisle or interfere with cleaning equipment. Approve the measured layout, service clearances and anchoring plan before delivery.

Putting unidentified stock into labelled locations
Mislabelled parts create maintenance and safety risks. Use a quarantine location, identify the part with the responsible technician, and only then assign it a permanent bin or compartment.

A practical decision checklist
- Private or ordinary trade workshop: start with measured modular bins or cabinetry, consistent labels and a replenishment routine.
- Workshop inside a secure institution: write the security and facilities brief first, then ask Actisafe whether its Shelving & Storage offering can be tailored to it.
- Unclear setting: do not buy on the word “secure.” Define the threat, authorised users, inspection regime and required evidence.
- No published specification: record the item as “to be confirmed,” not as a model with assumed capacity or certification.
- Need a budget: obtain a formal quotation with delivery and installation separated, because no public Actisafe price is established.
What can and cannot be concluded
