Allianz presents AI as both a way to improve customer experience and productivity and a growing business risk. Its 2026 materials make that tension clear: Allianz Commercial ranked AI second among global business risks, while Allianz’s investor presentation urged the company to turn AI capabilities into productivity gains. Separately, Allianz announced management and board changes scheduled mainly for 2027; the company has not said those changes were driven by AI.

Is AI a risk or an opportunity for Allianz?

In Allianz’s public statements, it is both. The company describes AI as part of the business baseline and a potential aid to customer service and efficiency, while its commercial risk research records growing concern about AI’s consequences for businesses.

At a July 2026 media event, Allianz SE CEO Oliver Bäte called AI “not an add-on but the ‘baseline’ of the business,” presenting it as a catalyst for customer experience. That is a strategic ambition, not evidence that specific customer or financial results have already been achieved. Allianz’s account of the event emphasizes the role of people, governance and trust alongside the technology.

Why businesses see exposure as well as potential

Allianz Commercial’s Risk Barometer 2026 placed AI at number two among global business risks, up from number ten in its 2025 edition. Thirty-two percent of respondents selected AI as a business risk. The survey involved 3,338 risk-management experts from almost 100 countries and territories.

The ranking reflects the concerns of survey respondents; it is not a measurement of Allianz’s own AI losses or a forecast that AI will cause a particular amount of damage. Allianz Commercial’s Michael Bruch called AI “the big mover” in the 2026 barometer. Allianz Chief Economist Ludovic Subran said companies increasingly view AI as both a strategic opportunity and a source of operational, legal and reputational risk.

For a company operating in insurance and other financial services, the distinction matters: using AI may bring efficiency or service improvements, while adopting it also raises questions about implementation, governance, liability and the consequences of errors or misinformation. The public material establishes Allianz’s stated priorities and the survey’s risk ranking, but does not quantify a specific AI-related liability exposure for Allianz.

How is Allianz using AI in its strategy?

Allianz’s 2Q 2026 investor presentation puts AI within three broader priorities: smart growth, productivity and resilience. In the productivity section, it calls for translating AI capabilities into gains that can support affordability and growth. In its resilience discussion, it includes AI governance.

This is a strategic framing rather than a quantified account of AI’s contribution. The presentation does not isolate how much productivity, customer satisfaction or profit has resulted from AI. Allianz’s 2026 operating-profit target is €17.4 billion, plus or minus €1 billion, for the group as a whole; the company does not identify that figure as AI-driven. Allianz’s results and reports provide the company’s published financial materials.

Are analysts optimistic about Allianz’s AI strategy?

The available evidence is Allianz’s investor presentation, not an independent analyst consensus or a demonstrated market verdict on the company’s AI execution. The presentation includes a chart titled “Divergence of AI winners and losers,” showing total shareholder returns from January 2025 to June 2026 for groups perceived as AI “winners” and companies perceived to be “at risk.” It attributes the series to Bloomberg and UBS indices.

The chart illustrates the market framing Allianz chose to present; it does not establish that AI caused the returns or show that Allianz itself belongs to either group. The more direct statement of Allianz’s own position is its call to convert AI capability into productivity while treating governance as part of resilience. Whether those priorities deliver measurable results requires operating evidence beyond the chart.

What do Allianz’s leadership changes mean?

Allianz announced a series of executive portfolio and succession changes in 2026, with major changes scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. The announcements describe succession planning, retirement, changes in responsibilities and closer integration of capabilities—not an AI-driven reorganization.

Management portfolio changes announced in March

On March 12, 2026, Allianz said Tomas Kunzmann would join the Allianz SE Board of Management, Renate Wagner would take on an expanded regional remit, and Sirma Boshnakova would become responsible for Global Property & Casualty Retail. Klaus-Peter Röhler was scheduled to retire at the end of 2026 after reaching the age limit and the expiry of his mandate. The company noted that regulatory approvals would apply where relevant. Allianz’s March announcement sets out the planned changes.

Board size and responsibilities announced in July

On July 24, Allianz announced that Günther Thallinger’s Board of Management term would conclude on December 31, 2026, and that his responsibilities would be distributed. The board was planned to shrink from nine members to eight effective January 1, 2027. Kunzmann was also assigned Global Health and Sustainability (ESG), in addition to the Asia-Pacific responsibilities announced earlier.

Allianz attributed the smaller board to closer integration and efficiencies achieved over recent years. Bäte characterized the future board as combining “a deliberately lean structure and a broad range of experience, backgrounds, and perspectives.” These are the company’s stated rationale and CEO’s description, not independent assessments of the structure’s effectiveness. The July board announcement provides the details.

Subsidiary CEO appointments announced in October

On October 1, 2026, Allianz confirmed that Philipp Kroetz would become CEO of Allianz Partners on November 1, succeeding Kunzmann, and that Laurent Floquet would become CEO of Allianz Direct. These are subsidiary-level transitions within the wider succession story. Allianz’s October announcement describes the appointments.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Opportunity: Allianz presents AI as a route to better customer experience and productivity, with governance and trust as supporting priorities.
  • Exposure: Allianz Commercial’s survey shows AI rising sharply as a concern among risk professionals; that ranking is not a company-specific loss estimate.
  • Investor perspective: Allianz’s chart compares perceived market winners and at-risk companies, but does not prove AI caused the share-return differences.
  • Leadership: The 2026 announcements document planned succession and portfolio changes, including an eight-member board from January 1, 2027; they do not connect the changes to AI.
  • Financial outlook: The €17.4 billion, plus-or-minus €1 billion, operating-profit target is Allianz’s group target for 2026, not an estimate of AI’s contribution.
