In 2018, Amazon printed QR-style SmileCodes on some shipping boxes. Customers who scanned one with the Amazon app could open craft instructions and videos, including a cutout dinosaur project. The campaign was selective—not every box had a code—and available sources do not confirm that SmileCodes are still in use.
What were Amazon SmileCodes?
SmileCodes were Amazon-branded, QR-style codes with the company’s smile mark in the center. Scanning a code in the Amazon app could take a customer to digital content; the destination could vary, from product pages to videos. TechCrunch described Amazon testing the codes in European pop-up shops and Amazon Lockers before a U.S. magazine debut expected in February 2018. How did the box craft campaign work?
In May 2018, Amazon put SmileCodes on some shipping boxes. Customers could scan a code with the Amazon app to reach craft instructions and videos. GeekWire reported that Amazon planned eight videos and projects for selected customers around the country; examples included a cutout dinosaur craft and a whimsical 360-degree galaxy video. How were SmileCodes different from Amazon’s 2020 Halloween box?

The Halloween activity was a separate box experience, not evidence that SmileCodes continued after 2018. Amazon described it in its October 2020 announcement.

What can you make from an Amazon box now?
Amazon’s current packaging-reuse guidance suggests using cardboard boxes and paper packaging as craft materials. It supports the general idea of reusing a box for a project, but it does not say SmileCodes are currently printed on deliveries or provide a SmileCodes scanning service. For a simple cardboard craft, reuse a clean box and paper filler; scissors or basic cardboard craft tools may help, but Amazon’s guidance does not require a purchase or specify a tool.
