Affinity is now one application instead of three. Relaunched by Canva on October 30, 2025, the platform combines the former Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher workflows in a single desktop environment. Its core vector, pixel-editing, and page-layout tools are advertised as free forever, while Canva AI and broader collaboration features remain separate considerations.
For painters, illustrators, photographers, and designers, that means fewer application switches without turning Affinity into a complete replacement for Adobe Creative Cloud or Canva’s browser-based editor.

The short version

What changed from Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher?
Previously, Affinity’s professional suite was divided into three applications:

The change is more than a visual redesign. The old V2 products were separate applications, even though Publisher users could bring in Designer and Photo capabilities through StudioLink when the relevant software was installed. The new Affinity puts the main categories inside one unified environment.
That does not mean every feature from the old applications has been audited and reproduced one-for-one. It is more accurate to think of the product as a new workspace containing three related toolsets. You still choose the appropriate mode for the job: Vector for paths and illustration, Pixel for raster editing and photography, and Layout for structured documents.
What can you do in the unified app?
Vector illustration and design
The Vector area is aimed at work that benefits from mathematically defined shapes and paths, including:
- Logos and brand marks
- Icons and interface graphics
- Illustrations
- Shapes, curves, and node editing
- Print and digital artwork
For a painter or illustrator, this is the part of Affinity suited to clean linework, scalable motifs, lettering elements, and artwork that must remain crisp at different sizes.
Pixel and photo editing
The Pixel area covers raster and photographic workflows. Canva highlights RAW development, retouching, compositing, non-destructive adjustments, Smart Selections, live filters, batch processing, and GPU acceleration. Those performance and capability descriptions are Canva’s claims rather than independent benchmarks.
Typical uses include:
- Developing RAW photographs
- Retouching and masking
- Compositing images and textures
- Applying non-destructive adjustments
- Using selections, live filters, and layer-based edits
- Processing groups of images
Layout and publishing
The Layout area is intended for multi-page and typography-heavy work, not merely placing text on a blank canvas. Canva names Smart Master Pages, shared text styles, and advanced typographic controls as part of the publishing workflow.
That makes it suitable for brochures, reports, books, portfolios, catalogues, and other documents that need consistent page structure, text formatting, and image placement.

How the Vector, Pixel, and Layout modes work
Independent coverage describes Vector, Pixel, and Layout as modes or toggles within the same application rather than separate programs. The practical benefit is that a project can move between kinds of work without requiring three application windows or separate installations.
For example, an illustrated publication might use Vector tools for a logo, Pixel tools to prepare a painted texture or photograph, and Layout tools to assemble the final pages. The modes reduce software switching, but they do not erase the differences between vector drawing, raster manipulation, and page composition.
Canva also says users can customize studios by combining panels and tools from these areas. Exact interface labels and locations can vary by operating system and release.
Is Affinity really free?
The core Affinity application is advertised as free forever. That is Canva’s stated business model, not a claim that every Canva-connected feature is free or that every future capability is guaranteed to remain free.
There are three separate points to understand:
- The professional core: Vector, Pixel, and Layout tools are presented as part of the free Affinity application.
- Account activation: Canva says existing users can activate Affinity and new users can create a free Canva account to download it. Do not assume that “free” means no account is involved.
- Canva AI: Canva Premium is the access route for selected AI tools inside Affinity, including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background.
In other words, someone can choose Affinity for free precision work without automatically subscribing to Canva Premium. Premium matters when the user wants Canva’s AI and related ecosystem features.

What does Canva integration add?
Affinity remains positioned as a professional design application, but it now sits inside Canva’s broader ecosystem.

Canva AI
Canva describes Canva AI Studio as an optional extension for Premium users. The core editing workflow is not presented as dependent on AI, so users who prefer manual vector, pixel, or layout work can avoid those tools.
Questions about whether AI processing is local or cloud-based, how long uploaded material is retained, and which account settings control data flow should be answered from current product documentation rather than assumed. Canva says creative work remains private and is not used to train its AI features; that is a vendor policy statement.
Exporting to Canva
Affinity projects can be exported into Canva for collaboration, scaling, or publishing. This could be useful when one person needs detailed control over an illustration or layout while a wider team needs Canva’s browser-based editing and distribution tools.
It does not make Affinity a web version of Canva. The central Affinity workflow is still the professional desktop application, while Canva is the collaboration- and publishing-oriented environment.
Before relying on a handoff, check what remains editable after export. A supported transfer does not automatically guarantee identical layers, fonts, effects, linked assets, or text behavior.
What happens to existing Affinity V2 users?
Existing V2 owners should not treat the new application as an automatic replacement without testing their own files. Contemporaneous reporting said purchased V2 software could continue to be used, but that should not be interpreted as an indefinite support guarantee.
Canva says the new app can open or import formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML, along with other formats. Format support is helpful for migration, but opening a file is not the same as perfect round-trip fidelity.

Before changing a production workflow, make copies of important projects and verify:

.afdesign,.afphoto, and.afpubfiles open as expected - Whether fonts are installed and render correctly
- Whether effects, blend modes, masks, transparency, and linked files survive import
- Whether text reflows or styles change
- Whether plugins, macros, brushes, assets, swatches, templates, and export presets migrate
- Whether PDF export preserves bleed, crop marks, overprint, CMYK profiles, and spot colours
- Whether V2 and the new Affinity can be installed side by side on the same machine
Keep the original files and the old V2 installation until representative projects have been checked. A file opening successfully is not proof that it will export identically or remain fully editable.
Which platforms are supported?
At launch, the unified Affinity application was available for macOS and Windows. Canva described the iPad version as “coming soon,” so the desktop and iPad experiences were not identical at launch.
Do not confuse the new unified iPad application with the older Affinity Designer 2, Photo 2, and Publisher 2 iPad apps. Users who work primarily on an iPad should confirm the current unified-app availability and feature set in Canva’s current download or App Store listing before making a platform decision.

Affinity is a credible alternative for overlapping professional workflows:

That makes Affinity an alternative to Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign for many individual tasks, but not automatically a complete replacement for Creative Cloud. Adobe may remain the safer choice for teams dependent on Adobe-native files, mature plugin ecosystems, enterprise administration, extensive cloud libraries, motion and video tools, or established agency workflows.
Affinity’s strongest proposition is different: a unified desktop production environment with professional vector, pixel, and layout tools and no mandatory subscription for the core application.

Affinity versus Canva
The two products overlap now, but they are designed around different priorities.

A designer might build or refine artwork in Affinity, then move it to Canva for collaboration, resizing, or publishing. Neither product should be described as a total substitute for the other.

- Freelancers: A strong fit if you want professional tools without a recurring fee for the core application.
- Illustrators and painters: Useful for combining scalable vector work with raster textures, retouching, and portfolio or print layouts.
- Photographers: Worth considering for RAW development, retouching, compositing, and batch workflows.
- Editorial and print designers: Attractive if your work depends on multi-page documents, master pages, styles, and typography.
- Small teams: Potentially useful when local production and Canva-based collaboration need to coexist.
- Existing V2 owners: Worth evaluating, but keep V2 and verify important projects, plugins, and exports before migrating.
- iPad-first users: Check the current unified iPad release and feature parity rather than relying on the desktop launch announcement.
- Enterprise teams: Be cautious if you require centralized administration, guaranteed Adobe compatibility, or a mature browser-first collaboration system.
Important limits to understand
“One app” does not mean one undifferentiated tool
Vector drawing, raster editing, and page layout still require different concepts and techniques. The unified interface reduces application switching; it does not make every tool equally suitable for every job.
“Free forever” is a stated business promise
Use the phrase as Canva uses it. It does not prove that every future feature, AI function, collaboration service, or V2 support policy will remain free indefinitely.
Compatibility needs testing
PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML support is not a guarantee of perfect fidelity. Missing fonts, unsupported effects, changed layer structures, colour-profile differences, and altered text flow can matter in professional production.
Account and privacy questions remain separate
Activation involves a Canva account, and Canva-connected features may involve online services. Users who need a completely local workflow should verify sign-in, offline launch, storage, AI connectivity, and data-handling behavior in the current release instead of inferring it from the “free” label.
Verdict
Affinity by Canva is a significant change for artists and designers: Designer, Photo, and Publisher are no longer presented as three separate core applications, but as Vector, Pixel, and Layout workspaces inside one free desktop platform.
It is most compelling for people who want precise local tools for illustration, photography, and publishing without paying a subscription for the basic application. Canva Premium is optional for the core workflow but relevant if you want integrated AI, collaboration, or Canva publishing. Adobe remains stronger for some ecosystem-heavy and enterprise workflows, while Canva remains stronger for browser-based templates and team distribution.
The practical conclusion is simple: Affinity is now a more capable free professional desktop suite, not a universal replacement for every Adobe or Canva workflow.
