Adobe Project Indigo is a free experimental camera app for supported iPhones that aims for a more natural, less heavily processed look. It uses multi-frame computational photography, manual controls and JPEG or DNG capture—but it does not turn an iPhone into a DSLR or replace a camera’s interchangeable lens and adjustable aperture.
What Adobe Project Indigo does
Project Indigo is an Adobe Labs camera app for iPhone. Adobe designed it for people who want more control than a typical phone-camera workflow offers, along with a rendering style that avoids some of the bright, saturated and strongly sharpened look associated with smartphone photos.
That may be useful when taking a quick visual reference for a painting: a less aggressive rendering can feel more natural, while manual exposure and focus give you ways to adjust the capture. It is still a processed phone photograph, though, not a guaranteed color-accurate record of a scene. Treat it as a reference rather than a substitute for checking the subject under the light in which you intend to paint.

Does Indigo really make an iPhone photo look like a DSLR?
“SLR-like” describes Adobe’s rendering goal, not a change to the iPhone’s hardware. Indigo cannot give a phone an interchangeable lens or an adjustable aperture. Its approach is to capture and combine frames, then apply restrained image processing to produce a more natural-looking result.
How the multi-frame capture works
Indigo slightly underexposes to protect highlights, rapidly captures multiple frames, aligns and merges them to reduce shadow noise, and applies tone mapping, saturation, sharpening and semantic adjustments more conservatively. Adobe’s technical article gives an example that merges up to 32 frames; it says capture and processing can take a few seconds.

Adobe says the processing favors minimal smoothing, even if some noise remains. That trade-off is part of the intended look: less noise reduction can preserve texture, but the result is not necessarily as clean-looking as a more aggressively processed phone image.
What “DSLR-like” does—and does not—mean
The resemblance is about the image’s rendering, not identical image quality or photographic behavior. Indigo still depends on the iPhone’s cameras and computational processing. Adobe’s materials describe the app’s design and features, but do not establish a controlled head-to-head advantage over Apple Camera, other manual-camera apps or a DSLR.

Which iPhones support Project Indigo?
Adobe says Indigo runs on Pro and Pro Max iPhones beginning with the iPhone 12 series, and on non-Pro iPhones beginning with the iPhone 14 series. Adobe community guidance specifically lists iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, and iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, as supported. That guidance recommends an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or newer, for the experience Adobe advises.
Adobe also recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free storage for the app, its AI models and photos. Compatibility and available features can change, so check the current App Store listing and Adobe guidance for your particular iPhone before installing.

Can Project Indigo shoot RAW?
Yes. Indigo saves JPEGs and DNG raw files. Adobe describes its DNG as computationally treated rather than a wholly untouched sensor capture: it receives the same computational treatment as the JPEG while retaining more editing latitude.
That makes DNG useful when you want more room to adjust a capture later, but it should not be mistaken for an unprocessed file. If you are making a painting reference, keep the original scene and lighting in mind when editing; additional latitude does not guarantee that a file will represent color exactly as you saw it.

What controls does the app offer?
Indigo includes manual controls for exposure time, ISO and focus. It also exposes computational options, including Frames to Merge and Merge Method. The manual settings let you steer capture, while the merge options affect how the multi-frame image is made; the available material does not establish one universally best setting for every scene.
More frames and computational processing are part of Indigo’s approach, but they bring a capture-time trade-off: Adobe says processing may take a few seconds. That can matter if your subject is moving or the moment is brief.
Does Project Indigo work with Lightroom?
Yes. Indigo’s filmstrip can open Lightroom mobile. When both a JPEG and DNG were captured, Adobe says Lightroom opens the DNG for editing. Lightroom’s current App Store listing documents DNG support and features including reflection and distraction removal; those are Lightroom features, not a promise that every edit is automatic or available in Indigo itself.
What is the Indigo AI Playground?
In an Adobe Research article dated July 20, 2026, Adobe described an experimental AI Playground inside Indigo. Its buttons can remove distractors, add shallow depth of field, apply photographic or artistic styles, change lighting, critique a photo, suggest a reshoot or accept a custom text prompt. These are experimental editing and assistance tools, not part of a guaranteed standard feature set.
