Those details describe a historical article, not a current catalogue. Allwood Living’s later company material also describes custom-made furniture, extensive material and finish choices, and a kitchen lifetime guarantee subject to terms and requirements. Anyone considering a project now should verify availability, specifications, lead times and the exact written warranty before committing.
What the 2008 feature actually covered
The article was a short product-news item rather than a full kitchen catalogue, technical review or price guide. Its focus was visual presentation. Allwood Living was described as paying close attention to how a display kitchen looked, rather than treating the display unit as a purely functional sample.
Three design details carried most of the article’s message:
Recommended Free Tools
- Feature glass: glass was presented as a way to create visual interest in the display.
- Furniture lighting: lighting was used to add impact and draw attention to cabinetry and display areas.
- Glass splashbacks: splashbacks were described as a finishing touch to the kitchen design.
The article also referred to “full in house design services” and listed four finish examples: Tasman oak, antique white, whisper white and blackwood. It did not provide dimensions, hardware schedules, appliance specifications, prices, installation dates or performance testing.
That distinction matters. A finish named in a 2008 article is evidence that it was shown or offered at that time, not proof that the same colour, timber, supplier or formulation can be ordered today.

Finish options named in the article
| Finish named | What the historical source establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Tasman oak | Listed as one of the kitchen design finishes in the 3 March 2008 feature. | Current stock, veneer or solid-timber construction, colour variation, price or availability. |
| Antique white | Listed as a painted finish example in the feature. | Current paint system, sheen, colour match, cleaning guidance or touch-up policy. |
| Whisper white | Listed as a painted finish example in the feature. | Whether the historic colour remains in the present range or how it compares with current whites. |
| Blackwood | Listed as a timber finish example in the feature. | Current species supply, grain selection, board or veneer specification and cost. |
Use the names as a starting point for a design conversation. Ask for a current physical sample in the proposed coating and lighting conditions; a printed colour or an old photograph cannot show how a finish will look beside your floor, benchtop and appliances.
How the design language works
Display glass as a focal element
Feature glass can break up a long run of opaque doors and provide a place for crockery, glassware or decorative objects. Its effect depends on placement, transparency, frame detail and what is visible behind it. Before approving a layout, decide whether the cabinet will be neatly curated or used for everyday storage. Transparent doors expose clutter, while textured or obscured glass changes the balance between display and concealment.
The 2008 report does not identify a glass type, thickness, safety treatment, frame material or supplier. Those are specification decisions that must be documented in a current quotation. Confirm how the panels are retained, how they can be cleaned and what happens if a panel is damaged.
Furniture lighting inside the composition
The article treated furniture lighting as part of the visual design, not merely as a utility added after installation. Lighting inside or beneath cabinets can make display glass read as a feature and can provide useful task or ambient light. Generic LED cabinet lights are one possible category to discuss with a designer, but the article gives no brand, model, electrical requirement or installation detail and does not show that any particular product was used or endorsed.
Ask for a lighting plan that identifies the position of each fitting, the switch or dimmer controlling it, cable routes, access for replacement and the colour temperature proposed. Check the result at night as well as in daylight. A bright strip reflected in glossy doors can be distracting, while a fitting hidden behind a shelf may leave the work surface dark.

Glass splashbacks as the finishing layer
A glass splashback can provide a continuous, easy-to-wipe surface behind a cooktop or sink and can carry a colour through the room. Its success depends on accurate site measurement, cut-outs, edge treatment and coordination with cabinets, power points and appliances. None of those technical details appears in the historical feature, so they should be treated as current project specifications rather than assumed features of the old design.

What Allwood Living’s company material adds
Separate company material describes Allwood Living as making furniture in a south-east Melbourne factory and offering a broad selection of timbers, veneers, fittings, paints, stains, lacquers and oils. It says the business combines traditional and modern construction techniques, with strength and durability as goals.
That description supports a custom-furniture approach: the design can be developed around a room, selected materials and chosen fittings rather than limited to a fixed modular range. It does not, however, supply a current catalogue, construction drawings, test results or a universal specification for every kitchen. “Custom made” can cover many different substrates, joints, coatings and hardware packages, so the written proposal should identify exactly what is being supplied.
Oil and stain choices
An Allwood Living “What’s New” page says the company distributes Osmo oil products and has offered oil finishes, including coloured oils and stains. The page carries a ©2022 footer, and its availability information may no longer be current. Treat distribution, stock and promotions as items to confirm rather than as standing promises.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
For any oiled or stained timber, ask whether the finish is factory applied, how many coats are used, what maintenance is expected and whether future repairs can be blended. Painted cabinetry raises different questions: coating system, sheen, edge durability, colour matching and the procedure for touching up chips. The historical article does not answer these points.
Construction and durability questions to put in writing
Because the company material mentions both traditional and modern construction, ask the designer or manufacturer to describe the construction selected for your job in plain terms. Useful questions include:
- What are the cabinet carcasses, doors, drawer boxes and shelves made from?
- Which components are solid timber, veneer, painted board or another panel product?
- What joints, fixings and edge treatments are used?
- Which hinges, runners, lift mechanisms and handles are included?
- What load limits, adjustment provisions and replacement procedures apply to the hardware?
- How are moisture-prone areas near sinks, dishwashers and cooktops protected?
- Who measures the room and confirms walls, floors, services and appliance clearances?
The company’s stated goals of strength and durability are design intentions, not published performance results. Without a project-specific specification or test evidence, it is not possible to rank one named finish or construction method as objectively more durable from this material alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.The lifetime guarantee: what is and is not established
Allwood Living’s company material says its kitchens are custom made and that a lifetime guarantee applies. One company statement says: “We are 100% confident with the quality of our kitchens and couple them with a lifetime guarantee, something you will not find easily.” This is promotional language from the company, not an independent performance finding.
A separate company page states that terms and requirements apply. The detailed current terms were not available in the material reviewed, so the guarantee should not be treated as an unconditional promise. Before signing, obtain the complete document and check:

- who is covered: the original purchaser, a property owner or another party;
- what “lifetime” means and whether it is the lifetime of the original owner, the product or another defined period;
- which parts are included, such as cabinets, doors, coatings, hinges, runners and glass;
- what exclusions apply to normal wear, misuse, moisture, movement, accidental damage and maintenance;
- whether installation by an approved installer is required;
- how a claim is lodged, inspected and resolved;
- whether labour, removal, transport and reinstallation are included; and
- whether the guarantee transfers if the home is sold.
Keep the final plans, finish schedule, invoice, care instructions and guarantee terms together. If a salesperson describes broader protection than the written document, ask for that promise to be added to the contract.
A practical process for planning a comparable kitchen
- Record the room. Measure walls, ceiling height, windows, doors, plumbing points, electrical outlets and appliance locations. Treat these as preliminary until a professional site measure confirms them.
- Define how the kitchen will be used. List daily cooking, entertaining, storage and accessibility needs. Decide which items should be concealed and which deserve display treatment.
- Choose a finish direction. Compare timber or veneer character with painted or stained surfaces using current samples. View them beside the benchtop, flooring, wall colour and hardware.
- Place visual features deliberately. Mark the proposed feature-glass doors, lighting zones and splashback extent on the elevation drawings. Check sightlines from entrances and adjacent rooms.
- Specify the build. Require the quote to name boards, veneers, timber species, coatings, hardware, glass and installation responsibilities rather than relying on a general “custom kitchen” description.
- Check services and sequencing. Confirm who coordinates electrician, plumber, appliance supplier, splashback measurement and final installation, and identify what must be complete before each trade attends.
- Review the contract and guarantee. Match the drawings and finish schedule to the quote, record every allowance and read the full warranty terms before paying a deposit.
- Approve samples and shop drawings. Sign off door profiles, handles, glass, lighting positions, colours and junction details. Keep the approved set for handover and future repairs.
How to compare design directions without overstating the evidence
| Decision area | Questions to compare | Evidence available from the historical material |
|---|---|---|
| Timber or veneer versus painted or stained finish | How will grain, colour variation, repairs, cleaning and future refinishing affect the household? | The article names timber and painted examples; it provides no comparative durability or maintenance results. |
| Feature glass | Is the cabinet for display, everyday storage or both? What glass, frame and safety specification is proposed? | Feature glass is identified as a visual-impact element; technical details are not stated. |
| Furniture lighting | Where are fittings, switches, drivers and access panels located? Will glare or heat be an issue? | Lighting is mentioned as part of the display presentation; products and electrical specifications are not stated. |
| Glass splashback | What colour, thickness, cut-outs, edge finish, fixing method and cleaning instructions apply? | It is described as a finishing touch; installation and performance specifications are not stated. |
| Construction approach | What materials, joints, hardware and moisture protections are included in this project? | The company describes traditional and modern techniques and durability goals, but supplies no project-level test data here. |
| Warranty | What is covered, for how long, under which conditions and with what claim process? | A lifetime kitchen guarantee is stated by the company, with terms and requirements applying; the current detailed terms are not verified. |
What a current buyer should verify before relying on the old article
Start by asking whether the four named finishes and the described glass and lighting treatments are still available. Then request current samples, a measured design, a detailed specification and a written installation scope. Confirm the factory or workshop responsible for the work, expected lead time, deposit and progress-payment schedule, delivery conditions and process for variations.
Do not assume that a photograph or display unit represents the exact construction of your kitchen. Display cabinetry can use upgraded hardware, special lighting or decorative elements that are not included in a standard quotation. Every visible feature should be identified as included, optional or excluded.
Finally, obtain the current guarantee terms before ordering. The available company statements establish that a guarantee has been claimed and that conditions apply; they do not establish the present eligibility rules, exclusions or remedy for a particular project.
Bottom line
The 3 March 2008 Architecture & Design article is useful as a snapshot of Allwood Living’s design presentation: custom kitchen planning, feature glass, furniture lighting, glass splashbacks and four named finish examples. Later company material broadens the picture to custom-made furniture, numerous material and coating choices, and a stated kitchen lifetime guarantee subject to terms. It does not provide today’s catalogue, prices, technical specifications or verified warranty conditions. Use the article for design inspiration, then make every current choice through samples, drawings, a complete specification and the written contract.
