You can download a solid Adirondack chair plan for a weekend project, but the right choice depends on more than a picture. Lumber sizes, seat dimensions, templates, tools, file format and finishing instructions vary substantially. The documented options below cover eight distinct plan sources; the available material does not substantiate eleven tested, separate plans, so this guide does not pad the list with duplicates or unverified designs.

Use the comparison table to shortlist a design, then check its own cut list before buying wood. A chair that uses cedar and pocket-hole screws is not automatically compatible with a plan drawn for treated decking boards or a child-sized frame.

How to choose before you download

Match the chair to its user

Exmark’s material includes separate adult and child chair plans, while the other listings describe a standard adult chair unless their page says otherwise. Check seat width, seat height and overall footprint against the person who will use it and the space where it will sit. Do not scale a child plan informally; use the dimensions and cut list supplied for that version.

Check the lumber and fasteners, not just the silhouette

Kreg specifies cedar boards together with pocket-hole screws, exterior screws, nails and glue. Exmark’s adult list uses 2×4, 1×4 and 1×6 boards, exterior screws, stain, clear coat and spar varnish. PatriotDIY is built around treated decking boards. Those material systems are not interchangeable without recalculating thicknesses, screw lengths and joint locations.

Audit the tool list

A plan marked “moderate” can still require several machines. Kreg lists a pocket-hole jig, crosscut station, drill, jigsaw, miter saw and tape measure. Exmark lists table, circular and miter saws, a jigsaw, drill, hole saw, countersink bits, measuring tape and sanding supplies. TheDIYPlan lists a tape measure, drill, miter saw, table saw, nail gun, Kreg jig and jigsaw. If you lack one of the saws, choose a plan whose cut strategy you can complete safely rather than assuming a substitute will preserve every angle.

Decide whether you need templates or digital fabrication files

Some plans rely on drawn dimensions; others add full-size templates, SVG files or 3D views. Spencley Design Co specifically describes a 29-page PDF with SVG files, printable templates, 3D drawings and cut diagrams. Templates can reduce layout work for the curved arms and back slats, but they do not remove the need to verify scale when printing.

Plan-by-plan details

Kreg Tool: a documented pocket-hole build

Kreg’s free plan is labeled moderate and is unusually explicit about both materials and equipment. The stated materials are cedar boards, pocket-hole screws, exterior screws, nails and glue. Its cut list is the shopping-control document: use it to determine board lengths and quantities instead of estimating from the finished photograph.

The tool list includes a pocket-hole jig, crosscut station, drill, jigsaw, miter saw and tape measure. That combination suits a shop that can make repeatable crosscuts and cut the curved side profiles with a jigsaw. Print or keep the plan open while marking each part, and label pieces as you cut so left and right components do not get swapped.

For an outdoor painted chair, let the glue and joints cure according to the product instructions, ease sharp edges with sanding, and apply an exterior-rated primer and topcoat only after the surface is clean and dry. The plan specifies construction materials; your coating system should be selected for the wood and exposure at your location.

Exmark Backyard Life: adult and child versions with video

Exmark provides downloadable adult and child chair plans, a cut list, build steps and a companion project video. The linked PDF contains the adult and child cut lists, so confirm which column or section applies before cutting.

The adult materials list names 2×4, 1×4 and 1×6 boards, exterior screws, stain, clear coat and spar varnish. The equipment list is broad: table, circular and miter saws, jigsaw, drill, hole saw, countersink bits, measuring tape and sanding supplies. Plan dust collection and a stable work surface before starting; the number of operations makes setup a meaningful part of the weekend.

  • Easy To Follow Instructions: The wooden Adirondack chairs for adults plan includes step-by-step instructions to walk you through the entire construction process. For bandsawing to the line, or to make your own hardboard templates, choose the cardboard template option
  • Template Pattern Included: Our workshop accessories retained the same easy-to-build qualities of the classic Adirondack chair, but designed the frame and armrests for even better durability. This unfinished Adirondack chair is proudly made in the USA!
  • Material List Included: Cardboard templates

Exmark presents the project as a weekend build, not a guaranteed duration. Video can help clarify the order of operations, while the PDF remains the authority for dimensions and quantities. If you build the child version, keep its parts segregated from the adult cut list to avoid mixing dimensions.

TheDIYPlan: web instructions plus an optional printable file

TheDIYPlan embeds its instructions on the web page and offers an optional paid printable PDF. The tutorial description includes cut diagrams, a supplies list and 3D illustrations, which can be useful when a flat drawing does not make the arm or back angle obvious.

Its listed tools are a tape measure, drill, miter saw, table saw, nail gun, Kreg jig and jigsaw. The page states a five-hour build time and $60 cost; both are publisher estimates surfaced in 2026, not independently verified results or guaranteed current prices. Lumber grade, local prices, setup time, paint and drying time can move the total substantially.

If you work from the free web version, keep the browser page available at the bench and verify every dimension against the latest diagram. If you buy the PDF, confirm that it is the printable format you want before checkout.

Heritage Supply: a straightforward paid PDF

Heritage Supply describes its paid downloadable PDF as containing a materials list, cut list and step-by-step instructions, using common home-store lumber and basic power tools. The listing is aimed at an average DIYer, but “basic” does not specify a particular saw or jig; read the current file description for the exact equipment before committing.

Because the plan is digital, download and back it up before taking wood to the saw. Verify the current price and file access on the product page. Treat the cut list as the controlling document when a product photograph appears to show a different board thickness.

Woodshop Diaries: printable plan with illustrated guidance

Woodshop Diaries sells a printable digital plan. The seller says its plans include cut and materials lists, illustrated steps and often a companion video. That combination helps when you need both a concise shopping list and visual guidance for the sequence of assembly.

“Often” means a video is not established for every listing, so check the Adirondack product page for the version you are buying. Print only after confirming the page size and scale; a template or diagram printed to “fit” can change dimensions.

Spencley Design Co: the file-heavy option

Spencley Design Co describes a 29-page PDF with SVG files, printable templates, 3D drawings and cut diagrams. Approximate finished dimensions are around 36 inches in each direction, according to the listing. Those dimensions are a planning guide, not a substitute for the individual part measurements.

This is the strongest fit for a maker who wants reusable templates or CNC-oriented files. Before purchase, check whether your printer, design software or CNC workflow can open the supplied formats. For a hand-tool build, the PDF drawings and cut diagrams may be sufficient, but the SVG extras do not replace safe saw setup or physical test-fitting.

PatriotDIY: treated-decking-board construction

PatriotDIY’s paid PDF uses treated decking boards and lists templates, cut sheets and assembly guidance. The listing also gives approximate dimensions and a higher stated seat height than a typical low-slung Adirondack profile. Because treated decking has its own moisture and coating considerations, follow the plan’s material specification rather than substituting interior boards.

Allow treated lumber to reach the moisture condition recommended by your coating manufacturer before painting. Use only fasteners and finishes labeled for the wood treatment and outdoor exposure. The plan’s templates can speed up curved-part layout, but compare the printed template against the stated scale before tracing.

Top DIY Plans: free PDF with unresolved design questions

Top DIY Plans describes a free PDF with illustrated assembly, a cut list and approximate dimensions of 33 by 34 by 39 inches. The page excerpt does not establish whether the design folds or rocks, nor does it establish that the design has been independently built and tested. Do not buy hinges, runners or specialty hardware on the assumption that those features exist.

Download the file, inspect every page and confirm the dimensions before purchasing lumber. If the PDF lacks a clear hardware schedule or full-scale template, make a paper or scrap-wood mock-up of the side profile first; that inexpensive check can reveal an angle or seat-height issue before you cut the final boards.

A practical weekend workflow

  1. Select one plan and freeze the version. Record the publisher, download date and whether you are building the adult or child variant. Do not combine dimensions from different plans.
  2. Print and audit the drawings. Ensure templates print at 100 percent, identify the units, and measure a known reference line on the page.
  3. Build a plan-specific shopping list. Copy the exact board sizes, fasteners, glue and finish named by that plan. Add sandpaper and masking supplies only after checking what the instructions assume.
  4. Prepare the shop. Set up a stable cutting surface, charged drill batteries, a sharp jigsaw blade, eye and hearing protection, and a way to support long boards. Keep the cut list visible.
  5. Cut and label parts in batches. Mark left/right orientation and keep adult and child parts in separate piles. Dry-fit the side assemblies before drilling final holes.
  6. Ease, sand and test-fit. Remove splinters and sharp corners, then assemble without finish to verify seat slats, arms and back slats align.
  7. Protect the chair for its environment. Use the plan-specified exterior screws and select an exterior primer, paint, stain or clear system compatible with the wood. Coat all accessible faces and allow the finish to cure before placing the chair outdoors.

Common failure points and fixes

  • Parts do not align: recheck board thickness and template scale; a plan for nominal 1-inch stock may assume a different actual thickness than your lumber.
  • Curves are mirrored incorrectly: mark a face side and make a left/right tracing pair before cutting the second piece.
  • Screws split the ends: use the pilot-hole, countersink and edge-distance guidance in the selected plan rather than copying a hole location from another design.
  • Paint peels quickly: remove mill glaze, dust and contaminants, let damp wood dry, and use a coating system rated for exterior wood and the specific lumber treatment.
  • The weekend runs long: publisher time claims assume a particular skill level, tool setup and finish schedule. Count layout, sanding, drying and cleanup as real project time.

What to verify on the listing before you buy

  • Adult, child or other size, with complete dimensions and units.
  • Board species or nominal sizes, quantities and moisture or treatment requirements.
  • Fastener type, screw length, glue and any pocket-hole or countersink operations.
  • Whether the download is free, paid, PDF, SVG, printable template or video-supported.
  • Current price, file-delivery method and page scale for printing.
  • Whether claims about folding, rocking or testing are actually documented by the publisher.

The Bottom Line

Choose the plan whose dimensions, lumber and tool list match your shop before you buy materials. Kreg and Exmark provide the clearest documented construction lists; TheDIYPlan adds a printable option and stated estimates; Spencley Design Co supplies the most extensive template files; PatriotDIY changes the material baseline with treated decking. Whichever design you select, follow one plan’s cut list from start to finish and treat time and cost figures as estimates.
