Artilux’s ALLEGRO is a track-guided pleated screen, while its retractable screens roll into a cassette. That mechanical difference determines how far the screen can open, what remains visible around the opening, and whether a concealed wall cavity is practical. Artilux presents both as measured and installed systems rather than universal, off-the-shelf kits, so the opening’s dimensions, geometry and construction stage should be assessed before specifying one.

How the two screen mechanisms differ
The most important distinction is what happens to the mesh when you open the screen. Artilux says the ALLEGRO™ pleated screen travels along tracks, folding into concertina-like pleats at the side. Its retractable systems use mesh that rolls into a spring-loaded cassette when the opening is clear. These are different operating experiences, not merely two appearances of the same product.
ALLEGRO pleated mesh
With ALLEGRO, you pull the moving frame across the opening and the mesh folds progressively along its track. The screen can be stopped partway, which is useful when you want ventilation through only part of a wide door or need to pass through while leaving the rest screened. Artilux describes the movement as a smoother, more controlled glide and says the system does not use the spring-loaded cassette mechanism found in its retractable screens. The mesh remains guided by the track rather than being wound under spring tension.
Artilux’s official FAQ describes the ALLEGRO track as a “12 mm low-profile track that conceals its tensioning cords for a cleaner, more durable, and premium finish.” That statement is a manufacturer description, but it identifies a concrete design feature: the cords are integrated within a shallow track instead of being exposed as a separate tensioning system.

A retractable screen moves across the opening and winds into a cassette when you release it or move it back. The cassette provides a compact parking position at the jamb or head, depending on the configuration. This can leave the opening visually clear when the screen is not needed, but the cassette and its guides still have to fit within the frame or reveal.
Retractable operation can suit a frequently used door because the mesh disappears into its housing rather than folding into a visible stack. The trade-off is that the cassette, spring mechanism and side guides become part of the design, and the final position depends on the available frame space and the exact opening layout.

The comparison describes the operating principles Artilux publishes; it is not a promise that either system fits every opening. A site measure is needed to verify clearances, fixing surfaces and travel paths.
Which openings may suit each approach?
Corner and extra-large openings
Artilux describes ALLEGRO applications for corner doors and extra-large openings. A pleated system can be useful where two planes meet or where a single conventional screen would require an awkward swing arc. The track layout and meeting points must still be designed around the corner detail, sill, drainage and door hardware. Treat “corner” and “extra-large” as manufacturer-described applications, not a standard maximum size; the supplied product pages do not publish a universal width limit.
French doors and wide doorways
Artilux also presents pleated screens for French-door configurations. Double doors create a central meeting line and often require coordinated moving panels, handles and latching details. A pleated arrangement can leave a controlled pedestrian opening while the remaining span stays covered, but the installer must confirm how the panels stack and where the tracks meet. Windows
For windows, Artilux says its Roll Up retractable screens suit awning, casement, sliding and double-hung styles. Its window-screen page lists aluminium frames and PVC-coated fibreglass mesh. Window operation, insect protection and emergency egress requirements vary by room, so the screen should be checked against the sash or panel’s full movement rather than selected from the window label alone. A purpose-built wall cavity
ALLEGRO can be installed into a purpose-built wall cavity, according to Artilux. Concealing the folded screen can produce a cleaner reveal, but the cavity must be designed before linings, trims and finishes close the wall. Confirm its required depth, width, drainage, access for adjustment and relationship to structural members with the designer and installer. Retrofitting a cavity after construction may involve opening finished surfaces; the product page specifically says cavity installation requires planning during construction.

Visual integration: what to inspect in drawings and samples
Both systems are intended to be discreet, but “discreet” does not mean invisible in every installation. Compare the following elements in the proposed elevation and detail drawings:

- Cassette position: A retractable unit needs a housing. Decide whether it sits at a jamb, head or another edge, and whether it conflicts with curtains, shutters, handles or adjacent glazing.
- Stack or parking space: Pleated mesh folds to one or both sides depending on the layout. Reserve that space so the folded package does not obstruct a handle or corner passage.
- Frame colour: Artilux promotes a broad colour range. Request the current colour schedule and compare a physical sample in the project’s daylight; the published product pages do not establish a fixed colour list.
- Meeting points: On French doors, corner doors or multi-panel openings, check where moving frames meet and how the junction is secured without creating a trip or snag point.
- Recesses and trims: A flush-looking installation depends on the reveal being straight and deep enough for the selected hardware. Measure finished, not merely structural, dimensions.
Ask for a section through the sill and jamb, not only a front elevation. The section shows whether the track or cassette sits proud of the finish, how water is shed, and whether later flooring or cladding changes could reduce clearance.
Published construction details and warranty periods
Artilux lists the following ALLEGRO components and coverage. The periods are manufacturer-published terms shown on the official product page in 2026; obtain the current full warranty document before committing.

Warranty categories matter. A seven-year period for frames and fittings is not the same as seven-year coverage for mesh, cords or installation. Keep the signed scope, product identification, installation date and maintenance instructions, and ask what exclusions apply to accidental damage, alterations, wind events and normal wear.
How to prepare for a custom assessment
A useful consultation gives the installer enough information to determine whether a pleated or retractable layout can work before finishes are ordered. Follow this sequence.

- Record the opening: Measure width and height at several points, note out-of-square conditions, and photograph the sill, jambs, head, handles and nearby walls. Do not rely on a single nominal door or window size.
- Describe the use pattern: State how often the opening is crossed, whether the screen needs to stop partway, which direction people approach from, and whether furniture or landscaping limits the parking side.
- Identify the geometry: Mark French-door meeting lines, corner returns, sliding-panel overlaps, awning hinges, casement handles and double-hung travel. These details can change the track or cassette location.
- Check construction timing: If a wall cavity or concealed recess is desired, raise it during framing and cladding coordination. Confirm structural backing, cavity depth, access and finish tolerances before the wall is closed.
- Choose the visual target: Decide whether a folded pleated stack or a cassette is easier to conceal, then review frame colours, track lines and adjacent window treatments together.
- Request a written specification: Have the proposal identify the screen type, mesh, frame finish, track or cassette arrangement, opening dimensions, installation scope, warranty periods and any assumptions about substrate or finished-floor levels.
- Verify service arrangements: Ask who measures, installs, adjusts and services the screen, which genuine replacement parts are used, and how future access to a concealed component will be provided.
Questions to settle before choosing pleated or retractable
Will the screen be used partially open?
If the answer is yes, ALLEGRO’s ability to stop partway is a relevant advantage described by Artilux. A retractable screen may still be suitable, but confirm whether its operating hardware is designed for the intermediate position you expect rather than assuming it can remain safely anywhere along the travel.
Can the opening spare a parking zone?
Pleated mesh needs room to fold; retractable mesh needs room for a cassette. On a narrow jamb, a cassette may be easier to accommodate. At a corner or very wide span, a pleated track layout may offer more practical movement. The installer should show both options on the plan.
Is the project new construction or a finished renovation?
New construction gives more opportunity to hide a cavity and coordinate the sill. In a renovation, a surface-mounted track or visible cassette may avoid demolition. Ask for a detail that includes existing architraves, render, tile, flooring and waterproofing, because those layers determine the remaining clearance.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Separate the frame-and-fitting period from mesh, cord and installation coverage. Artilux publishes seven years for ALLEGRO frames and fittings but 12 months for mesh and cords; its window page similarly distinguishes a seven-year limited frame-and-fitting period from 12 months for mesh and installation. Confirm whether the final contract uses those current terms.
Installation, operation and maintenance expectations
These are fitted architectural screens, so accurate measurement and a sound substrate are part of performance. Before handover, operate every panel through its full travel, check that the track is clear, verify that locks or catches engage, and inspect the screen from both sides for twists or loose edges. Ask the installer to demonstrate removal or access for cleaning without forcing the pleats or mesh.

Keep the low-profile track free of grit and construction dust. Use the cleaning method specified for the supplied mesh and fittings; abrasive tools or solvents can damage coatings and cords. Do not drag furniture, pets or tools across the mesh. If movement becomes rough, stop operating it and have the alignment, tensioning cords and fixing points inspected rather than applying an unapproved lubricant.
For a cavity installation, record where the access points are before the wall is finished. A concealed system is easier to service when the installer’s adjustment route is documented, even if the visible result is minimal.
Availability and the Amazon question
Artilux presents ALLEGRO and the retractable systems as tailored products supported by measurement, consultation and installation. It does not establish that these systems are standard shelf products or that a compatible consumer listing is available through Amazon.
