What is the Aptos font?

Aptos is a sans-serif typeface designed by Steve Matteson for Microsoft. Microsoft describes it as its new default Office font, replacing Calibri. The family includes styles from Light through Black, along with Display and Condensed styles.

Microsoft lists Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, and Vietnamese language support. The typography page also lists files such as Aptos.ttf, Aptos-Bold.ttf, Aptos-Italic.ttf, Aptos-Display.ttf, Aptos-Narrow.ttf, Aptos-Mono.ttf, and Aptos-Serif.ttf, along with additional styles. See Microsoft’s Aptos typography page for the family description and files.

What does Aptos version 4.40 mean?

Version 4.40 is the version listed for Microsoft’s downloadable ZIP package. It identifies the package, not a separate typeface named “Aptos 4.40.” The Microsoft Download Center page is the source for the package version, date, file name, and size.

Install Aptos on Windows or Mac

  1. Download the ZIP from the Microsoft Download Center.
  2. Extract the ZIP archive.
  3. On Windows, open a font file in Font Previewer and choose Install.
  4. On macOS, open an extracted TTF or OTF file and install it through Font Book.
  5. Reopen the application where you want to use Aptos and check that the font is available.

Microsoft’s custom-font installation guidance explains the Windows and macOS steps. The Download Center lists Windows 10, Windows 11, Mac OS X, and systems that support TrueType or OpenType fonts.

Do Microsoft 365 users need to install Aptos manually?

Not necessarily. Microsoft says Aptos is available within Office applications. The standalone ZIP is for local installation, particularly in applications without access to the Office Font Service.

Situation What to consider
The target application has access to Aptos through Office A separate local installation may not be necessary for that application.
The target application does not have access to the Office Font Service Use the Microsoft ZIP and install the extracted fonts locally.
You are sharing a document Check whether the recipient’s computer has the font; otherwise the document may not display the same way.

Microsoft states that locally installed fonts are used by applications instead of versions supplied through the Office Font Service. For details about availability, see Microsoft’s Aptos page and Download Center listing.

Share documents that use Aptos

A font installed on your computer may not be present on the recipient’s computer, so a Word, PowerPoint, or Excel file may not look the same there. Check the recipient’s font availability and consult Microsoft’s guidance about embedding or distributing fonts when sharing files.

Microsoft’s Aptos typography page links to separate licensing and redistribution resources. Do not assume that a free download grants permission to redistribute, host, convert, or embed the font for every purpose. Review Microsoft’s terms for the specific use you have in mind.
