If Neural Filters stopped working immediately after updating to the original Photoshop 22.5 release, the historically recommended workaround was to roll Photoshop back to 22.4.3. Adobe Community staff suggested that version after users reported errors following the 22.5 update.
This is a historical Photoshop 22.5-era problem—not a universal fix for current Photoshop. If you are using a recent release, update it first and troubleshoot the current installation rather than installing an unsupported legacy build.

What the Photoshop 22.5 Neural Filters problem looked like
Reports associated with the initial Photoshop 22.5 release included:
- “There was an error running this filter.”
- “We’ve temporarily disabled this filter because of an error.”
- The Neural Filters panel opened, but filters would not load.
- Download buttons or cloud icons did nothing.
- A filter downloaded successfully but failed when enabled.
- A filter appeared greyed out or unavailable.
- Photoshop froze or appeared to process indefinitely.
- Only one filter failed while others worked.
These symptoms can also result from sign-in, network, permissions, corrupted model downloads, GPU, or document problems. They do not prove that the 22.5 regression is the cause.
Adobe Community staff acknowledged reports after the 22.5 update and identified rolling back to 22.4.3 as a temporary workaround. This attribution comes from an Adobe Community response, not a current standalone Adobe release-note entry. See the Adobe Community thread.
Quickest workaround: install Photoshop 22.4.3
Before changing versions
- Save and close open documents.
- Back up custom actions, brushes, workspaces, plugins, presets, and preferences.
- Record your installed version. On Windows, choose Help > About Photoshop. On macOS, choose Photoshop > About Photoshop.
- If you still need the newer version, plan to keep it installed alongside the older build where Creative Cloud permits.
Install the older Photoshop build
- Quit Photoshop.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Select Apps.
- Find Photoshop and open its three-dot More actions menu.
- Choose Other versions.
- Find Photoshop 22.4.3 and select Install.
- When offered an option such as Remove older versions, deselect it if you need to preserve another installation.
Adobe documents this process in its guide to installing previous Creative Cloud app versions. Adobe may not offer 22.4.3 in every account, operating system, region, or managed installation. Work and school administrators can also restrict available versions and update controls.

In Creative Cloud preferences, disable Photoshop automatic updates or use the available advanced settings to retain the previous version. Check the setting again after installation because controls can differ between personal and managed accounts. Do not assume Adobe will continue offering 22.4.3.

If Photoshop 22.4.3 is unavailable
Try the closest earlier 22.4.x build that Creative Cloud offers, but describe it accurately: 22.4.3 was the documented workaround, while another 22.4.x build is only a fallback.
Photoshop 22.5 was not a single build. Adobe’s legacy-version page lists 22.5.9 as the latest 22.5-series update, so reports about the initial 22.5.0 release should not automatically be applied to every later 22.5.x build.
For most users in 2026, the better option is a current supported Photoshop release. Adobe’s current desktop release information lists Photoshop 27.8 as of June 2026, although version availability can change. Consult Adobe’s legacy-version information and current release page. Do not use unofficial or cracked installers.

Use a controlled test rather than reopening a complex production file:
- Launch Photoshop 22.4.3.
- Open a small, local RGB, 8-bit-per-channel image.
- Choose Filter > Neural Filters.
- Open All filters and download or enable one affected filter.
- Apply a mild setting.
- Choose an output such as New Layer or Smart Filter.
- Select OK and confirm that Photoshop finishes processing and creates the expected output.
That result indicates that the filter works in the rollback environment. It does not prove that every filter, document, or future installation will work identically.

Use this diagnostic ladder before repeatedly changing versions.
1. Update if you are not specifically affected by the old 22.5 regression
If you are already on a current or supported Photoshop release, install the latest available update, restart Photoshop and Creative Cloud, and verify the exact version. Adobe recommends updating for bug fixes through Creative Cloud or Help > Updates; see its Photoshop update guidance.
2. Check Adobe sign-in and connectivity
Sign in to Creative Cloud and check whether a firewall, VPN, proxy, or corporate network is blocking Adobe services. A filter model may need to download before use. Adobe says most Neural Filters work locally after download, while some processing uses Adobe cloud services and requires internet access. Account, licensing, and write-permission problems can produce similar failures.
3. Re-download the affected model
In Filter > Neural Filters, open All filters and download the affected filter again. If the interface offers a remove-and-redownload option, use it, then restart Photoshop before testing.

Do not treat deletion of a cache folder as a guaranteed fix. Neural Filter storage paths vary across Photoshop generations, and deleting files can force large model downloads without addressing a version bug. Adobe’s Neural Filters feedback guidance contains version-specific storage and issue information.
4. Test the document itself
Try a flattened, local RGB/8-bit image with a modest pixel size. Avoid indexed color, multichannel mode, unusual bit depths, cloud or network locations, and unusually complex layer structures for the first test. If the filter works on the clean file, the original document’s mode, size, layers, or resource requirements may be involved. These are practical diagnostic steps, not a claim that every filter has identical format restrictions.
5. Check GPU behavior without assuming it is the cause
Neural Filters use GPU acceleration where available and can fall back to CPU processing in some circumstances. CPU processing may be considerably slower, while a driver or GPU problem can contribute to freezes, crashes, or failures. Disabling the GPU is therefore not a universal fix for the 22.5 bug.
In current Photoshop versions, relevant checks include Help > GPU Compatibility, the document status bar’s GPU Mode, and Preferences > Performance > Use Graphics Processor. The GPU Compatibility command was introduced with Photoshop 23.0, so it may not exist in Photoshop 22.5. Adobe also says GPU use in virtual machines and remote desktop environments is not officially supported. See Adobe’s GPU documentation.
6. Preserve settings before resetting anything
If the problem persists, preserve custom settings and then consider a preference reset or a clean reinstall using Adobe’s current support guidance. A reset may remove or alter workspaces, presets, and other customizations, so it should not be the first step when the problem began exactly with 22.5.0.

Should you stay on Photoshop 22.4.3?
Stay on the older build only when it restores a necessary legacy workflow and you understand the cost. Photoshop 22.4.3 may lack later security fixes, bug fixes, file-format behavior, features, and plugin compatibility. Newer PSD or PSB files may also render differently in an older release. Creative Cloud may replace it unless update controls are changed.
If possible, keep a current supported Photoshop installation for ordinary work and use the legacy build only for the workflow that requires it. Adobe’s legacy-version page should be treated as a reference, not a promise of continuing support or availability.
Choose the right fix
- It started immediately after Photoshop 22.5.0: the historical 22.4.3 rollback is the most direct workaround.
- You use current Photoshop: update, sign in, verify model downloads, and test a clean RGB/8-bit file.
- Only one filter fails: investigate that filter’s model, download, beta status, and document requirements rather than assuming all Neural Filters are broken.
- 22.4.3 is unavailable: try the nearest offered 22.4.x build, or use the newest supported Photoshop release.
- The computer is managed: contact the administrator or Adobe Support if Creative Cloud hides older versions or update controls.
Beta Neural Filters are experimental, so results can vary; Adobe’s Neural Filters overview explains that distinction.
Is Photoshop still the right tool?
If you need PSD compatibility, Photoshop-specific Neural Filters, Adobe integrations, and a continuing Creative Cloud workflow, Photoshop remains the direct fit. If you only need conventional raster editing, Affinity Photo is a non-subscription-oriented alternative. GIMP is free and open source, while Topaz Photo AI is more specialized for enhancement tasks such as denoising, sharpening, and upscaling. None is a guaranteed replacement for Photoshop’s Neural Filters or exact Photoshop workflow.
