Ai-Da, a humanoid robot art project, made an oil-on-canvas portrait of King Charles III titled Algorithm King. It was unveiled at the UK Mission to the UN and WTO in Geneva during the AI for Good Global Summit, July 8–11, 2025. The robot physically applied paint, but the portrait was the work of a human-led project—not an image made by an autonomous machine acting alone.
What is Algorithm King?
Algorithm King is a 2025 portrait of Charles III, listed by Ai-Da Robot as an oil painting on canvas. The image presents the king in a stylized, expressive manner rather than as a photorealistic likeness. Published descriptions note his smile and a flower in his buttonhole amid dense, colorful marks.
The work was presented in Geneva at the UK Mission to the United Nations and World Trade Organization during the 2025 AI for Good Global Summit. Ai-Da’s exhibition record gives the dates as July 8–11. This was a portrait of the king, not a confirmed royal commission or official royal image. Reports say Charles did not sit for it; Ai-Da worked from photographic references.

How did Ai-Da make the painting?
The reported process links three visible stages: cameras in Ai-Da’s eyes capture visual information; algorithms process or interpret it; and a robotic arm applies paint to the canvas. In shorthand:
Camera input → computational interpretation → robotic movement → oil paint on canvas

That describes the machine’s role, not the whole chain of authorship. Ai-Da was created by Aidan Meller and a multidisciplinary human team, whose work includes the robot’s design and development, software, operation, maintenance and public presentation. The available accounts do not spell out the full software pipeline for this portrait: they do not establish the model architecture, training data, how the reference photograph or composition was selected, how much human direction shaped the marks, or whether the finished canvas was retouched.
Meller has said Ai-Da selected Charles because of his leadership style and support for the arts and sustainability. That is a statement from the project’s creator, not independently verifiable evidence that the system formed an intention in the human sense. Descriptions such as “Ai-Da chose” are best understood as part of the project’s public framing unless more technical detail is supplied.

A royal pair—and an earlier auction record
Algorithm King follows Algorithm Queen, Ai-Da’s 2022 portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, made in connection with her Platinum Jubilee. The dates matter: the Queen portrait is from 2022; the Charles portrait is from 2025. Together, the titles set the machine-made image alongside the long tradition of royal portraiture, but neither title by itself establishes royal participation or approval.
Ai-Da’s profile also grew after A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing sold at Sotheby’s in 2024 for more than $1 million, in a sale widely reported as a record for work created by a humanoid robot. Published figures vary with currency conversion and the treatment of fees. That result belongs to the Turing portrait; it is not a price for Algorithm King, and the available information does not establish that the Charles portrait was sold.

Is it AI art, robot art or human-assisted art?
“Robot art” is concrete here: a robotic arm physically put paint on canvas. “AI art” is also common shorthand, but it can make the process sound like a single algorithm generated a finished picture by itself. In practice, the work combines sensing, software, a mechanical painting system and human project direction.

- As a technical demonstration, the portrait shows computation and robotics operating in a physical medium, where marks must be made with paint rather than rendered only on a screen.
- As a work of authorship, it raises a harder question: should credit belong to the robot, its engineers and operators, its project director, or the human–machine collaboration?
- As a cultural event, its Geneva unveiling placed a robot-made royal portrait within a summit focused on AI’s social and technological role. That setting gives the work public visibility; it does not settle its artistic status.
There are reasonable readings on both sides. Supporters may see Ai-Da’s embodied mark-making as a new form of creative collaboration. Skeptics may argue that the concept, engineering choices and curation are human, and that calling the machine an artist risks turning a project persona into a claim of independent agency. The middle ground is to recognize that the robot performs a meaningful part of the image-making while avoiding the unsupported claim that it worked without human involvement.

What remains unclear
Public accounts establish the broad process, medium, venue and dates, but do not answer several questions about this individual painting: the exact software and model used; the data on which any system was trained; how much people chose or adjusted the reference, composition, colors or movement; whether any human altered the canvas afterward; and who owns the copyright or holds permissions for reference imagery. Nor do the available reports confirm that Charles saw, approved or commissioned the portrait.
Those gaps matter because “made by a robot” can describe the physical act of painting without resolving who made the consequential creative decisions. Algorithm King is therefore best understood both as an oil portrait executed by a robot and as a human-led artistic project that deliberately tests the boundaries between machine action and human authorship. It makes the debate tangible; it does not settle whether a machine can be an artist on its own.
