Hard light berasal dari sumber yang tampak kecil dibandingkan subjek, sehingga menghasilkan bayangan bert tepi tajam, kontras tinggi, tekstur kuat, dan highlight specular yang jelas. Soft light berasal dari sumber yang tampak besar, lebih dekat, atau terdifusi; bayangannya beralih perlahan dan cahaya terasa membungkus subjek. Jadi, ukuran sumber relatif terhadap subjek—bukan sekadar tingkat kecerahan—menentukan keras atau lembutnya cahaya.
Perbedaan utama hard light dan soft light

Mengapa ukuran sumber lebih penting daripada kecerahan

Difusi menyebarkan cahaya

Cara mendapatkan soft light di rumah atau studio
- Gunakan jendela besar. Tempatkan subjek dekat jendela agar bidang cahaya yang terlihat dari posisi subjek menjadi besar. Tirai tipis dapat menambah difusi.
- Pasang softbox atau diffuser. Letakkan kain diffuser di depan lampu. Dekatkan softbox selama ukurannya tetap mencakup subjek dan Anda masih mendapatkan pencahayaan yang diinginkan.
- Isi sisi bayangan. Tempatkan reflektor putih atau perak di sisi berlawanan dari jendela atau sumber utama. Reflektor mengembalikan sebagian cahaya ke sisi gelap; panduan UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Lighting Tips membahas penempatan ini.
- Periksa tepi bayangan. Lihat bayangan di bawah hidung, dagu, atau objek. Jika batasnya masih jelas, perbesar sumber tampak, dekatkan sumber, atau tambahkan difusi.
Cara membuat hard light dengan sengaja
- Gunakan matahari langsung atau LED kecil tanpa diffuser; keduanya cenderung membentuk bayangan keras.
- Jauhkan sumber kecil dari subjek untuk mengurangi ukuran tampaknya.
- Arahkan sumber dari samping untuk membentuk bayangan grafis dan menonjolkan tekstur.
- Gunakan latar sederhana agar garis bayangan dan highlight menjadi bagian komposisi, bukan gangguan.
Softbox atau reflektor: mana yang dipilih?
Keduanya memiliki fungsi berbeda. Softbox atau diffuser mengubah kualitas sumber utama dengan memperbesar dan menyebarkan bidang cahaya. Reflektor tidak membuat sumber utama lebih besar; ia hanya mengisi sisi bayangan dengan pantulan. Pilih softbox saat tepi bayangan terlalu tajam. Pilih reflektor saat kualitas sumber sudah sesuai tetapi kontras sisi gelap masih berlebihan. Keduanya dapat dipakai bersama.

Ukuran sumber menentukan seberapa keras atau lembut transisi bayangan, sedangkan arah sumber menentukan letak bayangan dan highlight. Sumber besar dari samping tetap menghasilkan bayangan lembut di sisi berlawanan; sumber besar dari depan memberi pencahayaan yang lebih merata. Karena itu, atur ukuran atau difusi terlebih dahulu, lalu ubah sudut untuk mengontrol bentuk wajah dan posisi pantulan.

Memilih kualitas cahaya berdasarkan tujuan
Untuk portrait yang ramah dan serbaguna
Mulailah dengan jendela besar atau softbox dekat kamera, kemudian tambahkan reflektor di sisi berlawanan bila bayangan terlalu gelap. Periksa pantulan di mata dan tekstur kulit sebelum memotret seluruh rangkaian.
Untuk portrait dramatis atau karakter
Pilih sumber kecil atau matahari langsung dari samping. Biarkan sebagian wajah masuk bayangan dan gunakan latar yang tidak mengganggu garis kontras.

Troubleshooting cepat
- Bayangan terlalu tajam: dekatkan sumber, gunakan softbox atau diffuser yang lebih besar, atau pindahkan subjek lebih dekat ke jendela.
- Wajah terlalu datar: geser sumber ke samping agar arah cahaya membentuk volume; jangan hanya menaikkan kecerahan.
- Sisi gelap terlalu pekat: tambahkan reflektor putih atau perak di sisi berlawanan dari sumber utama.
- Tekstur kulit terlalu menonjol: gunakan sumber yang lebih besar atau lebih terdifusi, lalu evaluasi kembali sudut cahayanya.
