Alexander McQueen’s estate was reported at £16 million in 2011 coverage of his will. That figure describes the late designer’s reported estate at the time—not a current net-worth estimate and not the value of the Alexander McQueen fashion house.

What was Alexander McQueen’s reported net worth?

The most widely reported figure in coverage of Lee Alexander McQueen’s will was £16 million. The Guardian described him as leaving a £16 million fortune in July 2011, while its report and British Vogue’s account focused on the will’s provisions. These are reports of an estate value, not a complete accounting or an independently recalculated net worth.

McQueen died in 2010; the £16 million figure appeared in reporting published in July 2011. The sources do not establish how the estate’s assets performed afterward or what they might be worth today. It is therefore more accurate to describe £16 million as the reported value of his estate in 2011 than as his present-day net worth. The Guardian’s report and British Vogue’s account detail the reported bequests.

Who received money under the reported will?

British Vogue reported that the majority of the estate went into a trust for Sarabande, the foundation associated with supporting emerging designers. McQueen reportedly wanted the trust to consider grants or bursaries for students at Central Saint Martins.

The same account listed bequests to family, household staff, charities and his dogs:

  • £250,000 for each of his three sisters and two brothers.
  • £50,000 for each of his two housekeepers.
  • £50,000 for his godson and for each niece and nephew.
  • £50,000 held in trust for his dogs.
  • £100,000 each for Blue Cross, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the London Buddhist Centre and Terrence Higgins Trust.

The Guardian separately reported the £50,000 provision for the dogs. These are reported terms of the will, not a full balance sheet of the estate; the coverage does not independently reconcile the individual bequests with the reported £16 million total.

Is the Alexander McQueen fashion house worth £16 million?

No. McQueen’s personal estate and the fashion business are different assets, and the 2011 estate figure is not a valuation of the house. Kering’s current house profile describes McQueen as a British luxury house founded in 1992 and identifies it as part of Kering’s portfolio. The profile provides brand and leadership context, not a standalone financial valuation.

The house continued after its founder’s death. In February 2010, Gucci Group, then the parent company, announced that it would continue the brand. Its president and chief executive, Robert Polet, said, “I believe strongly in the Alexander McQueen brand and its future.” Kering’s profile notes Sarah Burton’s appointment in 2010 and the change in creative direction to Seán McGirr in 2024.

A historical SEC filing says the 2001 Gucci Group arrangement gave the group a 51% stake and McQueen the remaining 49%. That is a record of the historical partnership, not evidence of today’s ownership split. The available corporate profile does not state a current standalone value for the house, so its value should not be inferred from the estate figure or the old ownership arrangement.

What does the £16 million figure leave unanswered?

Will reporting gives a useful snapshot of the estate and its intended beneficiaries, but it does not establish a present-day valuation. It does not provide a complete inventory of assets and liabilities, a later accounting of the trust, or a current estimate of McQueen’s personal wealth. Separately, the fashion house’s ongoing business does not make its corporate value interchangeable with his personal estate.
