Adobe Express now lets eligible users describe many design changes in plain language instead of hunting through menus. Its AI Assistant can adjust layouts, change fonts and colors, replace assets, restyle images, and perform some video and audio edits. The important qualification: it remains a limited, desktop-only beta, and it is a prompt-driven editing tool—not a fully conversational designer.
What Adobe Express AI Assistant does
AI Assistant is built into Adobe Express to help create designs and modify existing ones. Adobe says it can interpret the design elements on a page and act on specific objects, layers, or multiple assets while leaving other parts of the composition in place.
That makes it different from a simple text-to-image generator. You can start with an existing social graphic, flyer, or image and ask for a targeted change, such as replacing a background, changing the headline font, or reorganizing a layout.

Adobe introduced the feature at Adobe MAX on October 28, 2025. Its current documentation still labels AI Assistant as beta, so the interface, availability, and supported actions may change.

Adobe’s overview of AI Assistant lists Firefly and partner models among the systems it may use. The Assistant automatically selects the model; users cannot manually choose one inside the feature.
What you can ask it to change
Layout and composition
Try prompts such as:
- “Fix the layout while keeping all existing text and images.”
- “Align the product image and headline vertically.”
- “Make the spacing between these elements more consistent.”
Adobe specifically describes layout fixes and edits to individual elements, layers, and multiple assets. Results should still be checked manually, particularly where exact alignment matters.
Fonts and typography
- “Use a bold sans-serif font for the headline.”
- “Make the headline larger and easier to read.”
- “Change the text color to dark green, but keep the wording unchanged.”
For brand work, state what must remain unchanged. If the typeface, line breaks, or spacing is critical, inspect the result at the final export size and make the last adjustments manually.

- “Change the palette to warm autumn colors.”
- “Make the background more minimal.”
- “Apply a modern, high-contrast style while preserving the logo.”
- “Use my brand colors and do not change the headline.”
Adobe positions the Assistant as using design knowledge involving composition, color harmonization, and font selection. That does not guarantee perfect brand consistency, so compare the output with your approved colors and assets.
Replacing or adding assets
- “Replace the gray blazer with a red jacket.”
- “Replace the background with a studio setting.”
- “Add a coffee cup beside the laptop.”
- “Add my logo to the top-right corner and keep its proportions unchanged.”
You can also ask it to replace an image with a non-premium stock asset. Adobe’s recent Express release notes describe newer support for adding and replacing brand assets, including fonts, colors, logos, and graphics.

AI Assistant can be used for image transformations and restyling. Example prompts include:

- “Create a studio-style product photo.”
- “Restyle this image as a watercolor illustration.”
- “Give this image a gel-lighting look.”
- “Keep the product unchanged but replace the environment.”
Use preservation language when the subject must remain recognizable: “Change only the background. Preserve the product’s shape, color, logo, and dimensions.”
Video and audio adjustments
Adobe’s release notes list prompt-based adjustments for some single-scene video and audio properties, including trimming, muting, playback speed, volume, audio fades, and media timing. This is not evidence that AI Assistant can replace a full multitrack video editor or reliably manage a complex production.
Text inside images
Release notes also describe replacing text in images, such as a headline or sign. This differs from changing an editable text box in an Express design. Generated or transformed text can contain spelling, spacing, or letterform errors, so zoom in and proofread it before publishing.
How to try Adobe Express AI Assistant
- Open Adobe Express in a desktop browser.
- From the Adobe Express homepage, select or enable AI Assistant Beta.
- Choose Make a design or Edit image.
- Describe the change in the prompt box, or choose an inline suggestion.
- Review the proposed result and select it, or let the Assistant apply the action when that option is offered.
- Refine the result with another prompt, then use Express’s normal editing controls for cleanup.
For the documented Edit image starting point, Adobe says uploaded images can be up to 20 MB. The Assistant may show inline results for you to choose from, or apply an edit directly and display a confirmation. Its More options menu can provide access to generative-credit information, current-session prompt history, feedback, help, guidelines, and legal terms.
How to write prompts that produce more controllable edits
Broad instructions such as “Make this better” leave too much unspecified. A stronger prompt identifies the target, the requested change, and the elements that must stay untouched:
“Change only the background to a pale blue studio wall. Keep the product, logo, headline, current dimensions, and layout unchanged.”

For predictable work, separate structural and generative changes:
- “Change the headline font to a bold sans serif.”
- “Move the headline 20 pixels lower.”
- “Replace the background with a soft beige texture.”
- “Align the product image and headline vertically.”
Useful constraints include:
- “Keep all existing text unchanged.”
- “Do not change the logo.”
- “Change only the selected image.”
- “Preserve the current aspect ratio.”
- “Do not add extra text.”
Separating requests is practical workflow advice rather than a guarantee from Adobe. It makes it easier to identify which instruction caused an unwanted result and to undo only the problematic change.
What AI Assistant cannot do
It is not a persistent chatbot
Adobe’s FAQ says AI Assistant does not engage in back-and-forth dialogue and does not retain memory of past projects or user preferences. You can issue design commands, but you should not expect an ongoing creative conversation that remembers your brand or previous work.
It does not support every Express feature
If a request is unsupported, Adobe says the Assistant displays a notification and allows you to rephrase it. Break a complicated request into a specific design action, identify the object or image involved, and use the normal Express editor if the feature still is not available.
It does not remove the need for review
AI Assistant can be faster than manual editing, but it may alter more than you intended, introduce poor spacing, change branding, crop an image unexpectedly, or render text incorrectly. Use the Assistant for a first pass, then check alignment, contrast, typography, logos, image crops, spelling, and the final export dimensions.
It is not a replacement for professional production tools
Pixel-perfect art direction, detailed vector work, advanced retouching, precise production typography, complex multi-page systems, and dependable batch automation remain better suited to dedicated workflows. Photoshop is a stronger fit when you need detailed image control rather than quick Express edits.

Who can access it?
As of August 18, 2026, Adobe’s documentation says AI Assistant is available on desktop to eligible users with personal Adobe Express Free or paid individual access. Availability is limited and gradually rolled out.

Adobe’s current documentation excludes Teams, Enterprise, and Education accounts from the main beta access path. Adobe is developing separate business and enterprise capabilities, but those should not be confused with access to this consumer beta.
Adobe lists support for English, French, German, Japanese, Hindi, and Brazilian Portuguese. It says the feature is available worldwide except for China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Crimea, and the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
If the AI Assistant option is missing
- Open Express on a desktop browser rather than the mobile app.
- Check that you are signed in with a personal account.
- Return to the Adobe Express homepage.
- Look for AI Assistant Beta.
- If the page says coming soon, your account may not yet have access or beta capacity may be temporarily unavailable.
Paying for Express does not guarantee immediate beta access.

Free users can try AI Assistant, but Adobe says free accounts receive a limited daily allotment of free generations. Not every Assistant action consumes that allotment: Adobe lists prompting, layout changes, color adjustments, replacing images, choosing fonts, non-premium asset searches, manual edits, modifying existing images, text effects, and animations among actions that do not consume free daily generations.

Generative operations can use the available allowance. Adobe’s pricing page currently displays a paid individual offer labeled Acrobat Express at US$10.99 per month and says it includes Adobe Express Premium, with 250 monthly generative credits. This naming differs from Adobe support pages that refer to Adobe Express Free and Premium, so check the live pricing page and billing terms before subscribing.

A paid plan may make sense if you regularly hit daily limits, need premium assets or Resize, or want the broader Premium feature set. It is not a reason to subscribe solely for guaranteed AI Assistant access.
Adobe says generative-AI outputs are generally commercially usable, but its pricing information also warns that a beta feature may be designated for personal use. Do not assume every AI Assistant result has unrestricted commercial clearance; check Adobe’s current terms for the feature and review any third-party assets or generated content used in paid work.
Is AI Assistant useful?

The central trade-off is speed versus precision. Prompting can be quicker than navigating controls, while manual editing remains more predictable for exact production work. There is also a model-transparency trade-off: Adobe automatically chooses among the models available to the Assistant, so you cannot select one for a particular result.

The wrong part of the design changes
Undo the result, select the relevant object, and narrow the prompt: “Change only the selected background. Preserve all text, logos, images, colors, and layout.” If it still fails, use the contextual bar to edit manually or work from a duplicate of the design.
Editable text changes when only the photo should change
Say: “Modify the photo only. Keep all editable text, the logo, and the headline unchanged.” If exact typography matters, make the image change first and apply or verify the text manually afterward.
The prompt is rejected
Rephrase it as a concrete design action, identify a specific object, and split a complex request into smaller steps. If the action remains unsupported, use the corresponding manual Express control.
The result damages branding
Compare every generated asset with your approved brand fonts, colors, logos, and graphics. Adobe’s release notes describe brand-asset workflows, but the Assistant is still a beta and should not be trusted without verification.

Adobe Express AI Assistant is a meaningful workflow change because it can act on existing design structure rather than merely generating a new image. It is useful for rapid layout fixes, asset replacement, typography, color changes, image restyling, and some lightweight video or audio adjustments.
But it is still a limited, account-dependent beta. It is desktop-only, does not provide persistent conversation or memory, automatically selects its model, and cannot guarantee that untouched elements will remain untouched. The best current workflow is hybrid: describe the broad change, inspect the result, correct the details manually, and proofread everything before export.
