Adobe’s “soon” announcement is now partly reality. Photoshop’s AI Assistant is in public beta on Photoshop web and mobile, while Adobe describes desktop access as an early beta. You can ask for edits in ordinary language, let the assistant perform them or request step-by-step instruction, then review and refine the result. It is a conversational co-pilot—not an autonomous replacement for a skilled retoucher.
Adobe first previewed the feature at MAX on October 28, 2025 (Adobe’s announcement). Public beta availability on web and mobile followed on March 10, 2026, and Adobe expanded its broader creative-agent beta across Creative Cloud apps on June 18.

What Photoshop’s AI Assistant actually is
Traditional Photoshop generative tools are tool-first: select Generative Fill or Remove, type a prompt, and review variations. The AI Assistant is outcome-first. You describe what you want, and it can select or orchestrate relevant Photoshop capabilities for you.
Adobe calls the underlying system a creative agent. Adobe says it can coordinate multi-step workflows, but that does not mean it independently understands every image or completes an unsupervised professional retouch. You still decide what to delegate, inspect the result, and accept, revise, or undo it.
What it can do in the beta
- Remove distractions and unwanted objects.
- Replace an image background.
- Refine lighting and adjust color.
- Apply an edit from a natural-language description.
- Explain a manual workflow step by step instead of changing the image.
- Accept voice requests in the Photoshop mobile app, according to Adobe’s March announcement.
- Use AI Markup in Photoshop web: draw over the area to change, then describe the modification.
- Assist with longer, multi-step workflows as Adobe rolls out its creative agent across Creative Cloud.
These are announced capabilities, not a guarantee that every Photoshop command, selection, layer structure, or compositing task is available through the assistant.

Access can vary by account, country, language, plan, platform, and rollout stage. If the control is missing, check the beta notice in your current Adobe app rather than assuming your subscription is ineligible.
Photoshop Assistant, Firefly Assistant, and the creative agent are different
Photoshop AI Assistant operates inside Photoshop and helps apply or learn image edits. Firefly AI Assistant is a broader conversational interface in the Firefly web app; Adobe says it can draw on many Adobe creative tools and save work for use across applications. Adobe announced its public beta on April 27, 2026, initially for Creative Cloud Pro and paid Firefly customers, with complimentary daily generative credits during the beta.
Creative agent is Adobe’s underlying agentic-AI concept and system powering assistants across Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, InDesign, Frame.io, and Firefly. It is not a separate Photoshop editing mode with identical controls everywhere.

How to try a Photoshop edit
- Open Photoshop web or mobile and load an image.
- Open the AI Assistant supplied by your beta build.
- Describe one concrete outcome, such as “Remove the people in the background.”
- Review the proposed result. Accept it, ask for a narrower revision, or request instructions instead.
- Undo and retry if the edit changes the wrong area or introduces artifacts.
Adobe has not published one stable click-by-click interface for every build, so button names and placement can differ between web, mobile, and desktop beta versions.
Use AI Markup for a localized change
- In Photoshop web, locate AI Markup in the contextual task bar if your account has it.
- Draw over or around the region to change.
- Add a text instruction describing the desired result.
- Inspect edges and nearby pixels, then tighten the markup or prompt if necessary.
Ask it to teach instead of act
Try “Show me how to remove this distraction manually, step by step,” or “Give me a non-destructive workflow for changing the background.” Adobe’s research describes this choice between having the agent do the work and receiving instruction while retaining control (Adobe Research).
Prompt patterns that improve control
State the object, location, action, constraints, scope, and desired style. For example:

- “Replace only the sky with an overcast sky. Keep the buildings, horizon, and color temperature unchanged.”
- “Brighten the face slightly without changing the background or skin texture.”
- “Show me the manual, non-destructive steps for this edit instead of applying it.”
Specific wording helps, but it cannot guarantee a correct result. Check faces, hands, logos, text, product details, shadows, seams, and subject edges at high zoom.
What “editable” means—and what it does not promise
Adobe emphasizes that creators remain in control and that results stay editable. In practice, “editable” may mean a new layer, a revisable generated result, a sequence of suggested Photoshop commands, or a pixel change that is less reversible. The announcements do not establish that every assistant action creates a perfectly layered, fully non-destructive document. Check the layer stack and save a version before accepting important changes.

- Too much of the image changes: mark a smaller region, say “change only the selected area,” name elements to preserve, or use ordinary masks and selections.
- Plausible but incorrect output: inspect identity-relevant details, typography, logos, lighting direction, repeated textures, and seams.
- Missing feature: you may be on an unsupported platform, production build, region, language, account tier, or gradual rollout.
- Credit confusion: Adobe distinguishes standard AI features from premium generative features. Creative Cloud Pro advertises unlimited standard AI image/vector features and 4,000 monthly credits for premium features, but Adobe has not published a complete per-action credit table for the assistant.
- Cloud and data questions: the announcements do not fully specify local versus cloud processing, retention, review, or model-improvement treatment for every plan and setting.
Beta controls, eligibility, pricing, credit consumption, and final release scope can change.

Buying the cheapest Photoshop plan does not, by itself, guarantee every AI Assistant beta feature. Check the in-product notice and current plan terms before subscribing.
Who should use it—and who should wait
Use it now if
- You already work in Photoshop and want less tool switching for repetitive edits.
- You want conversational access to familiar Photoshop operations.
- You value both automatic edits and explanations while learning.
- You are comfortable reviewing beta output inside an editable workflow.
Wait if
- You need guaranteed desktop parity or stable production behavior.
- Your work demands pixel-perfect masking, typography, identity accuracy, or complex layer construction.
- You are uncomfortable with cloud-dependent AI or unresolved plan-specific data policies.
- You only need occasional simple graphics and do not want a subscription.
Alternatives by workflow
- Adobe Firefly: broader conversational ideation and cross-app creative workflows.
- Adobe Express: quick social posts, flyers, and templates rather than detailed compositing.
- Canva: browser-first templates and lightweight image editing.
- Photopea: a browser editor with a Photoshop-like interface.
- GIMP: free, locally installed raster editing without a Creative Cloud subscription.
- Affinity: professional desktop raster, vector, and layout tools outside Adobe’s traditional subscription workflow; verify current ownership and pricing directly.
None should be assumed to offer an equivalent agentic Photoshop assistant without separate verification.
Bottom line
Photoshop’s AI Assistant has moved beyond a “coming soon” preview: it is a public beta on web and mobile, with desktop access still described as early beta. It is most useful as a conversational co-pilot that can accelerate routine edits or teach the workflow. Keep a human review step, preserve a version of the original, and choose an Adobe plan for the applications and usage you actually need—not for the word “agent” alone.
