Altered thrift-store art starts with a secondhand painting or print and adds a new painted element that changes how its scene reads. The most engaging examples let the found image and the intervention share the frame: sometimes the new detail is a quiet extension; sometimes it is a playful intrusion. Here are a few approaches worth seeking out, plus a way to make your own.
What makes altered thrift art work?
The pleasure is in the conversation between two images: the composition already on the canvas or paper, and the idea an artist brings to it. A conventional landscape can become a setting for a familiar fictional character; a small addition can redirect the mood without erasing the painting that was there first.
That balance is personal. Look at how much of the original remains visible, whether the new subject feels humorous or nostalgic, how closely its paint style fits the scene, and whether the artist uses open space or works into existing details. A restrained addition can keep the source image legible. A more conspicuous insertion can make the contrast the point.

Artists and approaches to look for
Dave Pollot: pop culture inside the original aesthetic
Dave Pollot describes finding unwanted artwork and adding his own touch—most often pop-culture parodies—to bridge classic and pop art. His stated aim is not simply to paste a reference onto a picture, but to shift its meaning while retaining its aesthetic. As he explains on his official site, the idea began as a joke with his wife and grew into a question: “Could I take a piece of unwanted art, and without changing its aesthetic, change its meaning by painting into it some bit of pop culture/nostalgia and make it desirable in the modern world?”
That approach is especially satisfying when the added subject seems to belong to the scene at a glance, then reveals the joke on closer inspection.

David Irvine: matching the hand of the found painting
A 2014 Guardian feature on David Irvine describes him adding figures such as Darth Vader and Pac-Man to conventional thrift-store scenes. Irvine said, “I put a lot of effort into matching my style to the original painting.” The result depends on the new subject and the old image seeming to occupy the same painted world, even when the subject itself is unexpected.
This is a different pleasure from a deliberately obvious collage-like contrast: the closer the style match, the more the viewer may need a second look to spot what changed.

Bobert York: one-of-a-kind found compositions
HomeGrown Decatur’s feature on Bobert York presents his one-of-a-kind altered thrift art made from secondhand paintings. It also offers a useful starting point for browsing: framed paintings with open space can leave room for a new element without crowding the original composition. That is a practical suggestion, not a rule; a busy picture may be exactly the right partner for an intervention that responds to its details.
How to choose a painting to alter
- Find a scene with something to answer. Browse thrifted landscapes, portraits, or other framed images. Notice an empty stretch of sky, a doorway, a shoreline, or another feature that could make space for an added idea.
- Decide what must stay. Choose which parts of the original composition you want viewers to keep noticing. This helps you judge the scale and placement of the new subject.
- Choose the relationship. Decide whether your addition should blend into the original style, play against it, or sit somewhere between those extremes. A pop-culture reference can be funny because it is recognizable, but the surrounding scene is what makes its placement feel specific.
- Check the surface before painting. A painted canvas, a paper print, glazing, and a frame are different materials. Select a paint and technique appropriate to the surface you intend to alter; do not assume a coating or preparation used for one material will suit another.
- Make the addition in keeping with your plan. Paint and brushes are basic materials used in upcycling projects, but the appropriate supplies depend on the object. Goodwill’s dresser-upcycling tutorial lists paint and paint brushes among its supplies; because it concerns furniture, its full supply list and finish should not be treated as a recipe for canvas or paper artwork.
Where to find materials
A secondhand painting is one possible starting point; reusable art and craft materials may also be available through creative reuse stores. Arts and Found describes accepting and selling clean, reusable materials, including community donations and locally sourced items. Its availability and inventory are local and can change, so check what is offered near you.
