AI music platforms do not offer one interchangeable kind of “ownership.” Before using a generated track in an illustration reel, animation, game, client video, or release, check what the platform grants for that track and plan, whether your intended use is covered, and what human contribution you can identify. A platform’s commercial-use license does not itself establish that an entirely AI-generated composition is copyrightable.
What Rights And Licensing Mean For An AI Track
Separate three questions: what the service lets you do under its terms; whether the output or parts of it qualify for copyright protection; and whether the track includes material that raises separate consent or rights concerns. A “commercial” or “royalty-free” label answers only what the provider says about its license, within the applicable terms.
The U.S. Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make a person the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work may be protected. Applicants registering a work containing more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution. For a visual project, keep a record of the track’s generation date, account plan, license or certificate, and the edits you made. If you materially composed, performed, or edited parts yourself, document those contributions. This is practical recordkeeping, not a determination that the result qualifies for copyright.

A Client Commission Or Ad
Confirm that the plan grants commercial use and that the license applies to the account generating the track. Eleven Music specifically describes licensed music for ads and branded content, while Loudly says commercial licensing is included; both still require checking the applicable plan terms. Save the relevant license evidence with the project handoff.

Check whether the platform permits release or monetization on the exact destination and under your plan. Prompts And Editing That Help You Keep A Clear Record
A prompt can establish your creative direction, but prompts alone do not make you the author under the Copyright Office guidance. For a short visual loop, for example, you might specify “quiet, low-energy instrumental bed for a slow watercolor process reel; sparse percussion, no vocals, gentle ending.” That is a workflow example, not a claim that a particular platform supports those controls or guarantees a result.
After generation, note the choices you made and any edits you performed. If the platform offers stems or editing, those features may help you fit music to scene timing, but do not assume that exporting stems or editing a track changes the license or determines copyrightability. Confirm both points in the service’s terms and save your project versions.

- Identify the intended use: personal portfolio, monetized social video, client work, advertising, streaming release, or game.
- Verify that the plan active at generation time permits that use, and review any platform, format, or distribution limits.
- Save the generation date, plan details, terms or license, and any certificate provided for the track.
- Keep a short record of your human-authored contributions, such as original lyrics, performance, arrangement, or substantial edits.
- Check consent and terms for any voice, cover, uploaded audio, or other source material before release.
- Review the destination platform’s disclosure and monetization requirements.
