Antique Pattern Library is a free online archive of scanned historical craft publications—not a pattern shop. Its catalog includes crochet, knitting, tatting, embroidery, needle lace, sewing, and other crafts. You can browse for a particular publication or craft, then check the scan’s instructions and reuse notice before using it.
What is Antique Pattern Library?
The project preserves scans of historical craft books, magazines, and articles as PDFs. The official site identifies it as part of New Media Arts, Inc., a nonprofit organization. The archive is useful when you want to explore period patterns or consult an older publication, but it is not presented as a source of modern, standardized patterns.
The catalog includes works such as an 1848 booklet on knitting, netting, and crochet; a 1915 Cluny lace manual; early twentieth-century Irish crochet motif publications; embroidery and cross-stitch chart books; and later knitting and sewing publications. How to find a pattern or publication
- Open the catalog and browse its alphabetical listings by author or title.
- Use your browser’s find function to search the catalog page for a craft, author, or publication name.
- Read the catalog record before opening a PDF. Records may include a work’s contents, publication date or approximate date, page count, donor, and scan editor.
- Open the scan and inspect the relevant pages for the pattern, diagrams, materials, and any file-specific reuse notice.
Searching by a specific craft and publication name can help narrow the catalog—for example, “crochet,” “Cluny lace,” or “cross-stitch.” Catalog descriptions can help you choose a scan, but they do not guarantee complete instructions, modern sizing, or beginner-friendly guidance.

What to check before starting a historical pattern
Older publications may use period techniques, terminology, or materials. Some catalog entries are described as intended for advanced crocheters or experienced knitters, and the catalog notes that some instructions are sketchy. Before gathering tools or supplies, read the complete pattern and examine any charts or illustrations. Follow the individual pattern’s directions rather than assuming a present-day tool size or material will match.
- Confirm that the scan includes all relevant pages and diagrams.
- Check whether the pattern specifies a skill level or assumes familiarity with a technique.
- Look for materials and tool descriptions that may differ from modern conventions.
- Assess whether the instructions provide enough detail for your experience level.
Can you copy or reuse the scans?
Antique Pattern Library says the books it scans are now in the public domain, while also stating that the scans are copyrighted by their owners or scanners. Its posted terms allow copying, distribution, and derivative works subject to conditions: users must attribute the original publication and clearly identify the applicable license, and they may not sell copies of the scans. The site states, “You do not have permission to sell these copies in any format.”

Check the notice attached to the specific file before reusing it. A representative scan notice for Plain and Ornamental Lettering says: “You may share copies or printouts of this scan freely. You may not sell copies or printouts.” Rights and conditions can differ by scan and jurisdiction; the library’s general terms are not a determination of the status of every underlying work everywhere.
