In Affinity, layer effects add visual treatments such as shadows and glows, Styles save reusable object appearances, and Text Styles manage typography. They are related but distinct tools. The detailed panel paths below are for Affinity Designer 2; Affinity’s product branding and interface changed with the newer Affinity by Canva application, so labels and panel locations may differ by version and platform.

Effects, Styles, and Text Styles: what is the difference?

Feature What it does Typical contents What happens when you edit it
Layer effects (FX) Add a live visual treatment to a selected object or layer. Shadows, glows, blur, outline, bevel, overlays. You can adjust or disable the effect on that object. Save the appearance as a Style if you want to reuse it.
Styles Save and apply an object’s appearance as a preset. Depending on the selection, fill, color, transparency, and applied layer effects. Applying a Style is a reusable preset action. Do not assume that editing a saved visual Style updates every object that previously received it.
Text Styles Keep typography consistent across text. Font, size, spacing, paragraph settings, and character attributes. Editing a text style can update text that uses it, subject to any local formatting overrides.

The key distinction: use a visual Style for an object’s appearance, and a Text Style for repeatable typography. Affinity Designer 2 documentation describes the respective systems in its layer effects, Styles, and text styles guides.

Before you begin: select the right object and panel

Start with a document containing a selectable curve, shape, text object, or other layer. In the Designer 2 desktop workflow, the relevant panels are Layers, Effects, and Styles. Typography work may also use Text Styles, Character, and Paragraph.

If you are experimenting with a complex treatment, duplicate the object first or save a copy of the document. Keep the editable version if you later need to convert text to curves, rasterize an object, or prepare a format that may not preserve live appearance effects.

Affinity’s current product ecosystem is branded Affinity by Canva. Its April 2026 update describes the application as free to download, while the official support center still separates Version 2 support from newer product information. The detailed steps here use Designer 2 help, not a guarantee that every label or panel location is identical in the newer app, on iPad, or across desktop platforms. Affinity’s March 2026 update also describes interface and compositing changes.

How to apply a layer effect

  1. Select the object or layer in the document or Layers panel.
  2. Open the Effects panel, or use the effects control associated with the layer in Layers.
  3. Enable the checkbox beside an effect, then expand its controls.
  4. Adjust the available settings—such as opacity, radius, offset, blend mode, or color—while watching the canvas.
  5. Enable other effects if needed, then check the result at the intended output size.

In the documented Designer 2 workflow, a layer with effects displays an effects indicator beside its name in the Layers panel. The available effect family includes Gaussian Blur, Outer Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Outline, Bevel/Emboss, 3D Effect, Color/Colour Overlay, and Gradient Overlay. Spelling can vary with the interface language.

Choose an effect for the job

  • Outer Shadow: separates a card, icon, or lettering from its background.
  • Inner Shadow: suggests an inset or recessed surface.
  • Outer Glow: adds a halo for a light, neon, or emphasis treatment; Inner Glow softens or lights an interior edge.
  • Outline: adds a border without manually duplicating or expanding the object.
  • Bevel/Emboss: suggests raised or recessed depth, but can look heavy when pushed too far.
  • Gaussian Blur: softens an edge or creates atmospheric depth, at the cost of crispness.
  • Color/Colour Overlay and Gradient Overlay: change the rendered color treatment without rebuilding the underlying artwork.
  • 3D Effect: creates a stylized appearance; it is not a substitute for true 3D modeling.

There is no universally correct shadow offset or blur radius. The same settings can look restrained on a large title and overpowering on a small icon; judge the effect at the object’s size and intended output resolution.

Edit, disable, or remove an effect

Using the Effects panel

  1. Select the object or layer and open Effects.
  2. Expand the effect you want to change and adjust its controls.
  3. Uncheck the effect to disable it while retaining its configuration. Re-enable it later if needed.

Using the layer’s effects control

  1. Select the layer in Layers.
  2. Click its effects icon and choose an effect by name in the dialog.
  3. Adjust or disable that effect, then repeat for others as needed.

To remove an effect rather than temporarily disable it, use the effect’s removal control in the relevant interface; the exact control may vary by version. Flattening or rasterizing is a different, more destructive step: it can reduce editability and is not the first fix for an effect problem. Designer 2’s effects guide documents the panel and layer-control workflows.

Save an object’s appearance as a Style

A visual Style can include more than effects. For vector shapes and text, Designer 2 can save attributes such as fill, color, transparency, and applied layer effects. Save one after you have refined an appearance you expect to reuse.

  1. Apply and refine the appearance on a selected object.
  2. Open Styles. To keep a growing library organized, first create or select the intended category.
  3. Open the Styles panel’s preferences menu and choose Add Style from Selection. Depending on the interface, the object’s context menu may instead offer Create Style.
  4. Confirm that a thumbnail appears in the selected category.
  5. Apply the new Style to a different compatible vector object to check what it carries across.

A visual Style is an appearance preset, not automatically a linked design token. Treat each application as a starting point unless the exact version you use explicitly documents different behavior; do not expect a later change to the saved preset to synchronize every earlier use. See the Designer 2 Styles guide.

Apply a Style and refine it for the new object

  1. Select the target object or layer.
  2. Open Styles and choose the relevant category from its category menu.
  3. Click the Style thumbnail.
  4. Inspect the object’s fill, transparency, and effects, then adjust anything that does not suit the target.

For example, a card appearance saved with a noticeable shadow may suit a large panel but overwhelm a small icon. A Style transfers appearance settings, not a decision about the new object’s scale, shape, or background contrast. Make separate small- and large-object variants when that saves repeated adjustment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organize custom Style categories

Create categories before a preset library becomes difficult to search. Useful groupings include Brand, Buttons, Icons, Shadows, Editorial, and a client or project name. Keep production-ready presets separate from experiments.

  3. Use Rename Category when its purpose changes.
  4. Delete unused or duplicate Styles to keep the library manageable.

Create and use Text Styles

Text Styles are for typography, not glow, bevel, or shadow treatments. They can contain one or more text attributes and are intended to make repeated formatting consistent. Apply them through the Text Styles panel, Paragraph or Character panels, the context toolbar, or custom keyboard shortcuts, depending on the workflow. The Designer 2 text styles guide covers their use.

  1. Create or select artistic text or frame text, then set its typography.
  2. Open Text Styles and create a paragraph or character style appropriate to the selection.
  3. Name it for its role, such as H1, Body, Caption, Pull Quote, or Button Label.
  4. Apply it to other text that needs the same treatment.
  5. Edit the style definition when the system changes, then check for local formatting overrides if some text does not follow the update.

Paragraph, character, and group styles

  • Paragraph styles suit complete paragraphs: headings, body copy, lists, and captions.
  • Character styles suit inline formatting: a word, phrase, link, numeral, or emphasis within a paragraph.
  • Group styles organize a hierarchy and can provide a basis for other styles; they are not applied directly to page text.

For a larger system, a group style can act as a parent, with subordinate styles created using Create Style Based on. This lets related styles share a foundation while varying selected properties. Keep the hierarchy shallow enough to audit. The Designer 2 text-style types guide describes these types and the style hierarchy.

Apply effects to editable text

To add a shadow, glow, outline, or other visual treatment to lettering, apply the effect to the text layer and keep the text editable. Save the object appearance as a visual Style if you will reuse it. Use Text Styles separately for font and paragraph formatting.

Convert text to curves only when a production need calls for vector outlines. Conversion can remove ordinary text editing and text-style workflows; outlining text merely to add a shadow or glow is unnecessary.

Build a small, maintainable design system

For a practical starting library, save only the recurring treatments your work actually uses: perhaps a primary card, secondary card, icon, and button Style, alongside paragraph styles for heading, body, and caption and a character style for accent text. Keep the visual and typographic systems separate so a change to a heading’s font does not depend on a visual-effects preset.

Effects usually preserve more flexibility than manually duplicating and offsetting artwork. Duplicates remain useful when you need independently colored geometry, custom multi-layer lettering, a deliberate print-registration effect, or separate masking and blend-mode constructions.

Troubleshoot effects and Styles

An effect is missing or barely visible

  • Confirm the correct object or layer is selected and the effect checkbox is on.
  • Check that the object has a visible fill or stroke and that the effect color contrasts with the background.
  • Inspect visibility, masks, clipping, layer opacity, and blend mode.
  • Check the target layer level: an effect on a group may act on its composite appearance, while one on a child affects that child. A clipped or masked object can show a different result.

A Style applies but looks wrong

  • Compare the target’s size, fill, transparency, group structure, and background with the source object.
  • Inspect the applied effects and reduce radius, offset, or opacity as needed.
  • Save a separate variant when a recurring small object needs different settings from a large one.

A Style does not appear in the panel

  • Check that the intended category is selected and that the panel is showing it.
  • Make sure the object was selected when you chose Add Style from Selection.
  • Confirm that the Style was saved rather than merely applying or adjusting an effect.
  • If the command or panel is not where expected, check the app version and platform; Designer 2 labels may not match the newer interface.

Text does not follow a Text Style change

  • Verify that the text uses the intended paragraph or character style, rather than a visual Style.
  • Check for manual formatting applied after the style. A local override can make text differ from the style definition.
  • Confirm that the selected text and style type match the intended scope: paragraph formatting for a paragraph, character formatting for an inline range.

Check the result before export

Inspect effects at final pixel dimensions or print size, and check screen and print output separately. Pay particular attention to transparency, small text, and thin outlines. Live effects can affect rasterization at export, and vector export may not preserve every appearance treatment as native vector instructions. Check the behavior required by your PDF or SVG workflow rather than assuming every effect will remain editable or render identically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a large document becomes slow to redraw or export, temporarily disable the heaviest blur, glow, or 3D-style effects, work at a lower preview zoom, and simplify redundant stacks. If rasterization is necessary for a final deliverable, rasterize a duplicate or output copy and retain the editable source document.
