The AI action figure trend turns a photo into a digital image of a collectible toy sealed in retail-style packaging; it does not create a physical figure. You can make one with ChatGPT or Gemini by uploading a reference photo, describing the figure and package, then refining the result with targeted edits. For painters and illustrators, the image can also serve as a design reference to interpret and check.
What is the AI action figure trend?
An AI action figure image presents a person, pet, fictional character, or profession as a boxed collectible. Common elements include:
- a clear plastic blister pack;
- cardboard backing in a deliberate color scheme;
- a full-body figure posed inside the package;
- the subject’s name printed at the top;
- separate accessories in molded compartments; and
- studio lighting that makes the result resemble a product photograph.
The trend spread widely on social media in early April 2025, shortly after OpenAI released native image generation in GPT-4o on March 25, 2025. OpenAI described the model as capable of using uploaded images as references, following detailed instructions, and rendering text inside images. The model name is GPT-4o, with a lowercase letter “o”—not “GPT-40,” a common typo.

The output is normally a 2D digital image, not a 3D model, printed toy, or proof that a product exists. A physical figure would require separate 3D modeling, fabrication or printing, painting, and packaging.
How to make an AI action figure in ChatGPT
OpenAI’s Help Center lists ChatGPT Images 2.0 as the current image-generation feature and says it is available on all ChatGPT tiers through the web, iOS, and Android.
- Open ChatGPT and start a conversation.
- Describe the image directly, or choose More → Images.
- Use the attachment control to upload a clear reference photo.
- Enter a prompt describing the figure, package, clothing, accessories, and text.
- Review the generated image.
- Select the image to open the editor.
- Choose Select to highlight an area, or describe an edit in the editor’s text box.
- Select Save to download the result.
On mobile, select the generated image and choose Edit to describe a change or Select to highlight an area. After selecting an area, choose Next, describe the edit, and save the result.
ChatGPT prompt template
Use the uploaded photo as the reference for the person’s face, hair, skin tone, and overall appearance. Create a polished product photograph of a collectible action figure named “[NAME]” sealed in a clear plastic blister package on cardboard backing. Show the full figure standing upright inside the package, wearing [OUTFIT]. Place three separate accessories beside the figure: [ACCESSORY 1], [ACCESSORY 2], and [ACCESSORY 3].
Use a [COLOR] and [COLOR] packaging design. Put the exact text “[NAME]” at the top and “ACTION FIGURE” beneath it. Make the composition look like a premium toy-store product photo, with realistic molded plastic, soft studio lighting, clean edges, and a straight-on camera angle. Keep the packaging readable and do not add any other text, logos, or people.
OpenAI recommends short, direct prompts, usually one to three clear sentences. Add detail when you need a specific layout, material, lighting, or text constraint. For packaging text, quote the wording or use all caps, specify its placement, and keep it short. Spell an unusual name letter by letter if the generator repeatedly gets it wrong.

How to make one in Google Gemini
Google’s Gemini image-generation page lists turning photos into figurines as a supported use case.
- Open Gemini and open the tools menu.
- Select 🍌 Create images.
- Choose a model from the model menu. Google’s instructions list Fast, Thinking, and Pro options.
- Upload a reference image or enter a prompt.
- Generate the image.
- If eligible, open the three-dot menu and select Redo with Pro to regenerate with Nano Banana Pro. This option is available to eligible Google AI Pro, Plus, or Ultra users.
Gemini prompt template
Create an image of the person in the uploaded photo as a premium collectible action figure in a sealed transparent blister package. Preserve the person’s recognizable facial features, hairstyle, and general appearance. The figure should wear [OUTFIT] and stand beside three molded accessories: [ACCESSORY 1], [ACCESSORY 2], and [ACCESSORY 3].

Google recommends starting with a direct instruction such as “Create an image of” or “Generate an image of,” then identifying the subject, action, setting, style, quality, and aspect ratio. Make one change at a time after the first result instead of rewriting every instruction at once.
How to get a more convincing result
The first generation may contain practical errors: a cropped package, unreadable lettering, merged accessories, or a face that only loosely resembles the reference. Try a targeted follow-up instruction rather than starting over.

ChatGPT supports aspect ratios through its aspect-ratio picker or by specifying the ratio in a prompt. A full-body reference generally gives the model more information about clothing, proportions, and pose than a headshot. If you only have a portrait, describe the outfit and stance explicitly.

ChatGPT’s selection highlights are not always precise, so an edit may affect nearby areas. Repeated edits can also change the face, clothing, accessories, or package layout. Repeat the elements that must stay fixed and alter only one feature per revision.
Using the result as a painting reference
Treat an AI action figure image as a design sketch rather than an authority. Before painting from it, check the lighting, anatomy, reflections, and accessory shapes. AI-generated packaging may contain impossible plastic seams, inconsistent shadows, or lettering that could not physically fit on the card.
For a stronger reference, ask for a simple version first: a straight-on package, limited colors, three clearly separated accessories, and one light source. You can then develop the image in your own style, for example as:
- a portrait enclosed by painted blister-like highlights;
- a still life of brushes, palette knives, and paint tubes arranged as accessories;
- a fictional “artist edition” package with original typography; or
- a self-portrait presented as a boxed studio professional.
If you present the finished work publicly, describe it accurately as AI-assisted or AI-generated where that distinction matters. Do not imply that a physical toy was manufactured if it was not.

ChatGPT settings
On a personal ChatGPT account, turn off model-improvement use through Profile icon → Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone → Off. OpenAI says new conversations will then not be used to train its models, although they remain in chat history unless you delete them separately.
For a more private session, use Temporary Chat. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create memories, are not used for training, and are deleted from its systems after 30 days. They may still be reviewed for abuse monitoring.

Gemini settings
In Gemini, the relevant control is Keep Activity. On desktop, go to Gemini → Settings & help → Activity. When Keep Activity is on, chats and uploaded material such as photos may be saved in Gemini Apps Activity and may be used to improve Google services with human reviewers.
With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google may still retain chats for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect users.
Do not upload somebody else’s photograph without permission. Consent is especially important when the image depicts a child, coworker, client, private individual, or public figure.

Use an original name, color scheme, and package design rather than requesting an exact imitation of a real toy company’s logo, trademarked layout, or proprietary character. A generator’s ability to produce a familiar-looking package does not grant permission to use the underlying brand or character.
Generating an image of a celebrity or another person also does not automatically give you permission to publish or commercially use that person’s likeness. Consider consent and the rules of the platform where you intend to post the image.
Gemini-generated images include Google’s AI transparency measures, including an invisible SynthID watermark and a visible indication that the image was AI-generated, according to Google. Gemini’s verification tool can check whether SynthID is detected, but Google says it currently identifies content made by Google AI tools—not every image produced by every AI system.

OpenAI’s Help Center said the official DALL·E GPT was scheduled to retire on August 30, 2026. That date has passed; image creation and editing continue through ChatGPT Images. User-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected.
