Adobe has released Photoshop tools for generating and enlarging still images, but VideoGigaGAN is not a confirmed Photoshop or Premiere feature. It is an Adobe Research project for video super-resolution. For painters using digital references, Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Generative Upscale are the practical tools to assess now—with care not to mistake AI-invented detail for what was in the original image.
Three names, three different things
The title “VideoGigaGAN upscaling feature” can suggest that all three technologies are available in the same product. They are not. Adobe’s current Photoshop documentation describes Generative Fill and Generative Upscale as image-editing features. VideoGigaGAN is a research model for enlarging video.

Adobe’s feature overview describes Generative Upscale but does not establish that it uses VideoGigaGAN: Photoshop generative AI features. Adobe Research’s VideoGigaGAN page describes a research project, not a customer-facing product release: VideoGigaGAN: Towards Detail-Rich Video Super-Resolution.

What Photoshop Generative Fill can do
Generative Fill is a localized image-generation workflow. Select an area, then ask the tool to add or replace content, or leave the prompt blank to fill the selection using surrounding image context. It can also remove unwanted content. Photoshop presents generated variations in the Properties panel, so you can compare options rather than committing to the first one. Adobe’s current desktop instructions are at Edit images with Generative Fill.

For a painter, this can be a fast way to test a different object, extend a background, or make alternate composition references. It is less appropriate when a reference must preserve exact information: for example, a product’s lettering, a building’s measured geometry, or a historical object’s original surface.
Choose the selection with the result in mind
A selection that hugs an object too tightly may cut off a shadow, reflection, hair, or contact edge. A broader selection gives the model more context and room to blend, but also gives it permission to change more of the image. Include enough surrounding area for the relationship you need, then check the boundary and nearby details after generation.
Models available in Photoshop
Adobe’s June 2026 documentation lists these Generative Fill choices: Firefly Image 5, Firefly Fill & Expand, and Firefly Image 1 from Adobe; Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro, Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana, FLUX.2 pro, and FLUX.1 Kontext [pro] from partners. This is a dated snapshot, not a promise that every model will remain available in every Photoshop version, region, account, subscription, or product surface. Adobe announced that Firefly Image 3 began leaving the model picker with Photoshop 27.6 on April 28, 2026; it remained temporarily functional in versions 26.0–27.5, with full service removal across versions and plans announced for August 2026. Adobe recommended Firefly Fill & Expand as its replacement. If an older tutorial tells you to select Firefly Image 3, its menu instructions may no longer match your installation. Check Adobe’s retirement notice.
Adobe models and partner models are not interchangeable terms
Adobe positions Firefly as commercially oriented, and its models are integrated into the Photoshop workflow. Partner models offer other generation behaviors and may be useful when Firefly does not produce a suitable variation. Do not assume that Adobe’s statements about Firefly apply identically to every partner model: review the terms that apply to the selected model and your intended project. Model quality, credit use, and availability can also differ. Adobe documents the available choices in its model-selection guide.
How to use Generative Fill on desktop
- Choose File > Open and open the image.
- Use a selection tool, such as Selection Brush, to mark the area to change.
- Select Generative Fill.
- In the Contextual Task Bar, open the model picker and choose an available model.
- Enter a prompt describing the change, or leave it blank for a contextual fill.
- Select Generate, then review the variations in the Properties panel.
When an inserted object looks pasted on, try including the contact area in the selection and specifying its position, scale, material, and lighting in the prompt. Adobe also describes Harmonize as a tool that adjusts lighting, colors, shadows, and details to blend an object with its background: Photoshop generative AI features. Manual adjustments to perspective, grain, blur, and edges may still be needed.

Use a reference image when appearance matters
For Adobe Firefly models, Adobe’s documented workflow is to make a selection, choose Generative Fill, select Reference image in the Contextual Task Bar, upload an image, then set whether it applies to the Object or Whole image and choose Swap the selected area or Place into the selected area. For partner models, the documentation describes support for up to three reference images with FLUX and up to eight with Gemini, subject to the model and current implementation. If a generation misses the mark
- Undo or remove that variation, then adjust the selection: narrow it to protect surrounding elements or widen it to include needed context.
- Make the prompt more specific about placement, scale, lighting, and material.
- Try another available model or use a reference image when the object or composition needs tighter guidance.
- Generate and compare multiple variations; inspect edges and nearby parts of the image before using one as a painting reference.
What Generative Upscale does—and what it cannot promise
Generative Upscale is Photoshop’s Firefly-powered option for increasing a still image’s resolution while improving apparent detail, clarity, and sharpness. It can be convenient when you want to enlarge a reference without leaving Photoshop, but an AI-generated texture is not necessarily information recovered from the original capture. Adobe’s feature overview does not establish a universal enlargement factor, processing time, benchmark, or comparison with VideoGigaGAN.
For painting, that distinction matters: an attractive enlarged eye, leaf, fabric weave, or architectural edge might be a plausible invention rather than a faithful clue. Treat the output as an interpretive reference, not as proof of what the source contained. For evidentiary, scientific, medical, legal, or historical use, retain the original and avoid representing generated detail as recovered fact.

Check the enlargement before relying on it
- Keep an untouched copy of the original.
- Compare the enlarged image with the source, including at 100% or higher.
- Inspect faces, text, jewelry, repeated patterns, foliage, fine lines, and edges for invented or distorted detail.
- For critical work, compare with conventional resizing, sharpening, denoising, or a dedicated upscaler rather than assuming one method is best.
- Where provenance matters, document that AI enhancement was used.
VideoGigaGAN is a video research model, not a Photoshop command
Adobe Research dates its VideoGigaGAN paper to June 13, 2025, and associates it with CVPR 2025. The paper describes a generative video-super-resolution model built on GigaGAN, aimed at producing fine detail while reducing flicker and instability. It reports demonstrations at up to 8× super-resolution and evaluations against state-of-the-art video-super-resolution models on public datasets. That 8× figure is the scale demonstrated by the paper; it is not a guarantee of eight times more faithful source information.
The project addresses a real difference between enlarging a still and enlarging moving footage. A single frame can look plausible on its own while generated detail changes from one frame to the next. A video system must keep edges, text, faces, textures, motion boundaries, and newly generated detail visually coherent over time. VideoGigaGAN’s paper focuses on that detail-versus-temporal-consistency problem; a research result does not by itself establish production readiness or availability in Adobe’s consumer apps.
The reviewed Adobe Research page does not announce a public Photoshop, Premiere, Firefly, plug-in, API, or standalone consumer release called VideoGigaGAN. If you need to upscale footage now, look for a video-upscaling tool whose vendor documentation confirms the actual product and workflow; do not assume VideoGigaGAN is a hidden Adobe menu item.

Which tool fits the job?

A dedicated upscaler may be worth evaluating if batch processing, repeatable controls, or restoration is central to your work. Topaz Labs is one vendor in this category, but compare its current capabilities and terms on its official site; no single tool is universally superior without testing the same source images at the same output sizes.
Credits, plans, and access
Adobe says generative credits are shared across many Creative Cloud products and Firefly. Most standard generations use one credit per generation, while partner-model and premium-feature use can vary by model, output, and file size. Paid Creative Cloud Pro and Firefly plans can include unlimited standard generations; premium features deduct credits. Monthly credits reset according to the plan’s billing date, do not roll over, and Adobe says it does not automatically charge users for extra credits: users must choose an add-on or plan. Check the current Photoshop credit guidance and Adobe generative credits FAQ for account-specific details.
Adobe’s June 2026 FAQ listed monthly allocations of 2,000 credits for Firefly Standard, 4,000 for Firefly Pro, 10,000 for Firefly Pro Plus, and 50,000 for Firefly Premium. These are credit amounts, not prices; Adobe also says paid Firefly plans include unlimited standard image and vector generations, with premium features using credits. Plan names, access, and regional pricing can change, so consult the live Firefly plans page before subscribing.
Photoshop’s January and March 2026 announcements describe a broader Adobe rollout across Photoshop and Firefly, including web and Firefly Image Editor tools; they do not make every feature available on every surface or plan. If a model or command is missing, check your Photoshop build, product surface, account and plan, regional access, sign-in or internet connection, and whether the model has been retired.
