First, test the Apple Pencil in Apple Notes with the iPad unplugged. If it still skips there, work through compatibility, charging, the Pencil tip, the screen, pairing, and hardware in that order. Skipping is not always a Bluetooth problem: a loose tip, screen protector, app bug, charger, damaged digitizer, or failing Pencil can produce the same symptom.
What Apple Pencil skipping looks like
The problem may appear as missing sections in a continuous stroke, delayed ink, random dots or lines, input that works only with extra pressure, or brief losses of contact. Notice when it happens:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- In one app or every app
- Only while the iPad is charging
- In one fixed area of the screen
- At one Pencil angle or rotation
- With a particular tip or brush
- Even though the Pencil remains paired
Those distinctions determine which fix is most likely to help.

Quick checklist
- Confirm that the Pencil and iPad are compatible.
- Check the Pencil’s battery and charge it correctly.
- Tighten, clean, or replace the tip.
- Clean and dry the display.
- Remove the case and screen protector temporarily.
- Test in Apple Notes or Freeform.
- Unplug the iPad and test again.
- Restart the iPad.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then re-pair the Pencil.
- Update iPadOS and the affected app.
- Test another charger and, if possible, another compatible iPad.
- Contact Apple if the fault persists.
1. Confirm Apple Pencil compatibility
Check the exact iPad model and Pencil generation before troubleshooting or buying anything. Apple Pencil models are not interchangeable across all iPads, and a USB-C port does not mean that every USB-C Pencil is supported.
Apple’s current compatibility table lists supported combinations and minimum software versions. Apple Pencil Pro requires supported iPad models and iPadOS 17.5 or later; Apple Pencil (USB-C) requires supported models and iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. The iPad (10th generation) and iPad A16 require the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter when using Apple Pencil (1st generation).
Also note that some newer iPad Pro models require Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (USB-C), while an Apple Pencil 2 that works with an older iPad Air or iPad Pro may not work with the newer model.
2. Check that the Pencil is charging
Look for the Pencil’s battery level in the Batteries widget or in Bluetooth settings. Use the correct charging method:
- Apple Pencil Pro or Pencil (2nd generation): attach it to the iPad’s magnetic charging edge.
- Apple Pencil (USB-C): connect it with a USB-C cable. Its magnetic attachment is for storage, not charging.
- Apple Pencil (1st generation): connect it through its Lightning connector, or through the required USB-C adapter on compatible USB-C iPads.
If the Pair button does not appear, Apple says to leave the Pencil connected for about one minute so it can charge, then try again. A very old or deeply discharged Pencil may have battery failure rather than a pairing problem.
3. Tighten the Pencil tip
A loose tip can cause intermittent input, lag, or no ink at all. Stop writing, unscrew the tip counterclockwise, inspect the threads and contact area, then reinstall it clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten it.
Test with light and normal pressure. If the problem changes when you tighten the tip, the tip was a strong suspect. Goodnotes also identifies a loose tip as a possible cause of laggy or absent inking.

4. Clean or replace a worn tip
Replace the tip if it is flat, chipped, cracked, bent, coated with dirt or adhesive, or works only at certain angles. Clean it gently before replacing it, and use a genuine Apple tip for diagnosis because third-party tips can differ in fit, friction, and durability.
Apple’s four-pack of replacement tips is listed as compatible with Apple Pencil Pro, Pencil (2nd generation), Pencil (USB-C), and Pencil (1st generation). The U.S. Apple Store showed a $19 price on August 16, 2026; prices and availability vary by country and can change.

- Compatible with Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil (1st generation)

5. Clean and dry the iPad screen
Turn off the display and wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Remove fingerprints, moisture, dust, grit, and cleaning-product residue, especially around the area where the tip touches the screen.
Do not spray liquid directly onto the iPad, use abrasive materials, or press hard while cleaning. A dirty or wet screen is a low-risk possibility, not a guaranteed explanation.
6. Remove the case and screen protector temporarily
Test with the case, magnetic folio, and screen protector removed if practical. A case can prevent reliable magnetic alignment for Apple Pencil Pro or Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple specifically recommends removing cases or covers when those models will not pair.
A screen protector can also change friction or affect input in some setups, but not every protector causes skipping. The useful test is temporary removal or trying the same Pencil on another compatible iPad.
7. Test Apple Notes or Freeform
Open Apple Notes, create a blank note, select the drawing tool, and draw slow horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and circular lines. Repeat with light and normal pressure. Freeform is another suitable system-level test.
- Works in Notes but not another app: investigate that app’s brush, palm-rejection, stabilization, document complexity, or compatibility.
- Skips in every app: suspect the tip, screen, Pencil, pairing, charging environment, or iPad hardware.
- Skips in one screen region: investigate the display or digitizer.
- Only one brush skips: the brush engine or app settings are more likely than the Pencil.
8. Restart the affected app
If the issue is limited to Procreate, Goodnotes, Notability, Photoshop, or another app, save the document, close the app from the app switcher, and reopen it. Test a new blank document and a simpler brush.
Then update the app through the App Store. A large canvas, many layers, complex brush, or background process can make ink appear late without the Pencil actually losing contact. Do not delete an app until its documents are backed up or synchronized.
9. Stop using the iPad while it charges
Disconnect the iPad from power and test again. Some users and third-party support sources report skipping, random lines, or interference while charging. Goodnotes recommends testing without charging when random lines appear.
If the issue disappears on battery power, test:
- A different cable
- A different power adapter and outlet
- No USB hub or dock
- A non-metallic surface
- No nearby chargers or other connected accessories
This is a diagnostic test, not proof that every charger causes Pencil skipping.

10. Restart the iPad
A normal restart can clear temporary app, Bluetooth, and input states. Use the standard shutdown and restart controls for your iPad model.
If the iPad is frozen, use Apple’s current model-specific force-restart instructions rather than applying one button sequence to every iPad. Apple’s Pencil pairing guidance also recommends restarting the iPad while the Pencil is connected, then trying to pair again.
11. Toggle Bluetooth and re-pair the Pencil
First open Settings → Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. Then reattach or connect the Pencil using its correct pairing method.
If that does not help, use Apple’s official re-pairing sequence:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth.
- Find Apple Pencil under My Devices.
- Tap the information button.
- Tap Forget This Device.
- Reconnect the Pencil magnetically, by USB-C cable, or through Lightning and the required adapter.
- Tap Pair when it appears.
If Pair does not appear, leave the Pencil connected for about one minute and try again. Forgetting the Pencil does not erase Notes documents. Avoid resetting network settings unless ordinary re-pairing fails; a network reset removes saved Wi-Fi and other network configuration.

12. Update iPadOS and the affected app
Go to Settings → General → Software Update and install an available iPadOS update. Also update the affected app in the App Store.
Do not assume that an online report about a recent iPadOS update proves a universal Pencil bug. Software behavior can be version- and app-specific.
13. Let an overheated iPad cool
If the iPad feels unusually hot, stop charging and intensive work, close demanding apps, move it out of direct sunlight, and temporarily remove a thick case. Let it return to normal temperature before testing again.
Heat can affect general responsiveness, charging, and app performance. It is a reasonable diagnostic step, not a confirmed Apple Pencil-specific defect.

14. Check accessibility and app settings
Review settings that can change input behavior, including:
- Zoom
- Touch Accommodations
- Palm rejection
- Pressure or smoothing controls
- Brush stabilization
- Hover-related settings on supported iPads
Change one setting at a time and record its original value. Some secondary troubleshooting coverage, including iDownloadBlog’s guide, reports disabling Zoom as a possible troubleshooting measure. That does not establish Zoom as a universal cause.
15. Check for a localized screen problem
Draw a slow grid across the entire display. If strokes fail consistently in one physical region, remove the case and protector, clean the screen, and compare finger touch in the same area.
A failure that follows the display area is more suspicious for the screen or digitizer than for Bluetooth or the Pencil battery. This is a diagnostic inference, not a definitive repair test.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →16. Test the Pencil on another compatible iPad
This is one of the strongest isolation tests. Use an iPad that Apple explicitly lists as compatible with that Pencil model.
- The Pencil skips on two compatible iPads: suspect the Pencil or its tip.
- Two Pencils skip on one iPad: suspect the iPad, display, software, or charging environment.
- The Pencil works elsewhere: investigate the original iPad, its compatibility, screen, case, protector, and software.
Testing on an incompatible iPad produces a meaningless failure result.
Diagnose the symptom
It skips only in one app
Test Notes or Freeform, create a blank document, restart and update the affected app, and try a simpler brush. The likely causes are app settings, a brush engine, document complexity, or an app bug.
It skips only while charging
Change the cable, adapter, outlet, and charging surface. Remove hubs and accessories. If the problem disappears only when unplugged, replace or isolate the charging setup before replacing the Pencil.
It produces random lines or dots
Clean the screen and tip, test without charging, remove the case and protector, and reduce nearby electronics. Moisture, palm rejection, tip contamination, or power-related interference can all be involved.

It skips in one strip of the screen
Test without the protector and case, compare finger touch, and try another Pencil. If the fault remains fixed to that area, arrange iPad service rather than buying another Pencil first.
It works only at one angle
Inspect and tighten the tip, then try a genuine replacement tip. If the behavior remains, suspect Pencil sensor damage, tip damage, or a screen-surface problem.
The Pencil will not appear in Bluetooth
Verify compatibility, charge level, Bluetooth, the correct connection method, and any required adapter. Remove magnetic cases, restart the iPad, forget the Pencil, and reconnect it.
When should you replace the tip, Pencil, or iPad?
Replace the tip first when it is worn, loose, chipped, contaminated, or angle-sensitive. It is the cheapest and least disruptive hardware test.
Consider replacing the Pencil only when it remains faulty after a genuine replacement tip, charging, re-pairing, app isolation, and testing on another compatible iPad. An old first-generation Pencil may have battery aging that causes charging, pairing, and intermittent-use problems.
Arrange iPad service when multiple compatible Pencils fail on the same iPad, the fault follows one screen region, or the display has physical damage.
Do not confuse feature differences with skipping. Apple Pencil (USB-C) supports tilt sensitivity, but Apple’s product page does not list pressure sensitivity for that model. Pressure-sensitive drawing may therefore behave differently from a Pencil model that supports pressure input.

Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider when the Pencil is compatible, charged, re-paired, and tested with a clean or replacement tip, yet still skips in Notes and other apps while the iPad is unplugged.
Escalate sooner if there is visible damage, unusual heat, swelling, persistent battery failure, or a suspected screen or digitizer fault. Do not attempt to replace an Apple Pencil battery yourself. Apple’s safety documentation warns that doing so can cause damage, overheating, and injury.
