Adobe’s 3D rotation tool for flat drawings is now Illustrator’s Turntable

Adobe’s Project Turntable has graduated from a 2024 MAX demo to Turntable in Illustrator 30.3 and later. Here is how the feature generates 2D views, what it costs, which artwork it supports, and where real 3D tools remain the better choice.

Adobe’s Project Turntable is no longer just a demo. The experimental Illustrator technology shown at Adobe MAX in October 2024 became the production Turntable feature in Illustrator 30.3 on March 31, 2026. In the current Illustrator 30.7 desktop release, Turntable uses Adobe Firefly to generate new views of a selected 2D vector or raster object.

Despite the 3D-looking result, Turntable does not create a conventional editable 3D model. It generates linked 2D artwork that simulates different viewpoints. That makes it useful for concepting, character turnarounds, quick perspective references, and rotating GIFs—but not a replacement for modeling, rigging, CAD, or exact manual redraws.

From Adobe MAX Sneak to an Illustrator feature

The original technology was called Project Turntable. Adobe introduced it during the Adobe MAX 2024 Sneaks session, presented by Adobe Research Scientist Zhiqin Chen.

The demonstration started with a flat Illustrator scene containing a warrior and a dragon. After the character was selected, Adobe showed it turning to reveal side, rear, and elevated views—angles that would normally require an illustrator to redraw the character by hand. The effect looked like a flat drawing had become a rotatable 3D object.

That first presentation was tightly controlled and experimental. The contemporary October 18, 2024 report from Ars Technica described a full horizontal rotation and more limited vertical movement, while noting that Adobe had not committed to releasing the technology. Adobe’s original Research description and MAX page were more precise: the goal was to rotate a 2D vector drawing through 3D space and produce 2D vector artwork representing the new view.

The status changed in stages:

  • October 2024: Project Turntable appeared as an experimental MAX Sneak, with no public release commitment.
  • August 2025: Turntable entered the Illustrator Public Beta, initially in build 29.9.14.
  • October 2025: Adobe reported a redesigned interface and improved access in beta build 30.1.65 and later.
  • March 31, 2026: Turntable shipped as a production Illustrator feature in version 30.3.
  • August 10, 2026: Adobe’s release notes list Illustrator 30.7 as the latest desktop version, with Turntable still available.

That timeline matters. Articles published in 2024 were accurate when they called Project Turntable a demo. Calling it only a demo today is outdated.

What Turntable actually does

Turntable accepts a selected vector or raster object and uses Adobe Firefly to synthesize views from other angles. Illustrator places the result on the canvas as a linked Generative Object, while keeping the original artwork as a separate group.

The interface makes the object feel as though it is being rotated. A slider lets you move between generated views, and tilt controls let you look from above or below. Adobe documents lateral rotation of up to 180 degrees in either direction and vertical tilt of up to 30 degrees upward or downward.

Adobe’s tutorial describes 74 generated views across a 360-degree rotation, while its generative-credit documentation describes 74 variations per generation. Those figures should not be read as a promise that every view is evenly spaced, equally detailed, or physically accurate. They describe the amount of generated material available from a generation, not the quality of every possible camera angle.

The current feature can:

  • Generate multiple lateral and elevated views of an isolated object.
  • Preserve the source illustration’s general colors, stroke treatment, and visual direction as a design goal.
  • Move through the generated views with the Contextual Task Bar.
  • Extract the next neighboring view to the left or right.
  • Place all available views on the Illustrator canvas.
  • Export the generated rotation as an animated GIF.
  • Offer per-view feedback, including downvoting and reporting controls.
  • Store generated material in Illustrator’s Generation History system.

In practical terms, Turntable exchanges some manual redraw time for generative uncertainty. It can quickly provide a useful visual turnaround, but it does not know everything about the hidden sides of a drawing.

How to use Turntable in Illustrator

Basic workflow

  1. Open the artwork in the desktop version of Illustrator.
  2. Use the Selection tool to select the object you want to turn.
  3. Choose Object > Generative > Turntable.
  4. Wait while Illustrator generates the views.
  5. Drag the Contextual Task Bar slider to move horizontally through the result.
  6. Use the upward or downward tilt controls to inspect elevated or low-angle views.
  7. Choose Add next rotated view to left or Add next rotated view to right to extract adjacent views.
  8. Choose Place all views on canvas if you want a layout of the available angles.
  9. Choose Export as GIF when you need a quick rotating preview.

Depending on the Illustrator workspace, Turntable can also be opened from the Generative button, the Transform panel, the Properties panel, the Control panel, or the right-click menu. Adobe’s current Turntable help page documents those access points and controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIF export options

The GIF export dialog provides more control than a simple screen recording. You can choose:

  • Front views.
  • Top-down views.
  • Bottom-up views.
  • Combinations of those view groups.
  • All frames or a selected horizontal range.
  • Frame rate.
  • Linear or back-and-forth playback.
  • Clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
  • Background color.

This makes Turntable particularly useful for a rotating character, mascot, toy, prop, or illustrated product preview intended for a presentation or social post.

How to keep one generated angle for independent editing

Turntable’s output is editable Illustrator artwork, but it is not a collection of ordinary, permanently independent drawings while the Turntable relationship remains active.

If you edit a generated view and then move the Turntable slider, Illustrator may regenerate or replace the linked result, causing those direct edits to be lost. To preserve a specific angle:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Duplicate the Generative Object first.
  2. Select the view you want to keep.
  3. Choose Object > Ungroup.
  4. Edit the resulting regular Illustrator object independently.

Ungrouping breaks the links between the generated views. That is useful when you are ready to clean up one angle, but the independent copy will no longer behave as a synchronized Turntable object. Save a copy before ungrouping so you retain the original generated set.

For vector artwork, Illustrator presents the generated views as editable objects within a vector workflow. However, users should inspect and clean the result before treating it as production-ready vector art. Turntable does not promise to preserve the original path structure, layer semantics, live text, gradient objects, or every native Illustrator feature.

Is Turntable really making a 3D model?

No—not in the conventional 3D-production sense. Turntable creates the appearance of a rotatable 3D object by generating new 2D views. Adobe does not document it as exporting a polygonal mesh, CAD object, rig, or standard 3D asset such as OBJ, GLB, or FBX.

Adobe’s Research team explains the distinction in its account of Turntable and Project Turn-style. The team initially considered converting the artwork into a 3D object, then moved toward a system that reimagines how the artwork should look from different perspectives. Illustrator’s current implementation reflects that decision: the result is a linked Generative Object containing generated views, rather than a user-editable 3D scene with a mesh and camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful description is therefore AI-generated multi-angle view synthesis. Saying that Turntable converts any drawing into a true 3D model, reconstructs a physically correct backside, or creates a fully rigged character would overstate what Adobe documents.

The hidden-geometry problem

A single flat drawing cannot contain complete information about its unseen sides. When Turntable generates a rear or side view, the system has to infer details that were never visible in the source.

Adobe says the system is designed to preserve colors, stroke styles, and the artist’s intent. That is a design goal, not a guarantee that the source object’s actual geometry has been recovered. The generated result is an interpretation of the artwork.

Depending on the source, a generated turnaround may invent or alter:

  • Hidden limbs, accessories, facial features, or object thickness.
  • The shape of the back or underside.
  • Symmetry and the alignment of repeated details.
  • Text, logos, and small markings.
  • Line weight, texture, and minor style details.

Extreme rotations are especially useful for checking whether those inferred details remain consistent. A character’s costume may change from one view to the next; a product may acquire an implausible rear surface; or a logo may become distorted. These are practical risks inherent in generating unseen views, not an independently measured failure rate.

For that reason, Turntable is strongest as a concepting aid, perspective reference, quick turnaround, or starting point for cleanup. It is not a reliable source of exact engineering geometry or a guaranteed final model sheet for animation.

What artwork works best?

Adobe recommends using a standalone object without a background, preferably one with a recognizable real-world form. Illustrated characters, product-like objects, and clear silhouettes are better candidates than artwork whose form is ambiguous.

Good candidates

  • Cartoon characters and mascots.
  • Animals and stylized creatures.
  • Simple props and toys.
  • Isolated product illustrations.
  • Stylized vehicles.
  • Objects with a clear silhouette and understandable volume.

Riskier candidates

  • Logos and exact brand marks.
  • Diagrams and technical illustrations.
  • Typography and text-heavy artwork.
  • Geometric patterns and abstract shapes.
  • Branded packaging that must remain exact.
  • Artwork using transparency, complex effects, or semi-transparent overlays.

Adobe specifically warns that Turntable is less reliable for abstract geometric shapes, live text, and objects whose appearance does not imply a recognizable physical form. In those cases, Illustrator’s conventional 3D tools may be more predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unsupported Illustrator objects

Adobe’s current limitation guidance lists these native Illustrator objects as unsupported by Turntable:

  • Freeform gradients.
  • Radial gradients.
  • Mesh gradients.
  • Opacity.
  • Blending constructs.
  • Vector and raster effects, including Grain and Blur.
  • Live strokes.
  • Area text.

Unsupported does not necessarily mean that Illustrator will refuse to select the object. It means the object may not be accepted correctly or may produce an unusable result. There is also a broader category of artwork that is technically eligible but simply performs poorly because its structure is difficult to infer.

If a composition includes effects or live elements, work on a copy and simplify it before generating. Depending on the artwork, that may mean removing the background, expanding live strokes, converting text to compatible outlined artwork, or flattening effects. Keep the original layered file intact because these changes can reduce future editability.

Is the result still vector?

Turntable supports both raster and vector inputs, so the answer depends partly on what you start with. Adobe’s product and Research materials emphasize preserving the vector-art workflow and producing Illustrator-editable output for vector artwork. That does not mean every Turntable result is vector simply because it appears inside Illustrator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a vector source, the generated view can be extracted and edited as Illustrator artwork. It should still be inspected for unnecessary paths, inconsistent shapes, altered lettering, and other cleanup issues. Do not assume that the original paths, live text, gradients, effects, or layer relationships have been preserved. Adobe’s unsupported-object list is a clear indication that native Illustrator structure is not universally retained.

Generative-credit cost and availability

Adobe’s current Generative Credits FAQ lists Turntable at:

Item Adobe’s listed amount
Generative credits 20 credits per generation
Variations 74 variations per generation

Those 20 credits are a usage charge, not the price of an Illustrator subscription. Access, credit availability, and related limits can depend on the user’s Adobe plan and region. Adobe’s Illustrator release notes also identify Turntable as unavailable in mainland China.

When Turntable is the right tool

Turntable is a good fit when:

  • You have one strong view of a character or object.
  • You want to explore alternate angles quickly.
  • An approximate interpretation of the hidden sides is acceptable.
  • Preserving the illustration’s visual direction matters more than exact physical accuracy.
  • You want to stay inside Illustrator’s 2D workflow.
  • You need a few perspective references or a rotating GIF.
  • You are willing to clean up selected views afterward.

When Turntable is the wrong tool

Use another workflow when:

  • The backside must be factually correct.
  • A logo, trademark, product label, or piece of typography must remain exact.
  • The result must follow an approved model sheet, CAD drawing, product specification, or engineering reference.
  • The design is highly abstract, geometric, or dependent on precise profiles.
  • The artwork relies on unsupported gradients, opacity, effects, live strokes, or area text.
  • You need a real 3D mesh, UVs, rigging, animation controls, or export to a 3D application.
  • You need deterministic, repeatable results across revisions.

The central trade-off is straightforward: Turntable reduces manual redraw and exploration time, but it introduces invented details, possible inconsistencies, credit usage, and cleanup work.

Alternatives to Turntable

Illustrator 3D and Materials

Illustrator’s conventional 3D and Materials tools are more appropriate when an object is geometric, abstract, typographic, or based on a known profile. They can extrude and revolve shapes, rotate them, apply materials, and control lighting and shadows. Adobe specifically recommends conventional 3D for simple abstract objects.

The trade-off is stylistic. Native 3D is more controllable and geometrically coherent, but it may make a hand-drawn character or organic illustration look like an artificially extruded object.

Project Neo

Adobe Project Neo is the better Adobe option when the goal is to build and manipulate genuinely dimensional artwork. Neo supports editing designs as 3D artwork, adjusting perspective and lighting, and importing and exporting SVG between Neo and Illustrator. Results can be sent back to Illustrator as editable vectors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Neo requires a more explicitly 3D-oriented workflow. Turntable is faster when the artist wants to remain primarily in a 2D illustration environment.

Photoshop Rotate Object

Photoshop has a separate Rotate Object feature for pixel layers and Smart Objects. In Photoshop, access it through Edit > Rotate Object or Transform image > Rotate object in the Contextual Task Bar. This is a raster-oriented alternative, not a replacement for Illustrator’s vector workflow.

Manual redraw or a conventional 3D package

For animation-ready turnarounds, game assets, exact product geometry, repeatable camera moves, or physically accurate hidden surfaces, manual redraw or a conventional 3D package remains the safer production route. Turntable can still help as an early reference, but it should not be treated as a substitute for a controlled asset pipeline.

Troubleshooting Turntable

Turntable is missing

Check the following:

  1. Use the desktop version of Illustrator, not an older build or an unsupported environment.
  2. Update to at least Illustrator 30.3 for the released feature. Adobe lists 30.7 as the latest desktop release as of August 10, 2026.
  3. Confirm that the feature is available in your region. Adobe lists mainland China as an exception.
  4. Select a supported object rather than an unsupported native Illustrator object.
  5. Check your internet connection and Adobe account. Generative Illustrator features require online services, and Illustrator requires online activation.

Adobe’s current Illustrator 30.x requirements include at least 8 GB of RAM, internet access, and supported operating systems such as macOS 13 Ventura or later and supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 releases, including Windows 11 23H2 and 24H2. Illustrator 30.0 dropped support for macOS Monterey and Windows 11 versions 21H2 and 22H2. See the current technical requirements before troubleshooting an installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The command is disabled or generation fails

  • Remove the background and select only the object.
  • Try a clean, standalone object instead of a full composition.
  • Remove or simplify unsupported gradients, opacity, blending, filters, and effects.
  • Convert live strokes or area text into compatible artwork where appropriate.
  • Save a copy before expanding, ungrouping, or permanently changing the artwork.
  • If a direct edit disappears after moving the Turntable slider, use Undo and ungroup a duplicated Generative Object before editing it again.

Selection alone does not guarantee a useful generation. An object can be technically selectable while still being too abstract, effect-heavy, or ambiguous for a convincing multi-angle result.

The output looks wrong

Inspect the front, side, rear, and tilted views before using the result. Look for changed proportions, invented accessories, broken symmetry, incorrect lettering, altered logos, and inconsistent line work.

Use a flawed result as a concepting aid, perspective reference, or starting point for cleanup. Do not use it without human review for legal trademarks, exact logos, technical documentation, product engineering, final animation model sheets, manufacturing, or packaging artwork. That recommendation follows from the generative nature of the feature and Adobe’s stated limitations; it is not an independently measured failure rate.

The bottom line on Adobe’s flat-drawing rotation tool

Project Turntable was the name of Adobe’s 2024 experiment. Today, its production successor is Turntable in Illustrator. It can take a selected raster or vector object, generate a set of linked views, let you explore up to 180 degrees left or right and 30 degrees up or down, extract selected angles, and export a rotating GIF.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the most accurate mental model is not a drawing converted into a true 3D asset. Turntable is a fast, style-aware generator of new 2D perspectives. It is valuable when approximate hidden geometry is acceptable and speed matters. For exact forms, repeatable production, real meshes, rigging, or technically correct turnarounds, use Illustrator’s native 3D tools, Project Neo, manual redraw, or a conventional 3D application instead.

Version and availability details in this article are current to August 10, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Adobe Turntable create a real 3D model?

No. Turntable generates linked 2D views that simulate rotation. Adobe does not document it as creating an editable mesh, CAD object, rig, or standard 3D export such as OBJ, GLB, or FBX.

Can Turntable rotate any Illustrator object?

No. Adobe lists freeform, radial, and mesh gradients; opacity; blending constructs; vector and raster effects such as Grain and Blur; live strokes; and area text as unsupported. Abstract shapes and live text may also produce poor results even when they can be selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many credits does a Turntable generation use?

Adobe’s current Generative Credits FAQ lists 20 generative credits per Turntable generation and 74 variations per generation. Access and credit terms can vary by Adobe plan and region.

Can I edit a generated Turntable view?

Yes, a generated view can be extracted and edited as Illustrator artwork. To keep edits from being affected by the linked Turntable object, duplicate the Generative Object, select the desired view, and choose Object > Ungroup. This breaks the links between the generated views on that copy.

The Bottom Line

Turntable is best understood as a rapid perspective generator for 2D artists, not as a replacement for 3D modeling. It can save redraw time and produce useful alternate views or GIFs, but its unseen geometry is inferred, its output may need cleanup, and it does not provide a conventional mesh, rig, or exact production asset.
